Chapter 1 of Unmasking the Corrupt Attorney

The sleek black car pulled through the wrought iron gates of my family estate, the familiar sight of the mansion rising before me like a monument to everything I'd lost. As we approached the driveway, I noticed something immediately wrong—three unfamiliar vehicles parked haphazardly where only my father's classic Bentley once stood.

"Miss Stephanie," Margaret's voice broke through my thoughts as the car stopped. My childhood nanny—the woman who'd raised me after Mother became too fragile—stood at the entrance, her weathered hands wringing a handkerchief.

I stepped out, my legs unsteady after the long flight from Singapore. Margaret rushed forward, enveloping me in an embrace that smelled of lavender and home.

"Oh, Miss," she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "I'm so sorry. So very sorry."

I couldn't speak. The words stuck in my throat as Margaret held me, her body trembling with silent sobs. We stood there for a long moment, two women clinging to each other in the gathering dusk.

"Come inside," she finally said, taking my hand. "You need to rest."

But as she led me through the grand foyer, I froze. The furniture—my mother's carefully selected antiques—had been rearranged. The painting of water lilies that had hung above the staircase for twenty years was gone, replaced by an abstract canvas of clashing colors.

"What happened here?" I whispered.

Margaret's grip tightened on mine. "She... they... it's all been changed."

I moved through the rooms like a ghost, each step revealing another desecration. In the living room, my mother's porcelain figurines had been pushed into a corner, replaced by modern sculptures. And there, on the mantelpiece where my parents' wedding portrait once stood, was a framed photograph of Kenneth and Marisol, their arms around each other, smiling at a gala I'd organized last year.

My stomach lurched. I turned away, only to see more photographs—intimate shots of them in various rooms of my house, displayed like trophies.

"Where are my parents' memorial photos?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

Margaret gestured toward a small cabinet in the corner. There, pushed aside like unwanted clutter, stood the silver frames containing the only images I had left of my father and mother.

Before I could respond, a voice drifted from the master bedroom—my bedroom.

"Well, well. Look who's finally home."

Marisol emerged from the doorway, wearing one of my silk robes—the pale blue one Alexander had given me for our third anniversary. She carried a champagne flute, her red-painted nails tapping against the crystal as she leaned against the doorframe.

"I must say, I'm surprised to see you here," she said, her voice dripping with false concern. "After everything that's happened, I thought you might have found... alternative arrangements."

I remained silent, watching her performance with a detachment that seemed to unsettle her.

"The case was quite unfortunate," she continued, taking a delicate sip of champagne. "Sometimes even the best legal arguments can't overcome certain circumstances, you know?"

"Two weeks," she added casually. "I've been here two weeks now. Kenneth needed someone to help him... adjust to the new reality."

She stepped closer, her eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "We've made some changes. I hope you don't mind. The house needed a woman's touch—a real woman's touch."

She gestured around the room, pointing out the new bedsheets she'd purchased, the closet space she'd claimed for herself. "I've been documenting everything on Instagram," she said, pulling out her phone. "The response has been incredible. Everyone loves seeing how Kenneth's life has... upgraded."

Later that evening, Kenneth arrived home. I was sitting in my mother's favorite room, surrounded by classical music, my wedding ring placed on the table before me.

"Stephanie," he said, not bothering with pleasantries. "We need to discuss the logistics of our separation."

His tone was dismissive, patronizing—as if explaining something simple to a child. "Our marriage has run its course," he continued. "You need to be reasonable about the division of assets."

"Did you instruct Marisol to sabotage my father's case?" I asked quietly.

Kenneth laughed—a cold, hollow sound. "You're overwrought with grief and imagining conspiracies. This is exactly why I need someone more stable in my life."

He placed a stack of papers on the table—divorce documents that would leave me with almost nothing.

"I expect you to sign these within the week," he said, straightening his tie—a nervous habit I'd once found endearing. "And I suggest you resign from any professional positions that might create embarrassment for me."

As he turned to leave, I picked up my wedding ring, studying it under the lamplight. The diamond caught the glow, fracturing it into a thousand tiny rainbows.

"Goodbye, Kenneth," I whispered, though he was already gone.

I held the ring tighter, feeling its weight—the weight of promises broken and trust betrayed. Something shifted inside me then, something cold and hard taking root where grief had once lived.

The ring caught the light again as I turned it slowly between my fingers, my expression transforming from devastation to something far more dangerous.
