Chapter 3

Yasmin cut me and left that scar on my thigh when I was in college. She and her roommates tortured me and left many scars on my body, which made me scared of wearing skirts or short sleeves.

After I met Charlie, I developed an inferiority complex and didn't dare let him see it. Therefore, I tried to remove the scars on my body intentionally or unintentionally. However, the scar on my thigh was too deep, and I couldn't make it disappear, no matter what I did.

Charlie used to look at this scar with sympathy in his eyes and felt sorry for me.

But when the scar he had caressed day and night was presented in front of his eyes, he couldn't recognize it.

Or rather, he couldn't believe it.

"We are under a lot of pressure. The next thing we have to do is to compare the deceased's DNA with our DAN resource library."

Kyle looked at the body lying on the dissection table with a solemn expression and said in astonishment, "The murderer must have hated the deceased to guts. He actually destroyed her entire body with sulfuric acid."

Charlie stared at my body and hesitated for a moment, then said, "Could it be someone the deceased know who committed the crime?"

"If that's the case, we need to speed up and identify the deceased."

Kyle immediately made arrangements and asked his men to investigate the crime scene and ask around. He didn't stay idle, either. After saying goodbye to Charlie, Kyle went to the laboratory to keep an eye on the inspection.

Then, there were only Charlie, Coroner Zander, and me in the autopsy room.

"Wait." Charlie put on his gloves calmly, took the tweezers from Coroner Zander's hand, fiddled with my fingernail, and picked out a tiny black thing from it. "Look, what is this?"

"Hey, I didn't see it just now. Put it in. I'll bring it to the laboratory later."

Coroner Zander brought the evidence bag, put the thing in it, and said cheerfully, "Professor Hector, you've got sharp eyes. I'll have to trouble you to help me more."

"If we find more clues, we can let the deceased rest in peace soon."

Charlie hummed lightly, staring at my body with an expressionless look.

After a while, Coroner Zander suddenly thought of something and said, "Do you remember that man who was also ruined by sulfuric acid and died last month? I heard that the young man was a social news reporter for the News Daily. I remember your wife is also a reporter for this newspaper, right?"

Yes, that young man was a new member of our team. He was retaliated against not long after he started working. But in the end, a homeless man took the blame.

No one was willing to believe that a homeless man could have access to sulfuric acid, but after various investigations, all the evidence led to him. So, the case was closed just like that.

What people didn't know was that after my colleague passed away, I took over his job.

Charlie seemed reluctant to mention my name. He glanced at Zander coldly and asked, "What are you saying?"

Coroner Zander smiled awkwardly, "It just suddenly came to my mind. You should remind your wife to be careful. It's not easy to be a reporter these days. Safety is the most important thing."

Charlie didn't say anything. He just asked Zander to continue working.

But he seemed unable to stay in the autopsy room any longer and walked out.

Charlie took out his phone and checked it, but there was still no reply from me.

Anger appeared in Charlie's eyes, and his words became harsh.

"How long are you gonna keep doing this? Do you think it's fun to hide from me?"

"Your colleague has already reported about you to the police. Do you really have to make such a big deal?"

"Nora Julian, if you really don't want to live like this anymore, come back and get a divorce!"

Chapter 4

After sending the last message, Charlie seemed to have vented his anger, and his expression eased a lot.

I calmly looked at the messages he sent me and wanted to reply with an "Okay".

But when my hand touched the phone, it went straight through the screen.

Charlie was fully focused on solving the case. But Yasmin kept calling him to ask him out for dinner.

After declining her three times, he had no more excuses to refuse. So, he went on the date.

As soon as Yasmin saw him, her eyes were filled with love. "Charlie, I've thought it through after what happened last time. It's okay if you don't want a divorce. We'll always be best friends, okay?"

Seeing that she had thought it through, Charlie replied with a smile, "Okay, you will always be my best friend."

The smile on his face hurt my eyes badly.

After dinner, Yasmin insisted on going to the movies. "You have rejected me several times. Can't you accompany me wholeheartedly this time? When I was falsely accused and imprisoned before, I wanted to be with you so much..."

"Okay, I'll go. What movie do you want to watch?"

Every time she brought that up, Charlie would always agree to anything she wanted unconditionally.

Yasmin also knew that and used it often.

They had just walked into the cinema with popcorn and Cokes when a stranger called Charlie.

He glanced at the incoming call notification, hesitating whether to answer it.

Yasmin took the initiative to hang up the phone. "You agreed to accompany me wholeheartedly today."

As soon as she finished speaking, the stranger called again.

But Yasmin hung up again.

"Charlie, why don't you turn off your phone?"

"No," He replied resolutely. Realizing that his attitude was not good, Charlie changed a soft tone, "Our school or the bureau could contact me any time. I can't turn off my phone."

Yasmin curled her lips and said, "Fine."

Just as they sat down to watch the movie, Charlie got a call from Kyle. He frowned and stood up to leave, but Yasmin grabbed his clothes and said, "Charlie, where are you going?"

"The bureau is calling me. You watch the movie yourself."

He gently shook her hand off and walked quickly out of the cinema.

Charlie answered the phone as he walked, "What's the matter? Did you find anything critical?"

"Charlie, you... come to the bureau. Psycho yourself up for it."

Kyle's words left Charlie confused, so the latter could only rush to the bureau.

When he got there, he found that Ashley was also there with bloodshot eyes.

"What happened?"

Ashley bit her lip and handed over a USB flash drive. "This is the USB flash drive I found when I was sorting out Nora's drawer today. Take a look for yourself."

With a solemn look, Charlie borrowed a computer from Kyle and checked the contents of the flash drive right on the spot.

As soon as he plugged it into the computer, a ten-minute video popped up.

After seeing the scenes in the video, Charlie felt as if he was struck by lightning, and his solemn face froze.

That was a video that Yasmin sent to me as a warning on the day she was released from prison.

It showed the evil things she did to me in college.

In the video, Yasmin looked excited, kicking and hitting me wantonly, cursing at me viciously.

When Kyle saw this video, he was filled with anger and punched the table.

Charlie's body became stiff. He watched the video again and again, and his fists clenched unconsciously.

"Captain Griffin, I don't think Nora is running away from home. Please go look for her. She must be in danger now."

Ashley's voice was choked with sobs as she cried and begged.

I was glad to hear that. I helped Ashely at work a lot when I was alive, and she didn't let me down.

"What do you mean by that?"

Charlie spoke, his voice hoarse and dry, his eyes fixed on Ashley.

"I asked my boss today. Nora has been on a mission recently. We couldn't possibly lose contact of her for no reason. She also told me clearly last time that if she didn't contact me for three days, I must call the police. I'm telling you the truth."

Ashley spoke in a tearful and broken tone.

Kyle's face turned solemn when he heard this, and he also realized the seriousness of the matter.

Charlie stood up suddenly without waiting for Kyle to speak.

Then, people from the identification center came over with my DNA report.
