My Ex-Mate Kidnapped Our Daughter
My Ex-Mate Kidnapped Our Daughter Summary
Chapter 1 of My Ex-Mate Kidnapped Our Daughter
At 2:14 on a Tuesday afternoon, the sound of a rattling muffler dragged five years of dead memories straight into my driveway.
I didn't need to look up to know who it was. The moment the tires crunched on the gravel, a sour, metallic stench washed over the porch. It was the rancid smell of a wolf in biological decay—the unmistakable rot of an Alpha who had severed a fated mate bond and paid the price.
Four-year-old Maisie sat on the porch bench in front of me, her small warm palm pressed flat against my swollen belly.
"He kicked again, Mama," she whispered, her brown eyes wide. "The baby is saying hi."
"I felt him, sweetheart," I said softly, tying off the ribbon at the end of her braid. My hand stayed steady, but beneath my ribs, my inner wolf sat bolt upright, hackles raised.
Donovan Cole stepped out of the battered SUV.
He hadn't changed his arrogance, but time had gutted everything else. His once-golden hair was dull and greasy. His shoulders were thrown back in a rigid Beta posture, trying to project dominance, but his aura sputtered like a dying lightbulb. In his right hand, a silver chain dangled between his fingers.
He walked up the three porch steps, his eyes scanning my face, then dropping down to my seven-month bump. A flicker of contempt crossed his face, quickly masked by practiced pity.
"Amara," he said, using that smooth, rehearsed voice he used to give the Ironveil council. "You're living out here all alone. No pack. No rank. Just like I thought."
I didn't stand up. I didn't flinch. "What do you want, Donovan?"
"I came to give you a second chance," he said, stepping closer. He held out the chain. "Sutton is dead. My pack has fallen on hard times, and my boy needs a mother. I know you've been waiting for me. An unmated rogue can't survive out here forever."
I looked at the silver pendant resting in his palm.
My Luna senses flared with absolute clarity. The metal was scratched and tarnished. On the back, faint but legible, were the engraved letters *D & S*. And clinging to the chain was the stale, powdery ghost-scent of Sutton, his dead chosen Luna.
He had brought me his dead mate’s recycled jewelry and framed it as charity.
My Luna aura, held in check for five years under Lawrence's royal decree, cracked through my skin like a wave of pure heat. The sheer weight of it hit Donovan square in the chest. His knees buckled half an inch before he caught himself, his eyes bulging in shock.
I stood up slowly, smoothing the front of my dress.
"A second chance?" My voice was quiet, so flat it sounded like ice snapping. "You stood before the entire pack and severed our bond with your own tongue. You traded me for an Alpha's daughter, and now your wolf is rotting inside your chest."
I reached out, took the pendant from his hand, and let my fingers brush his. His skin was cold and clammy.
"I don't wear dead women's scraps," I whispered.
I opened my hand. The silver chain dropped, landing with a soft clink in the dirt right between his worn boots.
"Get off my porch."
Donovan stood frozen, his mouth open. In five years, he had clearly never imagined this script.
Before he could speak, Maisie poked her head out from behind my knees. She wrinkled her small button nose, looked Donovan up and down, and said in a clear, ringing voice, "Mama, the scary bad man smells wrong. Like spoiled meat."
Donovan flinched. The wind shifted then, blowing from behind us toward the driveway.
A wave of Maisie's scent rolled over him. It was warm, metallic, and impossibly heavy—the undeniable, sovereign scent of pure Lycan royal blood.
Donovan stopped breathing. His pupils dilated until his eyes were almost black. His damaged wolf lunged toward that scent inside him like a starving animal catching the scent of fresh meat.
I saw the math click behind his eyes. He calculated Maisie's age. Four years old. He counted the months since he had cast me out.
"She has Alpha blood," Donovan breathed, his voice turning raw and manic. A sick, greedy light lit up his face. "My bloodline... she's four. She's mine."
"She is nothing to you," I snarled, stepping fully in front of Maisie and blocking his view. My claws pricked through the skin of my fingers, sharp and ready. "Turn around and walk to your car, or you won't leave this property on two legs."
Donovan took a slow step backward down the stairs, but his eyes never stopped searching the space behind my skirt.
"We'll finish this, Amara," he muttered, slipping into the SUV. "You can't keep my daughter from me."

That night, after tucking Maisie into bed with her stuffed bear, I sat on the edge of the mattress and reached deep into the mate bond.
The link stretched across hundreds of miles, connecting straight to the Lycan capital.
*Lawrence.*
A second later, his presence flooded my mind—warm, dark, smelling of rich cedar and polished iron. *Amara? What's wrong?*
"Donovan found us," I said, my voice trembling for the first time all day. "He came to the house. He caught Maisie's scent, Lawrence. He thinks she carries his bloodline. He thinks she's his."
Across the bond, Lawrence Hale went entirely, terrifyingly still. It was the complete cessation of movement that every wolf feared—the deadly pause before the Lycan King struck.
*He touched neither of you?* Lawrence's voice dropped into a lethal growl.
"No. But he's desperate. His wolf is dying."
*Three unmarked units are deploying to Cedarfall tonight,* Lawrence ordered, his Alpha tone ringing clear through the bond. *They will lock down the street, Maisie's school, and your perimeter. I am wrapping the border treaty negotiations and leaving within the week. Touch nothing of his. Let him make one wrong move.*
I pressed my palm against my belly, feeling our son roll inside me. On the nightstand, the small glass jar of Lawrence's cedar-and-iron balm sat open, anchoring me in the quiet dark.

Forty-eight hours later, the quiet town of Cedarfall felt like a cage waiting to spring shut.
Three black, unmarked sedans sat at different points along our street—one parked near Maisie's preschool, one by the park entrance, and one fifty yards down from my mailbox.
I stood at the edge of my driveway, handing a slip of paper to the Lycan lead warrior. On it, I had written Donovan's license plate number and the exact sulfur-and-decay scent signature of his dying wolf.
"He's circling," the warrior said quietly, his radio earpiece humming. "He's watching the house from the tree line."
"Don't let him get close to the preschool," I said.
"He won't touch the little princess, Luna. The King's orders are absolute."
I nodded, walked back onto the porch, and stepped inside. Through the lace curtains of the front window, I looked out toward the corner of the block.
Under the shade of an overgrown oak tree, a rusted grey SUV sat idling, its exhaust puffing thin white clouds into the cold afternoon air.
