Chapter 1 of After My Fiancé Humiliated Me, I Ruined Him

I stood in the boarding queue at Terminal 4, my overnight bag hanging from my shoulder. The dress was inside—the blue one Dutton liked. I'd folded it carefully between layers of tissue paper. Around me, people shuffled forward with their phones out and their coffee cups balanced on top of their carry-ons. I checked my boarding pass for the third time. Gate 27. Paris. Eight months since I'd last seen him in person, and tonight I was going to surprise him.

I let myself feel it. The anticipation. The warmth in my chest. The stupid, giddy hope that maybe this time the distance wouldn't feel so heavy.

Then the gate agent's voice crackled over the speaker. "Ladies and gentlemen, we're experiencing a mechanical issue with tonight's flight to Paris. The aircraft is grounded until further notice. We'll provide updates as soon as we have them."

The queue dissolved. People groaned. A man in front of me swore under his breath. I stepped out of line and found an empty seat near the window. The terminal stretched out in both directions—bright lights, rolling suitcases, the hum of a thousand strangers going somewhere I wasn't.

I pulled out my phone to text Dutton. To tell him the flight was delayed. To apologize for the surprise that wouldn't happen tonight after all.

The Wi-Fi connected.

And my screen exploded.

Message after message after message, all from Dutton, all sent hours ago. The notifications stacked on top of each other so fast I couldn't read them. My thumb hovered over the screen. My heartbeat kicked up in my throat.

I opened the first one.

*Thank God you're in the air. I couldn't do this if I thought you'd answer.*

I blinked. Read it again.

The next message loaded.

*I'm seeing someone else. Have been for a while. Her name's Marina. We're engaged.*

The words didn't make sense. I stared at them. The terminal noise around me went distant and muffled, like I'd been shoved underwater.

I scrolled.

*You were always so sweet, Gabi. So trusting. I guess that's what happens when you come from nowhere. You don't know what you don't know.*

My hands went cold.

*Marina's different. She's got class. Old money. The kind of woman who fits in rooms you'd never even get invited to. I'm done pretending I'm okay with less.*

I kept scrolling. I couldn't stop.

*And let's be honest—what were we going to do long-term? You can't even have kids. That miscarriage? Best thing that ever happened to me. Dodged a bullet there. A woman who can't carry a child has nothing to offer.*

The phone screen blurred. I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand. My breath came shallow and fast. I made myself keep reading.

*You're damaged goods, Gabi. I'm glad I figured it out before I wasted any more time. Marina's whole. She's perfect. And she doesn't come with all your baggage.*

There were more. He kept going. Kept talking. Kept justifying. He joked about the matching jewelry he'd bought me—said he'd sent the same set to Marina and another girl in London. He called me naive. He called me boring. He said he was relieved I'd never know, that I'd just fade out of his life quietly while he moved on to something better.

I sat there in the terminal with my phone in my lap and my overnight bag at my feet. People walked past me. A child cried somewhere behind me. The gate agent made another announcement I didn't hear.

I read every message.

Every single one.

When I finished, I stood up. My legs felt strange, like they didn't belong to me. I walked to the airline counter. The agent looked up with a practiced smile.

"I need to cancel my ticket," I said.

My voice sounded calm. Steady. Like someone else was speaking.

"Are you sure?" she asked. "We'll have another aircraft in a few hours. You could still make it tonight."

"I'm sure."

She processed the cancellation. I thanked her. I turned away from the gate and walked back through the terminal. Near the security exit, I stopped at a wastebasket. I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the earrings Dutton had sent me last month—tiny silver hoops with a handwritten note that said *Thinking of you always*.

I dropped them into the trash.

Outside, the night air hit my face. Cold. Sharp. Real. I stood on the curb and raised my hand. A black car pulled up within seconds. The driver got out and opened the door.

"Where to, ma'am?"

I slid into the back seat. The leather was cool against my legs. I looked out the window at the airport lights, at the planes lined up on the runway, at all the people going somewhere.

"Monarch Global headquarters," I said. "Manhattan."

The driver nodded and pulled into traffic. I leaned back and closed my eyes.

The woman Dutton thought he'd discarded was gone.

The woman he'd never known was going home.
