Chapter 1 of My Husband Punished Me for a Child That Was Never His Rival's

He married me knowing I'd lost a baby once.

He just never asked whose it was before he decided he hated me for it.

I gave up my jewelry label the week we wed, because he said a wife of his didn't need to work.

I learned to plate his dinner the second his car turned into the drive, still steaming, because cold food meant a night of that quiet, cutting voice.

He called me a money-burning liability in front of his mother and smiled while he did it.

His secretary whispered that she'd seen me laughing with another man, and my husband came home early to check whether I still wore his scent.

He kissed me until I stopped fighting, then punched the wall.

"Can you only smile for him?" he said. "Did aborting his child make you that happy?"

So I told him the cruelest thing I owned.

"Yes. He's the only man I'd ever have a child for."

His hand landed before I finished the sentence.

I walked out and didn't come back for a day and a night.

I was still at the bar when a voice from seven years ago sat down beside me.

"Are you happy," Elias asked, "married to the man you loved most?"

I said nothing.

"Does he know," he said quietly, "the truth about why you lost it?"

I shook my head.

He offered to take me home with him. I went back to my husband's house instead, to keep it clean.

I opened the door to my husband half-undressed, his secretary in lace pressed against his bare chest.

"Turn the heat up on the tray," Eleanor commanded from the dining room, her voice echoing off the marble floors. "My son refuses to eat cold meat."

"I know," I said, adjusting the dial.

The steak sizzled on the warming tray for the third time tonight. My eyes darted to the silver watch on my wrist, tracking the second hand as it ticked toward seven-thirty. The exact moment the garage door would open. Being one minute late meant enduring Damien’s calm, cutting voice for the rest of the night. He never yelled. He just dissected you with words until there was nothing left.

"You always say you know, Vivian, yet the food is consistently mediocre," Eleanor continued, her chair scraping against the floor as she shifted. "If you cannot manage a simple kitchen staff, I shudder to think how you manage my son's household."

"The chef had a family emergency," I said, staring at the juices pooling around the meat. "I'm handling the dinner myself."

"Then it will be inedible," she replied flatly. "A woman of your background should at least know how to cook. What else are you good for? You certainly don't contribute financially."

"I contribute in other ways," I said quietly.

"Arranging flowers is not a contribution," Eleanor scoffed.

I didn't answer. I rubbed the bare skin on my left hand. My emerald engagement ring—the one I designed myself—was gone, locked away in his safe. He said it looked too cheap for an Ashford wife. Too flashy. Too independent.

It had been 314 days since I last sat at a drafting table. 314 days since I held a pencil for anything other than a grocery list.

The rumble of the engine vibrated through the floorboards. Right on time.

"He's here," Eleanor announced, as if I couldn't hear the heavy thud of the garage door closing. "Make yourself presentable. You look exhausted. It's unflattering."

I smoothed the front of my dress and stepped out of the kitchen.

The heavy oak door swung open. Damien walked into the dining room, shrugging off his tailored coat. He didn't look at his mother. He looked straight at me.

"Look at this," Damien said, a sharp smile forming on his lips as he tossed his briefcase onto a chair. "My beautiful, expensive liability."

Eleanor chuckled from the head of the table. "She does know how to drain an account, Damien."

"That she does," he replied, loosening his tie. "Did you buy another useless painting today, Vivian? Or just more shoes you'll never wear outside?"

I stepped forward and reached up to fix his collar, which had been ruffled by the wind outside. My fingers brushed the cold silk.

"I didn't buy anything today," I said softly, smoothing the fabric against his neck.

"Good," he murmured, stepping past me. He didn't offer a kiss. He didn't even brush my shoulder. "Keep it that way. The accountant asked me why my wife needs a separate allowance for art supplies. I told him it was a mistake."

"It wasn't a mistake," I said, my voice barely audible. "I just wanted some charcoal pencils."

"You have no use for them," Damien said, not looking back.

Two years ago, he knelt with that emerald ring and told me the work of my hands shone brighter than diamonds. One week after our wedding, he demanded the keys to Verline. My studio. My two-million-dollar-a-year life's work.

"Wives of Ashford men don't peddle sketches to strangers," he had told me, locking the door to my office and handing the keys to his lawyer. "You work for me now. And your job is to stand by my side and look perfect."

I grabbed the plates from the kitchen counter and carried them out. I placed the porcelain dish in front of him.

"Where is your ring, Vivian?" Eleanor asked suddenly, pausing with her wine glass halfway to her mouth.

"Damien locked it in the safe," I said.

"Good," Eleanor said. "It looked cheap. An Ashford wife should wear diamonds, not some green stone you cobbled together in a workshop."

"It was an emerald," I said, my gaze dropping to the floor.

"It was an embarrassment," Damien corrected, slicing into his steak. "I bought you a five-carat diamond for a reason. Wear it."

"Yes, Damien."

"You've been married long enough," Eleanor said, setting her wine glass down with a sharp clink. "The Ashford estate needs an heir, Vivian. What exactly are you doing all day in this massive house?"

"I manage the staff, Eleanor," I said, keeping my voice even. "I oversee the renovations on the south wing. I handle the charity galas."

"Managing staff doesn't produce a child," she snapped back, cutting her eyes toward my flat stomach. "Damien is thirty-two. His peers are already sending their kids to private preschools. And you just arrange flowers and waste space."

"Mother," Damien warned, though his tone held no real anger. It was a lazy reprimand.

"Don't 'Mother' me," she said. "I want a grandson. You work yourself to the bone for this family, and she sits here, barren and useless. I told you to marry a woman from a proper family. Not a jewelry maker."

Damien let out a low, mocking laugh. He sliced into the meat again, not bothering to look at me.

"Don't hold your breath, Mother," he said, chewing the rare cut. "With her kind of body, I doubt she can give an Ashford a seed."

My fingertips dug into the fabric of my dress, pressing hard against my knees. I didn't speak. I didn't defend myself.

The truth about the miscarriage three years ago was a secret I kept buried. The blood on the bathroom floor, the sterile hospital room, the doctor's quiet apologies. I wouldn't even tell him. Let him think I was broken. Let him think I was barren. It was safer that way.

I reached across the table, took his plate, and cut the remaining steak into precise, bite-sized pieces. I pushed the porcelain dish back in front of him. I aligned his knife and fork perfectly straight against the rim.

"Eat while it's hot," I said softly.

"I decide when I eat," Damien said, his voice dropping an octave. The lazy amusement was gone, replaced by that cold, flat tone I dreaded.

"Of course," I replied, taking a step back.

"Pour the wine," Eleanor ordered, tapping her empty glass. "And don't spill it on the tablecloth this time."

I picked up the heavy crystal decanter and filled her glass, then moved to Damien's. The dark red liquid splashed gently against the sides.

"Stop," he commanded. "That's enough."

I set the decanter down. "Do you need anything else?"

"Just quiet," he said, staring at his phone screen. "I have a merger to finalize tomorrow. I don't need your chatter."

I hadn't said more than twenty words since he walked in.

"I'll check on dessert," I said.

I turned my back to the table and walked into the kitchen, letting the swinging door shut behind me. It didn't close all the way, leaving a narrow crack.

Colette, the head maid, emerged from the hallway and stepped up to the dining table. I froze, hidden in the shadows of the kitchen.

She leaned in close to Damien's chair. Her voice was a hushed, venomous whisper slipping right through the gap in the door.

"Madame was with that man again this afternoon."

The scraping of Damien's knife against the porcelain plate stopped abruptly.

Through the narrow opening, I watched him set his utensils down, perfectly straight.

"Which man?"
