Chapter 1 of After Husband and Best Friend Cheated On Me, I Switched Our Daughters

I worked as a waitress in a small-town diner, but I put my husband Tom through Harvard Law School.

But after he graduated, when I was eight months pregnant, he divorced with me and married my best friend, Sarah.

On their wedding day, I didn't cry or make a scene. Instead, I went to work as their housekeeper.

Tom thought my love made me easy to control. Sarah treated me like dirt, thinking I was born to serve.

I never complained – I just prepared a surprise for them.

But when their daughter was admitted to Harvard, they opened the surprise and went crazy.

1

It was nearly dinner time when Sarah came to inspect the kitchen where I was preparing her family's meal.

I had been their housekeeper for eight years now, ever since she married Tom - my ex-husband.

She always found reasons to check on me while I worked.

Sometimes she'd claim she was reviewing the menu. Other times she'd say she needed to ensure I wasn't stealing food.

She'd even burst into my servant's quarters at midnight once, accusing me of sneaking calls to Tom.

Tom found her behavior amusing. “There is nothing to worry about.” He said “She is nothing to me.”

She'd insisted I live in the small room off the kitchen with my daughter, not the guest house like the previous housekeeper.

"Keep the trash where it belongs," she'd sneered.

I never complained. I just kept my head down and continued chopping vegetables.

There she stood in her designer silk robe, scrutinizing my work.

Behind her stumbled a thin, bruised little girl struggling with heavy cleaning supplies.

My daughter.

When she was born, Sarah had insisted on naming her "Mistake" – her idea of a joke.

The child's stomach growled audibly as she tried to balance the cleaning supplies.

Her eyes darted to the trash can where Grace's half-eaten breakfast lay discarded - eggs benedict and fresh croissants.

Sarah had made it clear that was all Mistake would get to eat today.

I continued chopping vegetables, my face a blank mask as I watched my daughter's hunger.

"Grace, my precious!" Sarah's voice turned syrupy sweet as her daughter Grace entered. "Mommy made your favorite cookies for tomorrow!"

The beautiful eight-year-old twirled into the kitchen in her designer dress.

Sarah had always lavished Grace with endless love and attention.

Now she was hand-feeding her cookies, cooing about tomorrow's extravagant birthday party.

Crumbs fell to the floor where Mistake would later be forced to eat them.

Grace gave her a perfect smile, trained from birth to perform. "These are delicious, Mother! You're the best baker ever! Can we have a pony at the party?"

Sarah preened at the praise, stroking Grace's hair. "Of course, my love. Anything for you."

"That's my angel! Unlike that worthless bastard," she spat, glaring at my daughter. "Just like her whore mother."

"And you!" She turned on me, voice dripping venom. "Those vegetables are wrong. Too thick, like your stupid head. Do them again, you worthless slut."

I silently started over, each cut precise and careful.

My eyes remained fixed on the cutting board as Sarah forced Mistake to gather Grace's discarded cookie crumbs from the floor with her mouth.

"I don't know why Tom lets you stay. Though I suppose even a whore can clean toilets."

Her voice turned sugary again, the switch instant and jarring. "Grace, darling, let's plan your party. Only the finest for my perfect little princess!

“Should we hire the Royal Ballet to perform?"

Suddenly, Sarah's eyes narrowed at my daughter, who had dropped some cleaning supplies.

"Can't even carry supplies right! Probably as stupid as your mother."

"This is what happens when trash breeds," she told Grace. "That's why Daddy was smart enough to leave her for me."

With that, Sarah shoved my daughter hard against the marble counter edge. There was a sickening thud as her head hit the corner.

I watched through dead eyes, my knife never pausing in its rhythm against the cutting board. Each slice precise, mechanical, like counting down the years.

2

Blood trickled down my daughter's pale face. She crumpled to the floor, trembling.

The crimson drops stained her ragged dress - one of Grace's cast-offs that Sarah had deliberately torn further before forcing Mistake to wear it.

The jagged edges exposed bruises both old and new.

Grace stared wide-eyed at the scene, her cookie frozen halfway to her mouth. Her perfect party dress seemed to mock Mistake's rags.

Sarah just laughed. "Look at you, crying like the pathetic little mistake you are."

But my daughter stopped crying. She just pulled herself up shakily, like she'd done countless times before. Her thin arms trembled with the effort.

With practiced movements, she tried to wipe away the blood trickling down her face. Her fingers left scarlet smears across her pale cheeks.

Through trembling lips, she whispered, "I'm sorry, Madam. I'll do better. Please forgive me."

Apologizing after being hurt - it was a daily ritual for my daughter in this house. Every blow came with a required apology.

Sarah's eyes fell on Grace's half-eaten breakfast still on the table - fresh croissants, eggs benedict, imported jam. A cruel smile curved her lips.

"You want breakfast, little rat?" She grabbed my daughter by the hair. "Fine. Eat."

She forced Mistake's face down into the garbage can where Grace's previous meals lay rotting. "That's where trash belongs - eating trash."

I continued wiping the counter, my movements precise and mechanical. My face remained expressionless as I watched my daughter gag and choke.

Tom finally looked up from his newspaper at the commotion.

He sighed and reached for the first aid kit, as if this was just another minor inconvenience in his day.

"Sarah, dear," he said mildly while dabbing at our daughter's wound, "Maybe you shouldn't be quite so rough with the child. The neighbors might hear."

Sarah sneered, her perfectly painted lips curling in disgust. "Why not? She's nothing but a worthless mistake. Just like her mother."

"Look at her - wearing Grace's ruined clothes like the pathetic beggar she is. She's lucky I let her have anything at all."

Then Sarah turned back to Grace, her face instantly transforming into a loving smile, the switch so jarring it made my stomach turn:

"Sweetie, Mommy ordered that Disney princess castle cake you wanted for tomorrow's birthday! The one with the light-up towers and real sugar flowers! It cost a fortune, but only the best for my perfect angel!"

"Thank you, Mother," Grace replied politely, used to her mother's dramatic mood swings.

Seeing this, my daughter gathered what little courage she had left and spoke in a voice barely above a whisper:

"Madam... since it's my birthday too tomorrow... could I maybe have something fresh to eat? Just this once?"

I watched through dead eyes as Sarah's face contorted with rage.

"You ungrateful little bitch!" she screamed. "You think you deserve fresh food? After I generously let you eat what Grace doesn't want?"

"You ungrateful little bitch!" Sarah exploded, her face contorting with rage.

She grabbed my daughter by the hair and started hitting her, each slap punctuated with insults. Her rings left cuts across my daughter's cheeks.

"Worthless! Stupid! Just like your mother!"

Screams and sobs filled the kitchen. The sound of flesh hitting flesh echoed off the expensive tiles.

I watched silently, my face blank as stone. Inside, I imagined wrapping my hands around Sarah's throat.

Tom made a few weak attempts to intervene, more concerned about the noise than the violence. Even Grace tugged at her mother's sleeve, begging her to stop.

Finally, worried that Grace was getting upset, Sarah dragged my sobbing daughter out by the arm, leaving bloody fingerprints on the doorframe.

The next morning was Grace's birthday party. The house was decorated like a fairy tale castle.

Sarah got up early, laden with presents and the elaborate cake. Her designer dress probably cost more than I made in a year.

"Get on your knees," she ordered me. "You'll serve Grace's cake like the servant you are."

I knelt on the hard floor, holding the silver cake server, while Sarah cooed over Grace in her new party dress.

Tom frowned at the empty doorway behind her, finally noticing something was missing.

"Where's Mistake?" he asked, glancing up from his phone. "It's her birthday too, isn't it?"

Sarah waved her hand dismissively, adjusting Grace's silk bow.

"Oh, that little brat? I broke her leg last night. Taught her a lesson about asking for things she doesn't deserve."

She smiled brightly, straightening the cake's sugar flowers. "She's still unconscious in the basement!"

I held the cake server steady, my grip never wavering.

3

Sarah delivered her news with a smile, her red lips curling up at the corners as if breaking my daughter's leg was something to be proud of.

Ignoring Tom's horrified stare, she bustled past him into the living room, her designer heels clicking on the marble floor.

She arranged the mountain of presents and three-tiered cake in front of Grace with exaggerated care. Each gift was wrapped in custom paper with real gold ribbons.

"Sweetheart, it's your special day!" She adjusted Grace's silk party dress.

"Mommy won't let anything spoil it - especially not that little mistake. She can spend her birthday thinking about how worthless she is."

As Grace reached for a present, Sarah noticed a small cut on her hand. Her face instantly darkened like a storm cloud.

She rounded on me, fury in her eyes. Her perfectly manicured nails dug into my arm. "What did you do to my precious Grace? How dare you let her get hurt! I'll have you fired for this!"

I kept my face expressionless. "Children get hurt sometimes. Mistake is covered in bruises every day."

Sarah's face turned purple with rage. Her voice rose to a shriek. "How dare you compare that worthless brat to Grace! "

She caught herself mid-scream, suddenly aware of how she sounded in front of the birthday guests. A few of Tom's law partners were staring.

Taking a deep breath, she smoothed her silk dress and continued in a syrupy voice,

"What I mean is, Grace is delicate, refined! Not like that rough little mistake. You need to watch her more carefully!"

Tom scoffed from his leather armchair, barely looking up from his phone. "If you hadn't splattered blood all over our kitchen yesterday beating Mistake, Grace wouldn't have tried cleaning it up and cut herself."

Sarah whirled to face Grace, her jewelry jangling. "Baby, is that true? Did you try to clean that filth?"

Grace nodded solemnly, her golden curls bouncing. "I wanted to help clean up the mess, Mother. There was so much blood..."

Sarah's face crumpled in exaggerated concern. She pulled Grace into a suffocating hug.

"Oh darling, you're too precious for cleaning! That's what we have servants for. That's why we keep trash like her around."

She jerked her head toward me, sneering.

"Your only job in this house is to be our perfect little princess, understand? Leave the dirty work to dirty people."

With that, she threw herself into party preparations, determined to erase the unpleasant moment.

She insisted on cooking the meal herself, though she'd never cooked before Grace was born. Every dish was Instagram-perfect.

She decorated every inch of the house with imported flowers and crystal arrangements. The party looked like something out of a magazine.

All while Mistake lay unconscious in the basement, her arm twisted at an unnatural angle.

After the cake and presents, Sarah hugged Grace close, breathing in her expensive French perfume. "Tell Mommy your birthday wish, angel. Whatever it is, I'll make it come true!"

Grace didn't hesitate. Her blue eyes sparkled. "I want to go to Harvard! Just like Daddy!"

Sarah stroked her hair proudly, shooting me a triumphant look. "Well, Mommy can't guarantee that, but with your brilliance, you'll definitely get in!"

"And when you do, I'll have the most amazing surprise for you!"

I watched her shower Grace with adoration, my lips curving in the smallest smile.

A life-changing surprise, Sarah?

Don't worry.

I have one planned for you too.

Every year, Grace's birthday celebrations grew more extravagant. Designer dresses, imported cakes, endless gifts.

While Mistake wasn’t allowed to appear in public since Sarah broke her leg. She lived in the basement, forgotten.

Whenever Tom asked about her, Sarah would sneer, "Don't mention that worthless mistake. She makes me sick."

Ten years later, Grace got her Harvard acceptance letter.

Sarah had donated $10 million to ensure her place - money that even made Tom wince.

The Harvard acceptance celebration filled the mansion's grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above tables laden with champagne and caviar.

Sarah had spared no expense. Even the waiters wore custom uniforms.

I watched her showing off Grace's acceptance letter like a trophy. "Harvard's newest legacy!" she bragged to her society friends.

I brought Sarah’s limping daughter upstairs.

I had waited eighteen years for this moment.

"Sarah," I called out across the ballroom. "There's something you should know about Grace and Mistake."

Sarah turned from where she was showing off Grace's acceptance letter.

"Grace isn't your daughter," I said clearly. "She's mine."
