Chapter 1 of The Mark of the Alpha

The cold wind sliced through the towering pines of Moonshade Forest, carrying with it the faint scent of unease. Inside the grand hall of the pack’s estate, the murmurs of the gathered wolves rose and fell like the tide. Alina stood at the center, her hands clenched at her sides, her heart hammering against her ribs. Tonight would determine her future—and the future of the Moonshade Pack.

“I choose Kieran Blackthorn,” she declared, her voice clear and sharp as a blade.

The room fell into a stunned silence.

Lyanna, her mother and one-half of the Supreme Alpha pair, froze beside her. Her silver eyes, so like Alina’s own, glinted with disbelief and barely veiled fury. “You choose a rogue?” Her words dripped with disapproval, cutting through the silence like a whip. “A rogue Alpha, Alina? Are you mad?”

Her father, Darius, the other Supreme Alpha and Moonshade’s formal leader, stepped forward. His towering frame cast a long shadow over Alina, and his voice rumbled with quiet anger. “This isn’t just defiance, Alina. It’s betrayal.”

Alina met her father’s piercing gaze, refusing to waver. “I’m not betraying anyone. I’m choosing my own path.”

The gathered wolves erupted into murmurs, their voices a chaotic buzz that pressed against her senses. She could feel the weight of their judgment, the disbelief radiating from every corner of the room.

“This is bigger than you,” Lyanna hissed, stepping closer. “You’re the daughter of the Supreme Alpha bloodline. Your choices carry consequences—for this pack, for the Lunar Divide, for the Heartstone itself.”

The Heartstone. That word always brought an ache to Alina’s chest. The ancient relic, forged by the Moon Goddess, was the lifeblood of the Lunar Divide, a fragile alliance of four packs. Moonshade in the north, Sunclaw in the east, Duskfang in the south, and Stormfang in the west—each held their territory in balance, their unity safeguarded by the Heartstone. Alina’s family had been its protectors for generations, the weight of that responsibility always looming over her.

But tradition wasn’t enough to bind her to a life she didn’t choose.

“You expect me to bond with Rowan,” Alina said, her voice steady despite the tension crackling in the room. “To uphold a tradition that serves your alliances, not me.”

Rowan, the Beta she had been destined to mate with since childhood, stepped forward, his amber eyes flashing with anger. “This is about more than you, Alina,” he growled. “It’s about the pack’s survival. Do you think choosing a rogue makes you stronger? It makes you a liability.”

Alina’s wolf stirred, a low growl vibrating in her chest. “You don’t care about the pack, Rowan. You care about your position. You’ve always wanted the power that comes with my name, not me.”

Rowan’s aura flared, his anger palpable. “You don’t know what you’re throwing away.”

“Enough,” Darius barked, his voice silencing the hall. “Alina, this isn’t a game. If you break this bond, you weaken Moonshade’s ties to the other packs. Do you understand what that means? The Lunar Divide cannot survive without the Heartstone’s stability. And the Heartstone depends on us.”

Alina’s chest tightened, but she didn’t back down. “I know exactly what’s at stake,” she said. “And I know that binding myself to Rowan won’t save the Heartstone—or the pack. Kieran understands what it means to fight for survival. That’s the strength we need, not empty alliances.”

A ripple of shock moved through the crowd, and before anyone could respond, Kieran Blackthorn stepped into the hall.

The rogue Alpha’s presence was commanding, his aura dark and electric. His black leather jacket and sharp blue eyes stood out against the grandeur of the room, and his smirk carried an edge of defiance.

“You summoned me,” Kieran said, his voice calm yet dangerous as his gaze locked onto Alina. “I assume you’re ready to deal with the fallout.”

The murmurs rose again, but Rowan’s snarl cut through them. “You have no place here, Blackthorn,” he spat, his wolf bristling. “You’re nothing but a traitor and a killer.”

Kieran’s smirk didn’t falter. “And yet, she chose me.”

Rowan lunged, his claws extending, but Kieran was faster. In one fluid motion, he sidestepped the attack, his hand closing around Rowan’s wrist and twisting it back with brutal precision. The Beta snarled in pain but froze as Kieran’s voice dropped to a growl.

“Touch her again,” Kieran said, his tone low and lethal, “and I’ll remind you why rogues are feared.”

Alina’s heart raced, but not with fear. There was something exhilarating about Kieran’s confidence, his refusal to bow to anyone’s authority.

Lyanna’s voice cut through the tension, cold and sharp. “This pack is built on order and loyalty. You think choosing him will change that, Alina? The wolves won’t follow you. They’ll turn against you.”

“They’ll follow the truth,” Alina said, her voice firm. “And the truth is, I won’t be a pawn in this pack’s politics. I’m claiming my freedom—and my strength.”

Darius’s expression hardened, but he didn’t argue. His silence carried more weight than his words ever could.

As the crowd began to disperse, their murmurs fading into the night, Kieran turned to Alina. “Still sure about this?” he asked, his voice softer now, though his blue eyes still gleamed with amusement.

Alina nodded, her resolve unshaken. “Absolutely.”

Kieran’s smirk softened into something almost genuine. “Good. You’re going to need that stubbornness where we’re headed.”

The two stepped out into the cold night air, leaving the grand hall and its judgmental whispers behind. The forest stretched before them, vast and uncertain, but Alina felt a spark of hope for the first time in years.

The wind carried the faint howl of a wolf, long and haunting, from the depths of the woods. Alina glanced at Kieran, who seemed unfazed.

“Trouble already?” he asked, a teasing lilt in his voice.

Alina smirked. “Probably. But I’m ready for it.”

And with that, they disappeared into the shadows, leaving behind the only life Alina had ever known—and stepping into a future she would fight to claim as her own.
