Chapter 3
The clearing pulsed with unnatural energy as the tremors grew stronger. Alina's heart pounded in her chest, her wolf clawing at the surface in a mix of fear and rage. Seren stood at the center of the chaos, her golden eyes gleaming with triumph as the ground beneath her cracked, splitting the earth like jagged veins of fire.
"Seren!" Alina shouted, stepping forward despite the shaking ground. "What have you done?"
Her sister smirked, her posture relaxed as though she wasn't surrounded by carnage.
"This?" Seren gestured at the broken bodies and the fractured earth. "This is what strength looks like, little sister. This is power unchained."
"You've killed them," Alina spat, her voice trembling with fury. "These were your packmates, our people!"
"They were weak," Seren replied coldly, the malice in her tone sharp as a blade. "Just like Father, clinging to ancient traditions. They wouldn't survive the world that's coming."
“How could you do this seren?” Alina shouts at her sister betrayal coursing through her
Seren only laughed cruelly and shouts “How could I do this?! How could I betray the pack?! Why don’t you ask your precious parents what they’ve done!”
“What are you talking about?” Alina demanded, her voice cracking under the weight of Seren’s revelation. Her wolf recoiled, unsure whether to fight or mourn.
Seren’s cruel laughter echoed like thunder. “Oh, Alina. So naive. So blissfully ignorant,” she sneered, her golden eyes burning with contempt. “They’re not my parents. They never were. Your oh-so-precious mother and father only took me in because my real parents were slaughtered—slaughtered by your kind. By our pack and the other clans.”
Alina staggered back, the ground beneath her feet feeling less stable than the quaking earth. “No. That’s not true. My parents would never—”
“Would never what? Kill innocents to preserve their power? Sacrifice my family to protect their throne?” Seren interrupted, her voice rising with each word. “Open your eyes, Alina! The blood of my parents stains the very traditions you’re so desperate to uphold. They took me in to soothe their guilt, but I was never one of you.”
The other wolves, shaken and bewildered, whispered amongst themselves, their faces pale as they absorbed Seren’s accusation.
“Seren…” Alina whispered, her voice faltering. She didn’t know whether to deny it, defend her parents, or demand answers. All she knew was that the sister she’d grown up with—the sister she loved—was a stranger now. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Tell you?” Seren mocked, her laughter sharp and bitter. “And what would you have done, little sister? Held my hand and promised to fix it? Begged our ‘parents’ for forgiveness? No. I’ve spent my entire life smiling through their lies, waiting for the moment I could burn their world to the ground.”
The tremors intensified as Seren raised her arms, her power surging. “I don’t need your forgiveness, Alina. I don’t need your pity. This is the truth of our world—power decides who survives. And now, it’s my turn to choose who lives and who dies.”
Alina’s heart shattered, but she pushed down the pain, forcing herself to focus. “You don’t have to do this,” she pleaded, stepping forward again. Her wolf surged with desperation, ready to fight for what remained of her pack. “We can fix this. Together.”
Seren’s golden eyes softened for a fleeting second, a flicker of something familiar—regret, perhaps. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by cold resolve.
“It’s too late for that,” Seren said, her voice distant. “Too late for us.”
can keep your lies and your crumbling pack,” Seren spat. “But this? This belongs to me now.”
“Seren, no!” Alina lunged forward, but the ground cracked beneath her feet, forcing her back.
Seren smirked, her golden eyes gleaming. “Goodbye, little sister. Enjoy the ruins your family built.”
With a final surge of energy, Seren vanished, the Heartstone’s glow disappearing with her. The tremors slowed, leaving only silence and the scent of ash.
“Seren!” Alina called, but there was no answer—only broken ground and devastation.
Suddenly, rapid footsteps broke through the quiet. Alina turned to see her parents rushing toward her.
“Alina!” her mother cried, her face pale.
“Are you hurt?” her father asked, gripping her shoulders.
“I’m fine,” Alina said, trembling. “But Seren—she took the Heartstone. She said… she wasn’t my sister. That you killed her parents. Is it true?”
Her parents froze, their faces shadowed with guilt.
“Tell me!” Alina shouted, her voice raw.
Her father hesitated. “It’s… complicated.”
“Complicated?” Alina’s wolf growled within her. “She destroyed everything because of what you did! What really happened to Seren’s parents?”
Her father opened his mouth, but before he could answer, a distant howl shattered the stillness—a warning and a promise.
Alina’s heart pounded as she faced her parents. “Start talking.”
Their silence was deafening as the darkness pressed in, heavy with secrets.
Chapter 4
The fire crackled softly in the center of the room, its light casting flickering shadows on the tense faces gathered around it. Alina sat stiffly between Kieran and Rowan, her wolf restless under her skin. Her parents stood before them, their expressions heavy with the weight of the truth they were about to reveal.
Her father took a deep breath, his voice grave. “What Seren told you is… partly true. Her parents weren’t just killed—they were banished. But it wasn’t without cause.”
“Banished?” Alina repeated, her voice sharp. “Why? What did they do that was so terrible?”
Her mother exchanged a grim glance with her father before answering. “Kael and Mira—Seren’s parents—were spies. They allied themselves with the shadow wolves, working to infiltrate the clans and steal the Heartstone.”
The room seemed to grow colder. Kieran stiffened beside Alina, his jaw tightening, while Rowan’s golden eyes darkened.
“Shadow wolves?” Rowan asked, his tone skeptical. “I thought they were just stories to scare pups.”
“They’re real,” Alina’s father said gravely. “They’re wolves born of chaos and darkness, seeking to dominate and destroy the clans. Kael and Mira were working with them, using our trust to gain access to the Heartstone. When their betrayal was uncovered, the clan leaders acted quickly. They were banished, and we vowed to never speak of the shadow wolves again. It was decided that erasing their existence would protect the clans.”
Alina’s breath caught. “Then why take Seren in? If her parents were traitors, why didn’t you—”
“Because she was just a pup,” her mother interrupted, her voice soft but firm. “She didn’t choose her parents’ path. We believed raising her in the light of the pack would give her a chance to live differently.”
Kieran leaned forward, his voice low and sharp. “If this was meant to be a secret, then how does Seren know? Someone had to tell her.”
Her father’s jaw tightened, his gaze flickering to the fire. “That’s what we don’t know. The vow of secrecy was absolute. Only the clan leaders knew the full truth, and we swore to take it to our graves.”
“Then someone broke that vow,” Rowan said grimly, his voice steady. “Someone told Seren—and twisted the story to make the clans look like the villains.”
Alina’s stomach churned at the thought. “You think there’s a traitor? Someone from another clan?”
Her mother nodded reluctantly. “It’s possible. The shadow wolves thrive on chaos and division. If they’ve returned, it wouldn’t be hard for them to manipulate someone within the clans. Seren may believe we were the villains all along.”
Kieran’s eyes narrowed. “If that’s true, then the shadow wolves are using her—and now they have the Heartstone.”
Alina’s father clenched his fists. “If there’s a traitor among the clans, we need to find out who it is—and stop them before they cause more damage.”
Alina nodded, her heart pounding. Seren’s betrayal burned deep, but beneath the pain, her resolve grew stronger. “We’ll find her. And we’ll stop whoever’s behind this.”
