Chapter 2

When I arrived at my family’s house, my mother was pacing the living room, her face pale and drawn. The sight sent a jolt of panic through me.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, setting my bag down and moving toward her.

Her hands trembled as she clutched mine. “Your father… He had a heart attack this morning.”

My knees nearly buckled. “What? How? Is he okay?”

She nodded weakly. “He’s stable for now, but the doctors say he needs surgery. The problem is…” She hesitated, her voice breaking. “The cost is more than we can afford. It’s in the millions, Emma. The kind of money only someone like Daniel could help with.”

The mention of Daniel made my stomach twist. After what I’d seen and heard, I had no intention of asking him for anything. But this was my father’s life.

“I’m so glad you came,” my mother said, her voice trembling with relief. “It’s as if fate brought you here. You have to tell Daniel about this. He’s family now, Emma. He’ll understand. I know he will.”

Her faith in him stung more than anything. I wanted to scream that she didn’t know the man Daniel had become, that he was nothing like the husband she thought he was. But I bit my tongue. This wasn’t about me—it was about saving my father.

As I sat on the couch, trying to figure out my next move, my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screen, and my heart sank. It was a post from Clara, Daniel’s supposed childhood best friend—the one who had been in our bedroom.

The caption read: [Out with the love of my life. He just got me a new car.]

My grip tightened on the phone, rage bubbling under my skin. How could he do this? How could he flaunt his betrayal so openly?

Before I could process it, my phone buzzed again. This time, it was a call from Daniel. I hesitated for a moment, then answered.

“Emma,” his voice was unusually soft, almost pleading. “I’m sorry about what I said. I didn’t mean it. I was upset. Can we talk? Please come back home.”

I closed my eyes, torn between fury and desperation. “You didn’t mean it? Daniel, you told me you wanted a divorce! You’ve been distant, cold, and now I see Clara posting about you buying her a car. What do you expect me to believe?”

There was a pause on the other end. Then he sighed. “That was nothing. Clara’s just… She’s been around for years, you know that. It was a stupid moment—something that happened in the blink of an eye. I promise it won’t happen again. Just come back, Emma. We’ll fix this.”

His words felt hollow, but then I thought of my father. He needed surgery, and I couldn’t afford to let my pride get in the way.

“I’ll come back,” I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper. “But, Daniel, if this happens again, I’m done. For real.”

When I returned to the house that night, Daniel greeted me with a forced smile. “Why did you take my words so seriously?” he said, almost playfully. “I was angry, that’s all. You know I didn’t mean it.”

I wanted to scream at him, to make him understand how deeply he’d hurt me. But instead, I nodded, swallowing my pride. I couldn’t risk losing the financial support my family desperately needed.

As I walked past him into the house, I promised myself one thing: if he betrayed me again, there would be no going back.

The next morning, Daniel surprised me by suggesting we go out to celebrate our anniversary. His sudden change in attitude caught me off guard, but I chose to ignore my lingering doubts. Maybe this was his way of making up for everything.

As I finished getting ready, smoothing down the soft folds of my dress, Daniel was on his phone, typing quickly. Suddenly, his expression shifted. His jaw tightened, and a frown crept across his face.

I watched him, my chest tightening. “Is everything okay?” I asked cautiously.

He slid the phone into his pocket, forcing a smile. “Yeah, everything’s fine. But we need to stop somewhere first—pick someone up—before heading to the boutique.”

I blinked, confused. “Boutique? I thought we were going to a restaurant for our date.”

Daniel’s lips pressed together in irritation. “What’s with the attitude? You’re mad again just because of a change in plans?”

The words stung, but I didn’t want to ruin the fragile peace between us. I forced a tight smile and said, “No, it’s fine. Let’s go.”

The car ride was silent except for the low hum of the engine. I stared out the window, trying to ignore the gnawing feeling in my stomach. Something felt off.

Daniel pulled up in front of a sleek building, and my unease deepened as the door opened, and out stepped Clara. She was dressed in a blue mini dress that hugged her figure, her hair perfectly styled, and her heels clicking confidently against the pavement. She looked stunning.

My gaze shifted to Daniel, silently demanding an explanation, but he was already out of the car. I watched as he walked over to Clara and opened the door for her with a smile—a gesture he hadn’t made for me in years.

When he got back into the driver’s seat, Clara’s presence filled the car with an energy I didn’t like.

“Oh, hi, Emma,” Clara said cheerfully, her voice dripping with false sweetness. “Didn’t know you were joining us today.”

I tried to stay composed, but I could feel my face betraying me as my frown deepened.

“What?” Daniel said, glancing at me as he started the car. “Don’t tell me you’re getting angry for nothing again.”

My jaw clenched. Anger? For nothing?

Clara giggled softly and added, “Oh, did you two have plans? I didn’t know. I was bored at home, so I begged Daniel to take me shopping just to kill my boredom.”

Her words hit me like a slap. A wave of emotions surged through me—anger, disbelief, and humiliation. My chest felt tight, and it was like I couldn’t breathe properly.

I clenched my hands tightly in my lap, forcing myself to stay calm. I didn’t want to give either of them the satisfaction of seeing me break. But inside, I was screaming. Why was Clara even here? Why had Daniel agreed to this?

The car moved, but my thoughts were spinning. This was supposed to be our day. Our anniversary. And yet, here I was, being treated like an afterthought while Clara basked in Daniel’s attention.

I stole a glance at him, hoping for some kind of acknowledgment, but he acted like nothing was wrong. As if this were perfectly normal.

My heart ached, but I refused to let my tears fall. Not in front of them. I plastered on the smallest smile I could manage and stared out the window, praying for the car ride to end.

Chapter 3

The drive to the boutique was tense, with Clara sitting comfortably in the back seat, her laughter filling the car as Daniel responded to her jokes with a smile that hadn’t graced his face in months. I stayed silent, my gaze fixed out the window.

When we arrived, the boutique manager greeted us warmly, her professional demeanor slipping the moment she spotted Clara with her hand resting lightly on Daniel’s shoulder.

“Good evening, sir, ma’am,” the manager said, her voice cheerfully forced. “What section would you like to start with? We’ve got some beautiful pieces for wife”

Daniel didn’t correct her, and Clara didn’t bother hiding her smirk. My chest tightened, but I forced a polite smile as if the words hadn’t pierced me.

“Oh, I’m not his wife,” Clara said casually, leaning into Daniel. “I’m just here to help him find something nice. He has such great taste, don’t you think?” She giggled, squeezing his shoulder lightly before moving past him to the nearest rack of clothes.

I stood there, rooted to the spot, as they moved together, laughing and chatting, clearly in their own world.

The boutique was bright and airy, mirrors lining the walls with soft classical music playing in the background. Clara’s energy filled the space as she pulled dress after dress from the racks, holding each up for Daniel’s approval. I stood there, fighting the growing knot in my stomach.

“What about this one?” Clara asked, holding up a soft pink dress with intricate lace detailing.

Daniel nodded. “That’s nice. You’d look great in that,” he said, barely glancing at me.

I could feel the weight of the air around me. He didn’t even look at me. My presence was nothing.

Clara disappeared into the fitting room first, and I didn’t have to wait long before she emerged, twirling in a sleek off-the-shoulder gown that clung to her figure. Daniel’s breath hitched, his gaze following her every move. He didn’t hide his admiration, and for a moment, I felt like I had been forgotten.

“This one’s stunning,” Clara said, smiling at him as she spun. “What do you think?”

Daniel’s voice softened, almost reverent. “You look… beautiful.”

Beautiful. The word lingered, and I felt my stomach twist. He had said that to her.

Clara beamed, clearly pleased by his reaction. “You’re too sweet,” she teased, her tone playful. “But don’t forget why we’re here.” She shot me a glance, a sly smirk forming on her lips. “Emma, why aren’t you trying anything on?”

That was the question, wasn’t it? Why wasn’t I trying anything on?

Daniel blinked, finally snapping out of whatever trance Clara had put him in. “Yeah, Emma,” he said, his tone now flat. “Why don’t you pick something? This is supposed to be about you too, right?”

I forced a tight smile. “I’ll look around,” I replied, walking toward the nearest rack with little care. I grabbed the first dress I saw, a simple one, not too flashy, and headed to the fitting room.

Inside, I stood in front of the mirror for a moment, staring at my reflection. I didn’t care about the dress. It wasn’t about the dress. It was about the fact that Daniel hadn’t even noticed me.

I changed quickly and stepped out, my gaze lingering on Daniel and Clara. They were so wrapped up in each other that they didn’t even notice me at first.

“Daniel,” Clara said, spinning in another gown, this time an elegant A-line dress with subtle sparkles. “What do you think of this one?”

Daniel’s eyes lit up, his admiration clear. “That’s… incredible. You look amazing, Clara.”

My stomach churned. He didn’t even look at me. His attention was entirely on her. And when he finally glanced at me, his expression was empty.

Clara caught my expression in the mirror, her lips curling into a smug grin. “What do you think, Emma?” she asked, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. “You picked something so plain, though. But I guess that’s to be expected, right?”

Daniel chuckled softly, clearly agreeing. “I’m not surprised. You’re a little old-school, Emma. This dress just doesn’t suit you.”

The words hit me like a slap. Old-school. Plain. His words echoed, sharper than I expected.

Clara, sensing my discomfort, pretended to defend me. “Oh, come on. Don’t be too harsh, Daniel. She’s not a model like me, but she’s still your wife, right?” She gave me a mocking smile. “Maybe it’s just not her style.”

I bit my tongue, refusing to say a word. There was no point. This was a game to them. I was just the background noise.

But then Clara wasn’t done. “You can’t compare Emma’s stature to mine. You know I’m a model, right? It’s just natural that some people don’t have the same… appeal.”

Her words cut deeper than I expected, but I swallowed the hurt. I’d had enough.

I wasn’t going to stay here and watch them continue to mock me.

Determined to take control, I picked out something else. This time, it was a bold, sexy black satin dress with a plunging neckline—a style I’d never dare wear before. But if Clara was going to flaunt herself, maybe it was time I did too.

When I stepped out of the fitting room, Daniel’s gaze snapped to me. His eyes widened, and for the first time today, his attention was on me.

I could see the shock in his eyes as he looked me up and down. I was the one he was looking at now.

“Wow,” Daniel breathed, completely caught off guard. “You look... amazing.”

His voice was hoarse, his eyes locking onto me like I was a stranger. For the first time in a long time, Daniel seemed to be seeing me.

Clara’s face twisted in irritation, and she shot him a glare. “My legs are aching, and I want to go home,” she said, clearly annoyed by the shift in attention.

But Daniel didn’t even glance at her. His eyes were still locked on me.

I’d never seen him like this before. I could feel the power shift, and for the first time, I had control of the situation.
