Chapter 1 of Dear Wife, I don't want a divorce

I glanced at the gold watch glinting under the mall’s bright lights, a satisfied smile spreading across my face. It was perfect, sleek, elegant, and exactly what Daniel would love. For three years now, I’d been doing my best to show him how much I cared. This watch was no exception.

Today was our anniversary, after all, and I refused to believe Daniel had forgotten. He’d been distant, sure, but everyone had bad weeks, right? Maybe work had been stressful. Maybe he was just tired. He’d barely said a word this morning before rushing out the door, and the thought of it stung.

Still, I wanted to make tonight special.

I readjusted the wedding ring on my finger as I waited for the salesperson to wrap the watch. The ring was a size too big, and I usually wore a smaller one I’d bought for myself. But today, I’d chosen to wear the original. The one Daniel had given me. The one that didn’t have my initials engraved, just his.

It wasn’t the first time I’d noticed the oddity, but I brushed the thought away. Daniel wasn’t the type to pay attention to details like that. At least, that’s what I told myself.

The salesperson handed me the neatly wrapped gift, and I hurried home, excitement bubbling inside me. Tonight, I’d surprise him with this gift, and everything would go back to normal.

But as soon as I opened the door, my excitement faded.

The house felt… wrong.

Daniel’s shoes were carelessly kicked off near the door, not neatly placed like usual. The living room was eerily quiet, and as I stepped inside, I noticed a pair of pants on the floor, leading toward the bedroom.

My heart began to race.

“Daniel?” I called, forcing my voice to stay steady. No response.

I walked toward the bedroom, dread creeping into my chest with every step. The door was slightly ajar, and as I pushed it open, the sight hit me like a punch to the gut.

Daniel was sitting on the edge of the bed, buttoning his shirt. A woman I didn’t recognize stood near the window, fixing her hair.

The silence was deafening.

Daniel glanced at me, his face unreadable. “You’re home early,” he said flatly, as if nothing were out of the ordinary.

I couldn’t breathe. My hands tightened around the gift box, and for a moment, I thought I might drop it. “What… What is this?”

The woman avoided my gaze, grabbing her bag and slipping past me without a word. Daniel didn’t stop her.

“I think it’s obvious,” he said, his tone cold. “We need to talk.”

My mind spun, trying to make sense of what was happening. This was a nightmare. It had to be.

“Talk?” I echoed, my voice trembling. “What is there to talk about, Daniel? Who was she?”

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Her name doesn’t matter. What matters is us.”

“Us?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “You’re cheating on me, and you want to talk about us?”

Daniel’s gaze hardened, and for the first time, I saw something in his eyes I didn’t recognize. Indifference.

“Emma,” he said, his voice devoid of emotion, “this isn’t working anymore. We’ve grown apart. I want a divorce.”

The words hit me like a slap. Divorce? Three years of marriage, and this was how it ended?

I shook my head, refusing to believe it. “You’re not serious. This is our anniversary, Daniel. How can you say that to me today, of all days?”

He stood, towering over me with a calmness that only fueled my anger. “That’s exactly why I’m saying it today. We need to stop pretending. I don’t love you anymore.”

My heart shattered, the weight of his words pulling me down. “You don’t mean that,” I whispered, tears threatening to spill.

“I do,” he said, his voice cold and final. “It’s over.”

I looked at the watch in my hands, the gift I’d spent hours picking out for him, and the realization sank in. None of it mattered to him. I didn’t matter to him.

Without a word, I turned and walked out of the room, my legs trembling as I made my way to the living room. The walls seemed to close in around me, suffocating me with memories of a life that was crumbling before my eyes.

Daniel followed, his footsteps heavy behind me. “Emma, don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

I spun around, my tears now falling freely. “Harder? You’ve been distant for weeks, Daniel. You didn’t even wish me a happy anniversary this morning! And now, you’re throwing everything away like it’s nothing?”

He didn’t flinch. “It’s better this way. For both of us.”

I laughed bitterly, the sound foreign even to me. “Better for you, maybe. But not for me.”

For a moment, he looked almost guilty. Almost. But then his expression hardened again, and I realized the man I’d loved was gone.

“I’ll have the papers drawn up,” he said, his tone final.

I stared at him, my chest tightening. This wasn’t how it was supposed to end. But as much as it hurt, I knew I couldn’t stay. Not with him.

“Fine,” I said, my voice breaking. “You want a divorce? You’ll get it. But don’t think for a second that I’ll forgive you for this.”

I grabbed my bag and headed for the door, my hands trembling. As I stepped outside, the cool evening air hit me, and I realized I had no idea where to go.

But one thing was certain—I couldn’t stay here.

For the first time in years, I was on my own. And despite the pain threatening to consume me, I knew I had to keep moving.

As I walked away from the house that had once been my home, I made a silent promise to myself: I would survive this. With or without Daniel, I would find a way to start over.

And this time, I wouldn’t let anyone break me again. At least that's what I thought.
