Chapter 1 of My Divorce Papers at His Million-Dollar Altar

The divorce papers hit the counter, a sharp smack echoing through the silence.

"Sign them," Liam ordered, his arm wrapped around his mistress, Maya.

Hanging from her neck was my mother’s ruby pendant—ripped from my vault.

Liam thinks I’m a broke orphan he married for convenience, unaware that every cent of his lifestyle belongs to me.

Now he’s behind bars for fraud and attempted murder, but just as I reclaim my empire, a single medical alert reveals a secret that threatens to tie us together forever.

The thick stack of papers hit the marble kitchen island with a sharp smack.

"Sign them."

Liam's voice held no warmth. It carried the flat impatience of a man swatting away a particularly stubborn insect.

I stared down at the bold black letters centered on the top page. *Divorce Settlement Agreement*.

"You are doing this now?" I asked, my voice steady despite the sudden, rhythmic pounding vibrating against my ribs.

"I am done waiting, Cora." He tapped a perfectly manicured fingernail against the dense legal text. "The marriage is over. It has been over for a long time."

"Three years," I reminded him. "Three years of playing the obedient wife for your family, hosting your tedious corporate dinners, smiling for the local cameras, and you drop this on the counter on a Tuesday morning?"

"Do not play the victim. We both knew this was a business arrangement from the start." He crossed his arms. The custom wool fabric of his tailored suit pulled tight across his broad shoulders, a suit paid for by the very lifestyle he was now trying to sever. "You got the Sterling name to hide behind. I got my grandfather's corporate shares. The contract is up."

I reached out and flipped the heavy stock paper to the fourth page. My eyes tracked down the columns. Zeros. A long, uninterrupted line of zeros under the alimony and asset division sections.

"You are giving me nothing?"

"You brought nothing into this marriage," Liam stated coldly. "You leave with nothing."

"I brought my family's connections," I argued, gripping the edge of the cold marble counter. "You used my father's contacts to secure the harbor development project. That single deal made you millions in bonuses."

"And your father went bankrupt six months later." Liam uncrossed his arms and leaned his weight over the island, towering over me. "I bailed his pathetic company out of debt. We are exactly even."

He pointed to a block of dense text near the bottom of the page. "Look at section four, clause two."

I read the bold heading. "A non-disclosure agreement?"

"Standard operating procedure. You do not talk to the press. You do not post your sob story on social media. You do not run crying to my mother. You disappear quietly."

"And if I refuse to sign your standard procedure?"

"My lawyers will bury you in litigation until you cannot afford to buy groceries." Liam checked his heavy gold Rolex, then thrust a hand toward the arched entryway leading to the grand foyer. "You have exactly one hour to pack your cheap clothes and get out."

"An hour?" The sheer audacity of the demand spiked my tone. "This is my home, Liam."

"This is *my* house."

"I decorated every room. I spent months restoring the original hardwood floors by hand. I built a life here."

"My contractors did the actual work," he dismissed with a sneer. "You just pointed at color swatches and played house with my money. Now the lease is expired."

"You cannot just throw me out on the street. My name is on the deed."

"I had my legal team remove it yesterday morning. You signed the power of attorney last month, remember? For the alleged 'tax restructuring'." A cruel, mocking smirk crossed his lips. "You really are exactly as naive as everyone says."

Anger pulsed hot and heavy in my chest. "You planned this. For months."

"I like to be prepared. Fifty-five minutes. Go upstairs, pack a single bag, and leave the jewelry."

Soft footsteps padded against the restored hardwood floor in the hallway.

"Liam, baby? I am starving. Did the chef make those strawberry crepes I like?"

A woman strolled into the kitchen. She wore one of Liam's oversized white dress shirts, the hem barely skimming her bare thighs. Her legs flashed in the morning light as she bypassed me entirely, making a deliberate beeline for my husband.

Maya. His twenty-three-year-old assistant. The girl he claimed was just helping him organize his tight corporate schedule.

"I gave the kitchen staff the morning off," Liam murmured.

The harsh, impatient lines of his face instantly melted into something sickeningly soft. He pulled her against his side, pressing a kiss to the top of her messy hair. "I wanted some privacy to handle the trash."

I stood two feet away, completely invisible to the man I had slept beside for over a thousand nights.

"Aww, you are so sweet," Maya cooed. She finally shifted her gaze in my direction, offering a fake, highly exaggerated sympathetic pout. "Sorry, Cora. You just couldn't keep him entertained."

"Shut your mouth," I snapped.

"Do not speak to her like that," Liam warned, his voice turning sharp again. He reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a sleek black key fob. The silver crest of a luxury manufacturer gleamed under the pendant lights. He tossed it to Maya.

She caught it in midair, her eyes widening to comical proportions. "You didn't."

"Brand new 911 Carrera," Liam said proudly. "Parked right out front. Happy early birthday."

"Oh my god!" She threw her arms around his neck, pressing her body flush against his chest. "You are the absolute best."

I froze. My gaze snagged entirely on the hollow of Maya’s throat.

Resting against her collarbone, catching the sunlight, was a thick gold chain. Draping from it was a ruby clover pendant framed by delicate, flawless diamonds. A vintage Van Cleef & Arpels piece.

My mother’s necklace.

My fingernails dug into my palms. The sharp, piercing sting grounded me, keeping my knees from buckling under the crushing weight of the betrayal.

"Where did you get that?" I demanded. The words tore from my throat, raw and ragged.

Maya turned her head lazily. She rested her chin on Liam's shoulder and played with the gold chain, twirling the ruby between two fingers. "Do you like it? Liam gave it to me last night. He said the gold suited my skin tone much better than yours."

"Take it off."

"Cora, lower your voice," Liam ordered.

"I said take it off!"

I lunged forward, grabbing the edge of Liam's suit jacket to push past his broad frame and reach her.

Liam shoved me back hard. His large hand brushed the fabric of my wool sweater, treating me like a diseased animal. "Keep your hands off her," he snarled.

I stumbled backward. My hip slammed directly into the sharp edge of the marble island. Pain flared violently through my side, but I did not break eye contact with him.

Liam looked down at his own fingers. His nose wrinkled in blatant, theatrical disgust. He grabbed a paper towel from the dispenser and aggressively wiped the skin that had grazed my shirt. He scrubbed hard, turning his knuckles white, then tossed the crumpled paper into the trash bin as if washing away a toxic chemical.

"That necklace belonged to my mother," I said, my chest heaving with every breath. "My father bought it for her tenth anniversary. She wore it the day she died in the hospital bed. You knew that."

"It was sitting in a safe collecting dust," Liam replied, entirely unfazed by my outrage. "Maya saw it in the vault and wanted it. Consider it rent for the three years you lived under my roof for free."

"It is not about the money, you lying bastard. It is the only thing I have left of her."

Maya giggled. She twisted the ruby pendant tighter between her manicured fingers. "It is just jewelry, Cora. Do not be so dramatic. You can buy a fake one at the mall if you miss it so much."

"Take it off right now, or I will rip it off your neck myself."

Maya shrank back, burying her face into Liam's chest with feigned terror. "Liam, she is scaring me. Make her leave."

"Enough." Liam's voice cracked through the kitchen like a whip. "You are embarrassing yourself, Cora."

I stared at the man standing in my kitchen. The tailored suit, the perfectly styled hair, the cold, dead eyes—he was a complete stranger wearing my husband's face.

"I am not leaving without my mother's necklace," I stated, planting my feet firmly on the tile. "Call your lawyers. Call the police. I do not care."

"I will write you a check for the appraised value," Liam offered, his patience finally thinning.

"I do not want your dirty money."

Liam ignored my demand. He picked up the heavy Montblanc pen from the counter. Closing the distance between us in two long strides, he grabbed my wrist. His grip felt like an iron vice, instantly bruising the tender skin and locking my arm in place.

He slapped the pen into my palm, physically forcing my fingers to curl around the cold metal barrel.

"Sign it," Liam commanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. "Do not make me get ugly."
