Chapter 1 of My Husband Chose His First Love, So Our Son Chose His Rival

I spent six years telling my son that his father loved him.

Every canceled birthday, every missed baseball game, every empty seat beside us had an excuse.

Daddy was working.

Daddy was building our future.

Daddy would make it up next time.

Then our six-year-old opened the family location app on his tablet.

His father wasn't at the office.

He was across town with another woman.

Leo stared at the screen for a long time before whispering, “Mommy, did Daddy lie to me too?”

Two days later, my husband made me cry in front of our son.

Leo walked silently to his desk, opened his school notebook, and crossed out his father's last name.

“I'm divorcing Daddy too.”

So I finally left.

My husband thought I'd come crawling back.

Instead, I returned as the Bennett heiress.

And when Leo met his father's billionaire rival, he asked one devastating question.

“Can I use your last name instead?”

CLAIRE'S POV

"Two fingers right across the seam, Mommy," Leo said, holding up his brand-new leather baseball glove. "That's how Daddy said you hold the ball for a straight throw. He practiced the grip on a rolled-up sock yesterday."

I smiled as I zipped the side pocket of his duffel bag. "Did he now? You sound like a major leaguer already."

"He promised today's the day," Leo said, beaming. He carefully tucked the glove into the top of his backpack next to his flashlight and trail mix. "He said the campsite by the river has the best open field for throwing."

Almost everything was packed. Three sleeping bags waited by the front door, the cooler was loaded with marinated chicken and juice boxes, and our hiking boots were lined up on the mat. We were supposed to hit the highway by nine to beat the weekend traffic.

Then my phone vibrated on the kitchen counter.

Ethan's contact photo flashed across the screen. I answered on speaker while tightening the straps on Leo's pack.

"Hey, honey," I said. "Are you almost home? The car is almost packed."

"Claire, listen," Ethan's voice came through, strained and breathless. "I'm so sorry. A client server went down twenty minutes ago, and our operations director needs me downtown. I have to manage the failover."

My hands went still on the nylon strap. "Ethan, we planned this camping trip three weeks ago. You took Friday off."

"I know, I know! Do you think I want to be stuck in a windowless server room all weekend?" He let out a harsh sigh. "It's out of my hands. If Hayes Software loses that client's data, the whole company takes the fall. I have to stay."

Leo looked up from the floor, his brown eyes searching my face. The bright grin had vanished, replaced by a quiet, shrinking stillness.

"When will you be done?" I asked, keeping my voice steady.

"Not until tomorrow evening at the earliest," Ethan said. "Look, go without me, or let's reschedule for next weekend. I promise I'll make it up to you both. I really have to run. The operations team is waiting. Love you guys."

The line went dead.

I stared at the black screen for a long second before crouching down in front of my seven-year-old son.

"Leo," I began gently.

"It's okay, Mommy," Leo interrupted quickly, forcing a small, tight smile. He reached out and patted my arm, mimicking the way Ethan sometimes comforted me. "Daddy works hard because he loves us. He has to save the computers."

Hearing those words from a boy who had spent all week counting down the hours broke something inside my chest.

"We can still set up the tent in the backyard," I offered softly.

"Can we go give Daddy his card first?" Leo asked. He reached into the front pouch of his bag and pulled out a sheet of heavy construction paper. He had spent two hours the previous night drawing Ethan standing on a pitcher's mound, surrounded by gold glitter glue that spelled out *Best Dad*. "If he has to work all day, he might be sad."

"He's probably in a secure room, sweetie," I said. "I don't think we can just walk in."

"We can leave it at his front desk," Leo insisted, already grabbing the family tablet from the charging dock. "I'll check how far the office is."

Leo opened the tablet and tapped the family locator app we had set up for emergencies. He knew how to read the little green icons.

He stared at the screen, his small brow furrowing. "Mommy? Is the map broken?"

"What do you mean?"

"Daddy's icon isn't downtown," Leo said, turning the screen toward me. "It says he's forty miles away."

I took the tablet from his hands.

The pulsing green dot marked *Ethan's Phone* wasn't anywhere near the corporate financial district. It was pinned directly over Pinecrest Lakeside Resort, an upscale luxury hotel and spa perched on the northern shore of the county reservoir.

A cold weight dropped into my stomach. "Maybe the GPS glitched," I murmured, though my fingers were already trembling as I refreshed the app.

The dot stayed firmly on the resort's private marina.

"Let's go check," I said, my voice flatter than I intended.

"To the office?" Leo asked.

"No," I said, grabbing my car keys. "To the lake."

The forty-minute drive was suffocating. Leo sat in the backseat clutching his drawing against his chest, his eyes darting between the passing pine trees and my rearview mirror. I kept telling myself there had to be an explanation: a corporate retreat, an off-site conference, anything that didn't shatter the life we had built.

We pulled into the winding cobblestone entrance of Pinecrest Resort just before ten. The parking lot was filled with luxury sedans and valet attendants.

I spotted Ethan's black Audi parked near the VIP boardwalk entrance.

"There's Daddy's car!" Leo pointed, excitement momentarily flashing across his face. "He is here!"

"Stay in the car for a minute, Leo," I said, putting the gear in park near the curb.

Before I could unbuckle my seatbelt, the resort's double glass doors opened.

Ethan walked out into the crisp morning sunlight. He wasn't wearing his suit or the wrinkled work shirt he wore during system emergencies. He wore a light jacket over his favorite dark green sweater and casual jeans.

Right beside him was Serena, his college sweetheart. His first love. She had returned six months ago as a marketing consultant for his firm, and he had insisted that was all she was now.

Ethan walked around to the passenger side of an unfamiliar convertible and opened the door for her. The autumn breeze caught Serena's cream scarf, blowing it across her face. Ethan laughed, reached out with both hands, and gently smoothed the fabric back over her shoulders, his fingers lingering on the curve of her neck.

In the backseat, I heard a sharp intake of air.

"Mommy..." Leo whispered.

I turned around. Leo was pressed entirely against the car door, his small hands plastered against the tinted glass, staring straight at his father.

Then Ethan pulled something from his jacket pocket.

It was the white Rawlings baseball Ethan had brought home on Tuesday for Leo's first lesson. Even from the car, I could see the blue star Leo had drawn beside the logo.

Instead of getting into the convertible, Serena pointed toward a throwing booth beside the boardwalk entrance. Ethan followed her, held out the ball with a grin, and curled her fingers around it. His hand covered hers as he guided her arm toward the wooden target.

He was teaching her the grip.

"He gave her my ball," Leo said. His voice didn't crack. It was completely hollow, stripped of every ounce of childish warmth. "That was my ball."

My heart felt like it was tearing down the center. I checked the mirror, pulled away from the curb, and kept both hands tight on the wheel. I would not let Leo watch another second of this.

"Leo, don't look," I choked out, tears finally burning the rims of my eyes. "Don't look back."

The entire drive home was dead silence. Leo didn't cry. He didn't ask questions. He simply stared down at his knees, his knuckles white around the edges of the construction paper.

When we stepped back into our quiet living room, the packed camping duffels still sat by the entryway, bright and full of promised adventures that would never happen.

Leo set his backpack on the floor and laid the drawing he had held all the way home on the kitchen island.

He smoothed the paper once with his palm. He looked at the gold-glitter letters that read *Best Dad*, then took the paper with both hands and folded it firmly in half, creasing the edge until the glitter cracked.

He looked up at me, his eyes wide and completely empty.

"Mommy..." Leo whispered. "Daddy didn't just lie to you, did he? He lied to me too."

I stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen, looking at my son, and for the first time in seven years, I couldn't find a single lie to protect his father.
