Chapter 1
On the day I died tragically in the sewer, my husband was sleeping with his childhood sweetheart, who had just been released from prison.
He didn't even answer my call for help.
"Yasmin suffers from neurasthenia. She just fell asleep. Don't make trouble for no reason."
Later, he came to the police station as a guest professor of criminal psychology to analyze the murderer's motives and witnessed the dissecting and suturing of my body.
He analyzed that the victim had suffered inhuman torture before she died, but he didn't know that the corpse that had been corroded by sulfuric acid belonged to his newlywed wife.
——
My body was discovered by a sanitation worker who was cleaning the streets early in the morning.
After receiving the alarm call, the police immediately responded and finally rescued me from the torture caused by the smelly sewer.
Soon, I was put on the dissection table in the police station.
As a professor of criminal psychology, Charlie Hector was also invited to conduct a psychological analysis of prisoners. When Coroner Zander saw him coming, he moved his chubby hands and said earnestly, "Professor Hector, you are finally here."
Charlie had a calm expression, showing no emotion, and his beautiful eyebrows furrowed.
"Let's begin the autopsy."
"Okay."
Charlie had always been meticulous in his work. He stared at my body on the dissecting table without blinking, as if he was appreciating an artist creating a fine work of art. There was no other emotion in his eyes at all.
My body was dismembered, so it wasn't easy to piece it back together. Besides, my face was corroded by sulfuric acid, so it wasn't difficult to tell how I originally looked.
"The deceased had struggled violently before her death. The marks on her neck were left by the thin rope before her death. The murderer must have enjoyed torturing her at that time."
Charlie spoke calmly, and Coroner Zander added in confusion, "So, the deceased had a strong desire to live. But why did she stop struggling later?"
Charlie stared at my neck with deep eyes as if he wanted to see through my body.
After a long while, he said causally, "Perhaps she realized that she couldn't escape. So, she chose to accept her fate."
"No, that's not the case." I thought.
Bitterness rose in my heart. I looked straight at Charlie, feeling disappointed.
Just as the coroner said, I had a strong desire to live, and I had been expecting Charlie to come and save me. Calling him was my last ray of hope, but after he answered the phone, I heard him say, "Yasmin suffers from neurasthenia. She just fell asleep. Don't make trouble for no reason."
At that moment, I finally understood that no matter what I did, he only cared about his childhood sweetheart.
I gave up hope and stopped struggling.
After a series of analyses, they obtained no helpful information.
Well, they didn’t even know who the deceased was. How could they get any useful information?
As soon as Charlie came out of the autopsy room, he found the captain of the criminal investigation team and asked him to check the missing persons registered in the entire city.
However, there were many missing persons reported in the city this year, and it would take a lot of time to check them one by one.
I gave a bitter smile as I shook my head. Then, I whispered in his ear,
Unfortunately, he couldn't hear me.
Charlie stayed in the police station for a while and then went outside to get some fresh air. The captain of the criminal investigation team also came out.
He took some cigarettes from his pocket and handed Charlie one.
Charlie didn't usually smoke, but he never refused cigarettes offered to him by others.
He held the unlit cigarette between his fingers as if he was really smoking.
The captain of the criminal investigation team, Kyle Griffin, wasn't surprised at that. He took a deep drag on a cigarette and asked with a worried look on his face, "Do you have any clues about the case?"
"No, the information we got was too little to piece together anything useful."
"Okay. I'm afraid I'll have to trouble you with it recently. Let's call it a day. Now, go home and accompany your wife. You just got married. You can't ignore your wife." Kyle smiled and pushed Charlie's arm. "I was busy and didn't attend your wedding. When this is over, I'll treat you two to a meal."
Charlie looked relaxed and said nonchalantly, "That can wait."
Chapter 2
No one knew that Charlie and I had a big fight before I died.
He imitated my handwriting, signed the Letter of Understanding behind my back, and rescued his childhood sweetheart who had committed a crime from prison.
When I learned about this, I broke down on the spot and questioned him why.
But he said coldly, "She was just young and being ignorant. Do you have to make a big deal out of this?"
In his opinion, I was the unreasonable one.
But I was the one who was bullied and threatened.
I couldn't accept the result and wanted to appeal, but he just left after saying,
"Calm down. I'll contact you when you think it through."
However, he probably didn't expect us to be separated forever.
"Charlie, is this the justice you've been upholding?" I wanted to ask him.
I looked at his face, and suddenly, I felt like I had never known him.
Kyle chatted with him for a while and then went back to the bureau.
After he left, Charlie pinched the cigarette butt between his fingertips, threw it into the trash can, and left as well.
He returned home and found the house dark and silent.
Charlie stared in the direction of the bedroom. Just as he took a few steps towards it, the phone in his pocket rang.
When he picked up the phone, Yasmin Luke's crying voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Charlie, I'm so scared. Can you come over?"
Charlie became nervous suddenly. "Don't be afraid. I'll right over."
Looking at his nervous expression, I felt bitter.
I thought he didn't care about anything and was always calm and nonchalant, and I never saw any other expressions on his face.
And now, I saw a different Charlie because of Yasmin.
Only then did I realize that he was also an ordinary person, with his own joys and sorrows.
Charlie didn't hang up the phone. He hurried over while comforting her through the phone.
When he arrived at her house, Yasmin, who was wearing a halter dress, threw herself at Charlie, crying.
Charlie paused and let her hold him.
After a while, he pushed her away calmly.
"Yasmin, you shouldn't have called me."
The crying Yasmin looked petite and cute. Anyone who saw her red and watery eyes would feel sorry for her.
No one would think of her as an abuser.
Therefore, when Charlie found out that she was the one bullying me, he got mad and thought it was just a trick I used to win his favor.
Later, even if I provided evidence and sent Yasmin to jail, he still believed her unconditionally.
"Charlie, I don't care about anyone except you. Can you just stay here with me?"
"I'm married."
Charlie avoided her hand quietly and spoke with forbearance and restraint.
"Then divorce her. You marred her to save me, remember? If she hadn't fabricated those things to send me to jail, we would have been married now."
Yasmin’s words hit me hard.
I stared at Charlie in a daze.
Charlie sighed helplessly, "But I did marry her, so I should take responsibility for her."
"What's so good about her? You've been out for so many days. Has she ever called you? She doesn't care about you at all."
Yasmin cried and accused me. Charlie pursed his lips and said nothing. I could tell he was a bit upset.
"She'll contact me when she comes around."
Charlie didn't stay with Yasmin for long. He consoled her with a few words and then left.
After he left Yasmin, Charlie seemed to realize something because of Yasmin's words and called me several times in a row.
But as expected, none of the calls went through.
His brows were tainted with a hint of anger as he sent me the messages.
"How long are you gonna keep being mad?"
"You did something wrong. When can you be reasonable?"
"Charlie, I'm right beside you." I thought.
The next day, Charlie woke up and checked his phone, but there was still no reply from me.
He pursed his lips and was about to send something to me when he received a call from the bureau.
He drove quickly to the bureau.
As soon as Charlie walked in, he saw a woman saying something anxiously in the hall.
Kyle saw him coming and walked towards him. "Go have a look. This woman said she came to report someone missing."
"What does that have to do with me?"
Kyle paused and said, "The missing person she reported was your wife, Nora Julian."
"That's impossible." Charlie blurted out without even thinking.
My colleague Ashley Dean saw Charlie and hurried over. She had attended our wedding and recognized my husband.
"You are Nora's husband, right? Do you have any news about her?" Ashley asked anxiously, "Nora told me to call the police if she didn't contact me for three days, but the police didn't believe me. Please tell them..."
Charlie's cold face showed some disdain, and he said frankly, "She has been mad at me recently. Maybe she deliberately hie herself just to make us worry about her. If we leave her alone, she will come back herself."
Ashley was skeptical. "Really?"
"Yeah. If she contacts you, please tell her that she doesn't have to come home if she runs away like this again."
Charlie spoke coldly, without any emotion in his eyes, as if he was saying something insignificant.
Kyle was startled. He met Ashley's shocked eyes and said, "Don't listen to him. The young couple are fighting these days. If you hear from Nora, please tell her to be careful and go back early."
"Ah... Okay."
Kyle glanced at Charlie, who looked sullen, and then he led Charlie back to the autopsy room.
"Why did you have to behave like that? Women need to be pleased. You may lose your wife if you continue this way."
Charlie's eyes flashed with sarcasm, and he said confidently, "She can't live without me."
Yes, I used to think I couldn’t live without him.
My parents died in a car accident when I was little. So, Charlie was my only family.
Before I discovered he was Yasmin's childhood sweetheart, I really relied on him.
I thought I found love, but it turned out I countered a fatal plot.
I touched my heart, which no longer beat, and I felt pain.
Kyle shook his head helplessly and took Charlie into the autopsy room.
"We only pieced together the deceased's body roughly yesterday. We must restore the body as soon as possible and get clues from it."
As soon as Kyle finished speaking, Coroner Zander gasped.
Charlie asked, "What's wrong?"
"Look, there is a knife-long scar on the deceased's thigh. It feels like it has hyperplasia, and it looks like it has been there for quite some years."
Upon hearing this, Charlie's face froze. He quickly stepped forward and looked at my body carefully.
The more he looked at my body, the worse his face became. Then, he seemed to have thought about something, and his expression softened again.
"Professor Hector, did you find anything?"
"No. Go ahead."
Chapter 3
Yasmin cut me and left that scar on my thigh when I was in college. She and her roommates tortured me and left many scars on my body, which made me scared of wearing skirts or short sleeves.
After I met Charlie, I developed an inferiority complex and didn't dare let him see it. Therefore, I tried to remove the scars on my body intentionally or unintentionally. However, the scar on my thigh was too deep, and I couldn't make it disappear, no matter what I did.
Charlie used to look at this scar with sympathy in his eyes and felt sorry for me.
But when the scar he had caressed day and night was presented in front of his eyes, he couldn't recognize it.
Or rather, he couldn't believe it.
"We are under a lot of pressure. The next thing we have to do is to compare the deceased's DNA with our DAN resource library."
Kyle looked at the body lying on the dissection table with a solemn expression and said in astonishment, "The murderer must have hated the deceased to guts. He actually destroyed her entire body with sulfuric acid."
Charlie stared at my body and hesitated for a moment, then said, "Could it be someone the deceased know who committed the crime?"
"If that's the case, we need to speed up and identify the deceased."
Kyle immediately made arrangements and asked his men to investigate the crime scene and ask around. He didn't stay idle, either. After saying goodbye to Charlie, Kyle went to the laboratory to keep an eye on the inspection.
Then, there were only Charlie, Coroner Zander, and me in the autopsy room.
"Wait." Charlie put on his gloves calmly, took the tweezers from Coroner Zander's hand, fiddled with my fingernail, and picked out a tiny black thing from it. "Look, what is this?"
"Hey, I didn't see it just now. Put it in. I'll bring it to the laboratory later."
Coroner Zander brought the evidence bag, put the thing in it, and said cheerfully, "Professor Hector, you've got sharp eyes. I'll have to trouble you to help me more."
"If we find more clues, we can let the deceased rest in peace soon."
Charlie hummed lightly, staring at my body with an expressionless look.
After a while, Coroner Zander suddenly thought of something and said, "Do you remember that man who was also ruined by sulfuric acid and died last month? I heard that the young man was a social news reporter for the News Daily. I remember your wife is also a reporter for this newspaper, right?"
Yes, that young man was a new member of our team. He was retaliated against not long after he started working. But in the end, a homeless man took the blame.
No one was willing to believe that a homeless man could have access to sulfuric acid, but after various investigations, all the evidence led to him. So, the case was closed just like that.
What people didn't know was that after my colleague passed away, I took over his job.
Charlie seemed reluctant to mention my name. He glanced at Zander coldly and asked, "What are you saying?"
Coroner Zander smiled awkwardly, "It just suddenly came to my mind. You should remind your wife to be careful. It's not easy to be a reporter these days. Safety is the most important thing."
Charlie didn't say anything. He just asked Zander to continue working.
But he seemed unable to stay in the autopsy room any longer and walked out.
Charlie took out his phone and checked it, but there was still no reply from me.
Anger appeared in Charlie's eyes, and his words became harsh.
"How long are you gonna keep doing this? Do you think it's fun to hide from me?"
"Your colleague has already reported about you to the police. Do you really have to make such a big deal?"
"Nora Julian, if you really don't want to live like this anymore, come back and get a divorce!"
