Chapter 3
The sight of Maisie’s bloodstained mouth shattered the last thread of restraint I had held for five years.
A primal, suffocating heat tore through my veins. My inner wolf roared, breaking free of the shadows. The bones in my hands lengthened with a sickening crunch. My nails split and sharpened into razor-sharp, obsidian claws. My vision narrowed into a blinding tunnel of amber and gold as pure Luna fire flooded my eyes.
Donovan was still cursing, his right hand dripping crimson into the trampled leaves. He raised his left arm, his cracked, pathetic aura flaring in a desperate attempt to command me. "Amara, heel—"
I didn't let him finish.
I struck.
I crossed the grass faster than thought. My claws slashed across his chest, ripping through his shirt and opening three shallow, bloody gouges across his sternum. The raw impact of my Luna power exploded outward like a physical shockwave.
Donovan’s eyes bulged in absolute terror. His damaged wolf didn't just cower—it whimpered out loud, a high, strangled sound caught in his throat. His knees hit the dirt with a brutal thud, his hands flying up to shield his face. He looked at me not like an ex-mate reclaiming lost property, but like a stray dog staring down a predator ten times its size.
"Touch her again," I whispered, my voice vibrating with dual frequencies, woman and wolf intertwined, "and I will tear your throat out where you kneel."
I didn't wait for him to stand. I spun on my heel, scooped Maisie up against my chest, and ran.
Even with seven months of belly weighing me down, my legs moved on pure adrenaline. I sprinted out of the park, burst onto the pavement, and didn't stop until I had slammed through my front door. I threw the deadbolts, locked the chain, and collapsed onto the living room sofa, pulling Maisie onto my lap.
My hands trembled violently as the claws receded, leaving my skin raw and aching. Maisie was shivering, her small arms wrapped tightly around my neck, her tears finally soaking into the cotton of my sweater.
I closed my eyes, leaned my head back, and let go of the dam inside my mind.
I seized the mate bond. I gathered every drop of terror, every ounce of maternal fury, and sent it roaring across the continent like a white-hot flare.
*Lawrence.*
The pulse slammed into him. Across two territories, amidst the quiet decorum of the Lycan Council summit, the connection didn't just vibrate—it scorched.
I felt the exact instant it hit him. His soul locked onto mine. I felt the sickening drop of his gut as he registered Maisie’s sharp, lingering panic, followed instantly by the icy, suffocating dread of my rage. In that single beat of silence, Lawrence Hale’s Lycan nature detonated.
*Who?*
His mental voice wasn't words—it was a lethal, vibrating bass that shook the core of my skull.
*Donovan grabbed her,* I projected through the link, my chest heaving. *At the park. She bit him. I fought him off. He wants her blood, Lawrence. He thinks she's his.*
A deafening silence fell over the bond. It was the terrifying stillness of a monster turning its gaze toward prey. Through our link, I heard Lawrence’s real-world command rip through a council chamber hundreds of miles away:
*"Ethan. Take the advance team to Cedarfall. Now. Prep the jet. We leave in ten minutes."*
Then, his voice returned to my mind, tight, low, and laced with absolute venom. *Stay in the house. I am coming.*
***
Three hours later, the quiet gravel of my driveway crunched under the weight of four armored black SUVs.
Doors didn't slam; they opened with quiet, military precision. A second later, the front door rattled as the deadbolt turned.
Lawrence stepped across the threshold.
He wore his tailored black suit, his coat slightly rumpled from travel, but the aura radiating from his broad shoulders was so heavy it made the air in the foyer feel thick. His dark hair was brushed back, his jaw set in stone,
his grey eyes scanning the living room until they locked onto us.
Maisie was still curled against me, her tiny fingers clamped tight around the smooth grey stone Lawrence had given her from the capital courtyard.
"Daddy!" she cried, her voice cracking.
In two long strides, Lawrence crossed the rug. He dropped to one knee before the sofa and gathered her into his massive arms. He lifted her off my lap with effortless ease, tucking her small body against his chest.
Maisie didn't hesitate. She buried her face into the hollow of his neck, inhaling deeply.
The moment the scent of warm cedar and polished iron filled her senses, Maisie’s trembling stopped. Her tiny, undeveloped wolf let out a soft, contented sigh and went still. She was safe. Her father was here.
Lawrence held her for a long time, his large hand cupping the back of her head, his eyes closed as he drank in her presence. But when he finally opened his eyes and looked up at me, the mask cracked.
Through the bond, I felt the sharp, jagged edge of his guilt. He had hidden me away in Cedarfall under a sealed decree to keep me safe from royal rivals. But that very secrecy, that enforced quiet, had painted a target on our backs. It had made me look weak. It had let a dying cur like Donovan think I was helpless.
Lawrence set Maisie down on the cushions, kissing her forehead. "Rest, little bird. Daddy is right here."
He turned to me, sliding his hand behind my neck, and pulled my forehead gently against his.
His skin was warm, his cedar scent wrapping around me like armor. He leaned in, his lips brushing against my temple.
*This ends today,* his voice whispered through the bond, dark and velvet-soft. *No more hiding. No more quiet.*
A sharp rap sounded at the open front door. Marcus, flanked by Lawrence’s Royal Beta, stepped into the hallway.
"Sire," Marcus said, bowing his head slightly. "Donovan Cole just walked into the local pack clinic downtown. He’s with the resident healer. He’s bleeding from a wolf-bite to the hand and demanding an immediate, binding blood-scent verification on the Sinclair child. He claims paternity under Ironveil pack statute."
A grim look crossed the Beta’s face. "He told the clinic staff that if the mother refuses to present the child within the hour, he will file a formal grievance with the regional Alpha council for child concealment."
Lawrence didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply drew back from my forehead, his fingers trailing down my jaw with lingering tenderness.
"He wants a public verification," Lawrence murmured, a cold, humorless smile touching the corner of his lips.
He reached into his breast pocket and produced a heavy, black leather document case embossed with the silver sigil of the Lycan King—the certified royal bloodline decree he had kept ready since the day I first told him Donovan had arrived.
"Then let us not keep him waiting."
