Chapter 1 of Married to the Man Who Killed Me

My husband walks into the morgue to identify my body.

His pen doesn't shake when he signs the release form.

He doesn't look at the burned face twice.

He's wrong about one thing.

I'm the chief pathologist standing on the other side of the steel table.

And the woman he just claimed as his wife is a stranger I have never seen alive.

Seven years ago he signed another form.

The one where he chose a funding deal over my emergency C-section, and I lost our daughter on a table just like this one.

Forty-seven minutes he made me wait.

Nine minutes she lived.

Now he wants me cremated by Friday, before the widow's trust unlocks forty million dollars he thinks belongs to a faceless offshore fund.

He doesn't know I built that trust.

He doesn't know I control every cent.

There is one signature left before he touches the money.

The medical examiner's.

I cap my pen and slide the file back across the steel.

Mine.

My fingers gripped the edge of the stainless steel table. The cold metal bit into my skin, anchoring me to the freezing room.

Across the pulled-out morgue drawer, Marcus signed the body release form. His fountain pen didn't shake. He didn't even pause.

"Unidentified burned female corpse," I said, keeping my voice entirely stripped of inflection. "Dental records do not match."

Marcus waved his hand, dismissing the charred remains lying between us with a single, irritated flick of his wrist. He barely glanced at the blackened face.

"Viv never liked getting dental X-rays," he said. "Don't waste my time. Have her cremated by Friday."

Nine years of marriage. He was authorizing the incineration of his wife, and he sounded like he was ordering a coffee.

"Friday is a tight turnaround," I told him, tapping my clipboard with a plastic stylus. "Protocol requires a secondary identification when dentals fail."

Marcus let out a sharp sigh. He adjusted the cuffs of his tailored suit, looking anywhere but at the corpse. "Look, doctor. I know my own wife. It is her wedding band on that finger. It is her car that crashed into the ravine. Just stamp the paperwork."

"A ring can be worn by anyone," I replied. "A car can be driven by anyone."

"Are you intentionally being difficult?" he demanded.

"I am following state law, Mr. Hale."

He stepped closer to the table, his expensive cologne cutting through the antiseptic smell of the morgue. "I don't care about state law. I care about getting this over with."

I watched the silver fountain pen in his hand. The exact same custom Montblanc he carried everywhere.

Seven years ago, I lay hemorrhaging on a delivery bed. The alarms screamed.

"Sign the C-section consent," the nurse urged him.

Instead, Marcus pulled that identical pen away from my file. He turned to his assistant to sign a Series B funding contract.

"Just give me a minute," he told the doctor.

That minute stretched into forty-seven. By the time they cut into me, it was too late. My daughter, Lily, lived for exactly nine minutes. The trauma ensured I would never carry another child.

I blinked, pulling myself out of that sterile hospital hallway and back into the present.

"Look at her," I said, gesturing to the remains. "Take a closer look, Mr. Hale. Are you absolutely certain this is Vivian Hale?"

Marcus recoiled, his nose wrinkling in disgust. "I am not staring at a burned corpse any longer than I have to. It is morbid. It is disrespectful."

"It is standard procedure."

"It is unnecessary," he shot back. "The police found her ID in the glove compartment. The license plates matched. What more do you want?"

"Physical verification."

"I gave it to you!"

"You gave me a passing glance," I corrected him.

He slammed his hand down on the metal table. The sound cracked like a gunshot in the quiet morgue. "Listen to me, you bureaucratic nightmare. My wife died in a horrific accident. I am trying to put her to rest. Stop playing games with my grief."

Grief.

I wanted to laugh, but my throat felt too tight.

"Your grief," I repeated, letting the words hang in the freezing air.

"Yes. My grief," he snarled. "Now do your job."

"Sign here, and here," I instructed, pointing to the yellow tags attached to the release file.

Marcus scrawled his name twice. "Is this the last of it?"

"For the release, yes. But the identification remains legally incomplete."

"I just told you it is her," he said, his tone dropping into a dangerous register.

"Verbal confirmation from a distraught spouse is insufficient," I said smoothly.

He let out a harsh laugh. "Do I look distraught to you?"

"You look like a man in a hurry."

His eyes narrowed. "Watch your tone. I can have your medical license revoked by the end of the hour. My company funds half this hospital."

"You are welcome to try," I said.

He wanted the ashes, the death certificate, and the grieving widower status by the weekend. He was practically vibrating with impatience.

What he didn't know was that three weeks after we buried Lily in a tiny white casket, I quietly restructured my mother's estate. I established a forty-million-dollar trust. I made sure every single document was sealed tight by the best lawyers in the city. The beneficiary clause was ironclad, written in plain black ink.

Spouse shall not benefit financially from spouse's death.

Marcus thought he was about to inherit an empire. He had absolutely no idea the woman who controlled every cent of that money was currently standing two feet away from him, wearing a baggy blue scrub suit, a coroner mask, and holding the autopsy pen.

"The state is very particular about these things," I said, flipping to the second page of the file.

"I will double your department's annual donation," he snapped, leaning over the metal table. "Just process the damn form. I have a funeral to plan. I need closure."

Closure.

The word tasted like ash in my mouth.

I lowered my gaze to the paperwork. I checked the box marked Pending.

"Are you listening to me?" Marcus demanded. His voice echoed off the tiled walls, sharp and demanding. "I am the next of kin. I am giving you a direct order to release my wife's remains."

"Next of kin status does not override forensic procedure," I replied.

"I don't have time for this," he muttered, checking his Rolex.

"Forty-seven minutes," I murmured softly.

"What did you say?" Marcus snapped.

"I said, it will take at least forty-seven minutes to process the secondary paperwork."

He scoffed. "Make it twenty. I have a board meeting at noon."

A board meeting. His wife was supposedly dead on a slab, and he was worried about a board meeting.

I stared at his perfectly groomed hair. Not a single strand out of place. He didn't recognize my eyes above the surgical mask. He didn't recognize the cadence of my voice, disguised by the sterile environment and a slight drop in pitch. To him, I was just another faceless obstacle in a white coat, delaying his payday.

I looked at the blackened corpse again. If Marcus had bothered to look closely, if he had cared even a fraction of an ounce, he would have noticed the glaring discrepancies. The height was off by two inches. The bone structure in the shoulders was entirely wrong.

And then there was the scar.

Nine years of marriage, and he couldn't even be bothered to verify a basic physical trait.

I pushed the file back across the steel surface. I picked up my pen and snapped the cap on. The sharp click echoed in the cold room.

Marcus glared at me, his jaw tight. "You are making a massive mistake. Do you know who I am?"

"I know exactly who you are, Mr. Hale," I said.

I squared my shoulders, looking directly into his cold, impatient eyes. My voice flattened out, sounding exactly like a technician reading a sterile lab report.

"Mr. Hale, before issuing the cremation permit—I need you to confirm first, does your wife have a three-centimeter surgical scar on her left lower jaw?"
