Chapter 1 of This time, I won't wait for anyone

Forty minutes.

The ice in my sparkling water had melted into flat, lukewarm liquid by the time the brass doors swung open.

Serena swept past the maître d', peeling off her cashmere wrap and letting it drop toward the server without looking back. She tossed her ivory Chanel clutch onto the pristine linen table, rattling the silverware.

"God, New York is still unbearable," Serena groaned, sliding into the leather booth across from me. "The traffic, the humidity, the people. I honestly don't know how you've survived here for five whole years, Zelia."

Behind her, Ethan followed.

Five years had sharpened his jawline and added a polished veneer to his tailored charcoal suit, but his eyes were unchanged. Dark, assessing, and entirely self-absorbed. The moment he reached the table, his gaze locked onto mine. He paused, waiting for the tremor in my hands or the sudden drop in my chin.

He waited for the ghost of the girl who had collapsed on the chapel steps five years ago, sobbing until her mascara ruined her veil while his limousine sped away into the rain.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch.

"You're late, Serena," I said, setting my glass down with a soft click against the wood.

"My blowout took longer than expected," she dismissed with an airy wave of her manicured fingers. "Besides, you're always free. It's not like you run a hedge fund."

Ethan pulled out the chair beside Serena, settling into it, though his eyes never drifted from my face.

"We only flew in last night," Ethan said, his voice dropping into that familiar, resonant baritone. "I just came to accompany Serena to see your parents."

"Ethan wanted to make sure they were settled after Dad's surgery," Serena chimed in, leaning her shoulder affectionately against his arm. "He's been so attentive. Honestly, I don't know what my family would do without him."

I folded my cloth napkin neatly in my lap. "Dad's surgery was three months ago. His recovery was finished by June."

Ethan's hand twitched against the stem of his wine glass. "We had business in London. We came as soon as my schedule cleared."

"How generous of you," I replied smoothly.

A heavy silence stretched across the table. Ethan kept watching me, scanning my posture, the simple cut of my cream silk blouse, the stillness in my hands. He seemed unsettled by the absence of tears. He had probably rehearsed this reunion on the private jet over the Atlantic, picturing a shattered woman demanding answers.

Instead, I met his stare with total disinterest.

"So," I began, gesturing faintly between the two of them. "When are you getting married? I'd like to prepare a gift in advance."

Serena's painted smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she tightened her grip around Ethan's bicep.

"We haven't set an exact date yet," Serena said, her voice turning artificially sweet. She tilted her head back to look at him, her fingers digging possessively into his sleeve. "Ethan keeps pushing it back. He always says there are things in the past that haven't been cleanly handled yet."

She threw that barb directly at me, waiting for the blow to land.

I picked up the leather-bound menu. "Unresolved debts are always a nuisance. You should take care of them quickly."

Ethan leaned forward, resting both forearms on the table. The distance between us closed by inches, and the atmosphere grew uncomfortably tight.

"Some debts take time, Zelia," Ethan said, his tone dropping low, wrapped in an ambiguous warmth that made my skin prickle. "I know how things ended. I know I left you behind, and I know I owe you an explanation."

Serena's head whipped toward him, her eyebrows pinching. "Ethan?"

He ignored her completely. His focus was entirely on me, intense and probing.

"Five years is a long time," he continued, softening his gaze as if we were alone in a candlelit room. "People change. We grew up. If you're willing to hear me out, we could sit down alone. Have a drink. We could get to know each other again."

A bitter, quiet laugh nearly broke from my throat.

He really believed I had spent the last half-decade pining for him in the shadows. He believed that leaving me at the altar was merely a misunderstanding to be swept away over a glass of vintage scotch.

"I don't think that would be appropriate, Ethan," I said evenly.

"Why not?" Ethan countered, his chin lifting with that old, arrogant confidence. "Because of pride? Zelia, look at me. I'm sitting right here."

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed against the marble tabletop.

The screen flared brightly.

The wallpaper illuminated the space between us: a photograph of a four-year-old boy in a navy sailor coat, laughing in front of an antique carousel. He had messy jet-black curls, a sharp, aristocratic nose, and piercing, unmistakable storm-grey eyes.

Ethan's eyes dropped to the screen.

His eyebrows pulled together, confusion replacing his smug charm. He stared at the vibrant, laughing boy for three whole seconds before letting out a dismissive scoff.

"What is that?" Ethan asked, leaning back against his chair as if trying to hide his sudden unease. "I didn't know you took a job at a daycare."

Serena leaned over, glancing at the glowing glass. "A preschool teacher? Really, Zelia? Is that what you've been doing with your life?"

"Which kid is that?" Ethan asked, swirling his Pinot Noir, attempting to sound completely unbothered. "One of your students?"

I picked up the phone. Looking at the small face on the screen, the guarded numbness in my chest instantly dissolved, replaced by warmth. A real smile curved my lips for the first time that afternoon.

"He's not a student," I said quietly, turning the phone face-down. "He's my son."

Ethan's hand clamped tight around his glass. The wine sloshed violently against the crystal rim, nearly spilling over the edge.

Across the table, Serena's practiced, porcelain smile froze entirely, cracking down the center.

"Your... what?" Ethan choked out, his voice scraping raw. "Your son?"

"You heard me," I said.

"That's impossible," Ethan snapped, his composure crumbling into sheer disbelief. "You never—who is he? Who's the father?"

"That isn't any of your business, Ethan."

Serena found her voice, shrill and venomous. "You had a bastard child? You've been hiding a kid in New York for four years? Does Dad know? Does anyone know what a disgrace—"

"Excuse me, ma'am."

A crisp, cultured voice broke through Serena's outburst.

The restaurant's general manager appeared beside our table. He ignored both Ethan and Serena entirely, bowing with practiced deference as he came to a stop beside my chair.

In his gloved hands, he held a sleek black umbrella and my lightweight trench coat.

"Mrs. Ashford," the manager said smoothly, his tone laced with absolute reverence. "Forgive the interruption. Your husband has sent the Maybach to the private entrance. The driver is waiting outside to escort you and the young master home."

Ethan’s mouth parted, all the color draining from his face.

Serena gripped the edge of the table so hard her knuckles turned white.

"Mrs... Ashford?" Ethan whispered, the name catching in his throat like broken glass.

I stood up, sliding my arms into the coat the manager offered, and met Ethan's hollow, panicked gaze one last time.
