Chapter 1 of Wrong Bathroom, Right Billionaire

"Rachel, I'm in the lobby. Please tell me you sent the final deck."

My business partner's voice came through tired and thin. A baby wailed somewhere behind her.

"Sent it at two a.m. Evie, I'm sorry. Ben moved out last night, and Lily won't stop screaming, and I just—"

"Hey. Breathe. I've got this."

"You always say that."

"Because I always do."

I hung up before she could hear my voice crack.

Rachel and I had started Brooks & Moreno Studio four years ago, back when she was the bold one and I was the girl with spreadsheets. Then came the baby. Then came the divorce lawyer. Now it was me, six employees with rent to pay, and one shot at the Hartwell Media fall campaign.

I'd picked a cream suit for today. Cream said confident. Cream said *I don't spill coffee*.

Cream did not say *I've been sick with nerves since six a.m.*

The elevator spat me out on the fortieth floor with twelve minutes to spare. I clutched my laptop to my chest and spotted a door at the end of the hall. No sign I could read from there, but it had to be the restroom.

I pushed it open.

A man stood near the sinks, tall, broad in the shoulders, a phone pinned between his ear and his jaw. He was tucking his shirt into his trousers. His belt hung open.

He looked up.

I froze.

"—no, tell Singapore we'll circle back Thursday," he said into the phone, calm as anything. Then his eyes met mine in the mirror. Gray eyes. A little silver at his temples.

"Oh my God. Oh my God, I'm so sorry—"

"It's fine."

"It's not fine! This is—this is the men's room, isn't it?"

His mouth twitched. "Executive washroom. But yes. Generally men."

"I'm leaving. I'm gone. I never saw anything."

"That's generous of you."

I backed into the doorframe, bounced off it, and fled.

In the hallway, I pressed my forehead against the cool wall. *Quit. Just quit. Move to Ohio. Raise goats.*

"Ms. Brooks?" A young assistant waved from the far end. "They're ready for you."

---

The conference room had glass walls and a long white table. Five people sat around it.

At the head sat the man from the washroom.

Belt fastened now. Jacket on. Sleeves crisp.

My stomach dropped straight through the floor.

"Ah." He rose and buttoned his jacket. "Everyone, this is Evelyn Brooks from Brooks & Moreno. Evelyn, I'm Nathaniel Hayes."

The founder. The CEO. The man whose name was on the building.

He offered his hand. I shook it, praying mine wasn't damp.

"Evelyn," he said, warm and easy, "we've technically met already. Haven't we?"

Four heads turned toward me.

A woman in a navy blazer arched a brow. "You two know each other?"

"Briefly," I said.

"Very briefly," Nathaniel agreed, and sat back down.

I wanted to crawl under the table and live there.

Instead, I opened my laptop.

"So." My voice came out too high. I cleared my throat. "Thank you for having me. Let's talk about how Hartwell reaches people under thirty this fall."

The first slide went up. Then the second. By the fourth, my hands had stopped shaking. Numbers were safe. Strategy was safe. Nobody's belt was involved.

"Gen Z doesn't trust ads," I said. "They trust people. So instead of a polished campaign, we build a creator series. Real founders, early careers, messy stories. We call it *First Draft*."

The woman in navy, whose name card read Diane Okafor, VP of Brand, leaned forward. "Messy is risky."

"Messy is honest," I said. "And honest is what they share."

Nathaniel hadn't said a word. He watched me with his chin resting on two fingers, his face impossible to read.

Then he tapped the table once.

"You cited Marcus Feld's agency in your research. Do you know him?"

"I do, actually. Marcus was my upperclassman at NYU. He was a senior when I was a freshman. He's the reason I took my first marketing class."

"A senior?"

"Yes. He mentored our alumni startup group. He used to say every founder needs one disaster story before they're allowed to succeed."

Nathaniel's lips curved. Just slightly.

"Marcus was a fifth-year senior," he said. "He failed statistics twice. I know, because I tutored him."

Diane snorted into her coffee.

I stared at him. "You're joking."

"I never joke about statistics."

"He told us he graduated early."

"He tells everyone that. He also claims he invented the hashtag."

A laugh burst out of me before I could stop it. Loud. Totally unprofessional. The man beside Diane grinned.

And just like that, the air in the room shifted.

Nathaniel Hayes wasn't the cold, stiff mogul from the business magazines. He was dry. Quick. He'd noticed my trembling hands in the first minute and given me something to laugh about instead.

"So," he said, "your theory is that Marcus's disaster story qualifies him to succeed."

"My theory is that everyone's does." I met his eyes. "Some of us just have our disasters earlier in the day."

Silence.

Diane looked from him to me, completely lost.

Nathaniel's gaze held mine for a beat too long. Then he looked down at his notes, but I caught the corner of his mouth lifting.

"Walk me through the budget," he said.

I did. Every line. Every risk. He asked three questions, each sharper than the last, and I answered every one.

When I closed my laptop, my pulse was pounding in my ears.

Nathaniel stood. "Diane, you're meeting with Corvus Creative at three?"

"That's right."

"Take it without me." He slid his phone into his pocket. "I don't think I need to be there."

Diane's eyebrows shot up. She glanced at me, then smiled like she'd just figured out the ending of a movie.

My heart nearly stopped.

*Did that just happen? Did he just—*

"Ms. Brooks." Nathaniel nodded at me on his way out. "Thank you for your time."

"Thank you, Mr. Hayes."

"Nathaniel," he corrected. "I think we're past formalities."

The glass door swung shut behind him.

---

I made it to the elevator before I let myself smile.

Twenty floors down, my phone buzzed.

**From: Nathaniel Hayes**

**Subject: Today**

*Your proposal was better than your timing.*

Heat flooded my face. I read it three times. Then a fourth.

Was he teasing me? Was that a compliment? Was this how billionaires flirted, or how they rejected you?

My thumbs flew before my brain could vote.

*I promise my campaigns are usually less chaotic than my entrances.*

I hit send and instantly wanted to throw my phone into the East River.

Ten floors. Eleven. Twelve.

Buzz.

A single smiley face.

That was all. One tiny yellow circle.

I laughed out loud in an empty elevator, clutching my phone like a teenager.

It had been the most humiliating morning of my life. And maybe the luckiest. A strange, lucky business meeting with a man I'd probably never see outside a conference room again.

The doors opened onto the lobby.

I stepped out into the September sun, still smiling at my screen.

I had no idea that smiley face was the first crack in a wall I'd spent years building.

Or that Nathaniel Hayes was about to walk straight through it.
