Chapter 1 of The Cheater's Overlapping Cinema Tickets

"Invalid code," the usher said, tapping the glass screen of his scanner.

The harsh red glare illuminated my knuckles.

"Try it again," I told him, holding my device steady under the bright fluorescent lights of the cinema lobby. "My husband bought this for me. VIP seating for The Odyssey. Row F, Seat 12."

The young man in the maroon uniform sighed. Another sharp beep. Another red flash.

"Sorry, ma'am. The system doesn't lie," he said, handing the scanner back toward me. "A blonde lady scanned this exact barcode ten minutes ago. It's a duplicate ticket."

My throat tightened. Two months ago, I had found the cherry-red lipstick smeared deep into the fibers of Dean's collar. I packed my bags that very night and moved into a cheap hotel. Yet, exactly one week ago, Dean stood shivering in a freezing downpour outside my new apartment building. He clutched a dozen soaked roses to his chest, water dripping from his nose, swearing on his life he had cut off all outside temptations.

"I'm a changed man, Natalie," he had cried in the rain. "Give me one last chance."

I pocketed my phone. The reconciliation had been another lie.

"Which theater?" I asked, my voice steady.

"Theater two, down the hall to the left," the usher replied, pointing toward the dark corridor.

I didn't argue with the teenage worker. I didn't march to the box office to demand a refund. I simply turned on my heel and walked straight down the carpeted hallway. Bass from the theaters vibrated through the corridor.

I pushed open the heavy, soundproof door of Theater 2. The air conditioning blasted against my face. The opening trailers washed the premium stadium seating in a flickering, icy blue light.

I scanned the rows. It didn't take long to find him.

Row F. Center aisle.

Dean leaned across the wide console separating the luxury recliners. His lips pressed softly against a blonde woman's cheek. His right hand rested intimately over the visible, tight curve of her stomach.

I marched up the carpeted steps. My shadow fell over them.

Dean lifted his head. Our eyes met.

The color drained from his face instantly. He yanked his hand away from the woman's belly as if the fabric of her dress had burned his skin. He jerked backward and knocked a bucket of popcorn onto the floor.

"Dean?" the blonde woman asked, turning her head. She blinked in the dim light. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing, Brooke," Dean stammered. His voice cracked, high and thin. He shot up from his chair, blocking my view of her. "Natalie. What are you doing here?"

Brooke frowned, shifting her weight in the plush chair. "Who is she?"

Dean swallowed hard. His Adam's apple bobbed wildly. "She's... she's my ex-wife."

My jaw clenched.

"The one I told you about," Dean continued, rushing the words out. He pointed a trembling finger at me. "We're processing the divorce right now. She's emotionally unstable. Please, just ignore her."

A cold laugh escaped my throat.

I stepped around him, forcing myself right into their row. The space was tight. My knee brushed against Dean's slacks.

"Emotionally unstable?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "Is that why you stood in the freezing rain outside my apartment last Tuesday? Begging me to take you back?"

"Shut up, Natalie!" Dean hissed, his eyes darting toward the other patrons.

"Take out your phone, Brooke," I commanded, ignoring him.

Brooke pulled back, resting a protective hand over her bump. "Why should I listen to you?"

"Because you're carrying a child for a man who lies every time he opens his mouth," I said, keeping my tone even. "Open your text messages with him."

Dean lunged forward, grabbing my wrist. "Natalie, stop! Don't do this here. People are trying to watch the movie."

I shoved his arm off me. "Show me the text he sent you at three o'clock yesterday afternoon."

Brooke hesitated. The sheer panic radiating from Dean's pale, sweating face made her reach into her designer handbag. She pulled out her phone and unlocked the screen.

I held mine up right beside hers. The bright screens illuminated the dark space between us.

Two identical blocks of text.

"Can't wait to spoil my favorite girl tonight. VIP seats for The Odyssey. Wear something pretty."

Even the wine glass and winking emojis were exactly the same. He had copied and pasted the message.

Brooke stared at my screen. Her mouth parted in horror.

"You sent her the same message?" Brooke whispered, looking up at Dean. Her eyes watered, the mascara clumping at her lashes. "You gave her my ticket?"

"It was a mistake!" Dean pleaded, holding his hands up. "Brooke, baby, listen to me. My assistant messed up the reservations. She sent the wrong code to the wrong person."

"Your assistant?" I mocked. "The same assistant you fired last month?"

Brooke's face flushed a deep, angry red. She unclasped her handbag again, her fingers trembling violently. She pulled out a folded piece of glossy paper and slapped it hard against Dean's chest. It fluttered to the popcorn-covered floor.

An ultrasound scan.

"You told me the divorce was finalized months ago!" Brooke yelled, ignoring the trailers booming from the speakers. "You swore to me that this baby was going to have a proper family!"

"I am finalizing it!" Dean insisted, grabbing her shoulders. "The lawyers are just slow. Please, Brooke, calm down. Think of the baby."

"Don't you dare talk about my baby!" Brooke shoved him backward. He stumbled, hitting the back of the seat in front of him.

"Hey, take the drama outside!" the man shouted. "Some of us are trying to watch the trailers!"

Sweat shone on Dean's forehead as he tried to herd us toward the aisle.

"Keep your voices down, please," Dean begged, his voice dropping to a pathetic whisper. "Can we just sit down? I paid a fortune for these VIP tickets. Two hundred dollars each. We can talk about this after the movie."

"Talk about it after the movie?" Brooke shrieked. She grabbed her purse, ready to swing it at him. "You want me to sit here and eat popcorn while your wife stands right there?"

"Ex-wife!" Dean corrected quickly. "Almost ex-wife!"

"Not yet," I chimed in, crossing my arms over my chest. "The ink isn't even on the paper."

"Brooke, please. Just sit down. Let's just watch the film and I'll explain everything later."

The rage I had carried for two months settled into something colder and more useful.

I looked at the empty luxury recliner separating them. Seat 13.

I pulled down the leather seat cushion.

"Natalie, what the hell are you doing?" Dean hissed, panic twisting his features.

I adjusted my coat, stepped over his legs, and sat down firmly right between my cheating husband and his pregnant mistress.

I reached into my purse and pulled out the unsigned divorce settlement, dropping the thick stack of legal papers directly onto the shared armrest.

"Play the movie," I said, tapping the clause awarding me seventy percent of Dean's ownership stake if documented infidelity triggered the prenup.
