Chapter 1 of My Husband Chose His Ex’s Kids Over Me and Ours

Zara's POV

"Trevor, I want a divorce. I'm going to find my daughter. From now on, I want nothing to do with your family!"

Today marks three years since I uncovered solid proof of Trevor's affair.

It has been three years since our daughter, Katie, disappeared.

And today, I finally learned the truth.

Trevor let her go missing on purpose because his first love, Brianna Smith, had given birth to his child. Every time he claimed he was out searching for our daughter, he was actually with that woman and that child.

All this time, I'd been in the dark.

In the first year, I found a nude photo of an unknown woman on his phone. He brushed it off and called it spam.

In the second year, on our daughter's birthday, he stumbled home drunk, lipstick smeared across his chest. He said he missed her too much, so he couldn't stop drinking.

Now, this is the third year. And it's not just a betrayal. It's a full-blown conspiracy.

Even Trevor's mother, Yvonne Gibson, who used to dote on our daughter, knew the truth. She hid everything from me for the sake of the Gibson family line.

I was shattered and completely devastated.

Still reeling, the same unknown number called again.

This time, I picked up.

"I'll come get you in seven days. Leave the Gibsons for good."

I agreed without hesitation.

Just then, the front door opened. Trevor walked in with his first love and their two children: a toddler and a newborn.

His mother looked delighted at the sight of her 'real' grandchildren.

Yvonne quickly looked at me and said dismissively, "Zara, we haven't mistreated you all these years. Helping raise these two kids isn't such a big deal, am I right?"

I couldn't respond. How could I?

With Trevor and his mother pressuring me, I had no one to turn to. The growing anger inside me became too much to bear.

I stared at Trevor, cold and aloof.

As my eyes burned with tears, I fell to my knees.

A crack formed in my voice as I sobbed. "Katie's still alive, isn't she? Please, just give me back my daughter!"

“I have no idea where she is,” he snapped. “It’s been three years, Zara. For all I know, she could be dead.”

He looked me up and down with a smirk, his voice icy. “Nicole and Caden are the real heirs to the Gibson name. Brianna gave me a son. She’s the one who belongs here, raising them.”

I forced myself to stand, fists trembling, wiping my tears with defiance. So this marriage, our marriage, and all the years we've shared have been nothing but a lie.

"Trevor, from now on… we're done. You don't owe me, and I don't owe you."

...

When I told my mom I was determined to get a divorce, she stood up and slapped me hard across the face.

"Go apologize to Trevor right now! What's all this nonsense about getting a divorce?!"

She was trembling, her voice sharp with panic. "Your father died in a car crash while searching for Katie. On his deathbed, he made you promise you'd stay with Trevor and live a good life. Don't make a scene now!"

I crumpled to the floor, limp from the blow, and shouted back, "I'm not crazy! Katie is my daughter! As soon as I find her, I'm divorcing him!"

Three years ago, after Katie vanished, my father ignored our pleas and ran out into a storm to search for her. He came back empty-handed and was hit by a car on the way home.

The scene was a mess. Surveillance in the area was down for repairs, and the driver fled.

Eventually, the case went cold.

After his death, we received a large insurance payout, but the Langford Group was left leaderless. To maintain stability, my mom transferred the company to my adopted brother, Ethan Langford.

And so, despite my mom's protests, I stormed back to the Gibson residence to demand a divorce.

But the moment I opened the door, I walked into a scene that made my blood freeze.

Two children—Trevor's children—sat in the living room. The girl, Nicole, looked about three, and the boy, Caden, was still a baby.

Trevor held them as if they came naturally.

His eyes were full of warmth… the kind he never showed Katie.

Behind him, the woman spoke softly. "Since the kids are back home, I'll get going. I don't want Zara to feel uncomfortable."

It was Brianna—his first love.

Even after giving birth, she was still stunning and slim

She furrowed her brows slightly, pretending she was reluctant to leave.

However, Trevor and his mother rushed to stop her.

"These kids are part of the family. They're mine. Of course, you're staying. Don't worry, Brianna. No one's going to touch you."

Trevor's voice held a confidence that made my skin crawl.

Brianna smiled, smug.

She looked straight at me, lifted her voice just a little louder, and asked, "Am I sleeping in the master bedroom tonight?"

She leaned playfully against Trevor's back.

"Of course," he said. "You're the lady of this house now."

Trevor gently packed her things, one hand wrapped around her waist.

Her every move mirrored mine. I'd always heard Trevor never got over his first love, but I never expected we'd look this alike. I stood frozen, watching the cozy little scene play out like I was already a ghost.

"Such lovely children," Yvonne beamed.

I couldn't take it anymore. I cleared my throat loudly.

Only then did the three of them notice me.

"Oh, good, you're back. Come meet the kids! You'll be taking care of them from now on," Yvonne said, all smiles.

"No. I'm here to talk about the divorce," I said flatly, my eyes locked on Trevor.

"Forget it. I'm not agreeing to a divorce." His eyes were sharp as he continued, "Everyone knows that our families are tied through marriage. If you leave now, how do you think that's going to look?"

Back then, the Gibson family had invested $3 million in a Langford Group project as a wedding gift. That investment helped take the company public. From the outside, our alliance looked unbreakable.

"Brianna said she's fine raising the kids with you," Trevor added. "She's so understanding. I don't want her to suffer anymore."

He didn't even look at me. Instead, Trevor handed the baby to me and pulled Brianna into his arms.

My heart seized. Tears fell across my cheeks, landing on the baby's face, but they acted as if I weren't even there.

"You expect me to raise your illegitimate kids and live under the same roof as your mistress?" I spat.

Trevor's face went cold. "Who said Nicole and Caden are illegitimate?"

He stepped closer, towering over me.

Outside, the storm surged, thunder cracked, and wind howled.

The kids began crying.

Yvonne scooped them up, annoyed. "Why can't you even calm a baby?"

A loud thunderclap made Brianna flinch. Behind her, the family portrait crashed to the ground.

Glass shattered. A sharp piece cut her arm.

Trevor rushed to her side, cradling her, wiping her tears, and barking at the servant to clean it up.

"I scratched the photo... I-I'm sorry! Is it okay?" she asked in a soft, trembling voice.

With eyes so soft, Trevor assured her, "It's fine. Doesn't matter. We'll take a new one tomorrow with the kids."

Then, he gently bandaged her wound.

That photo used to show Trevor, Katie, and me holding hands and smiling. Now, it lies shattered in the trash.

I bit my lip until I tasted blood.

Lightning flashed again. I lost my balance and stumbled.

In three years of marriage, he never once noticed that I was terrified of storms. Not once. But now, all he cared about was her trembling.

"Move. You're in the way," Trevor said, brushing past me. "Forget the divorce. Tomorrow, Brianna and I are taking a new family portrait. You're coming too. The baby needs someone to look after."

Then he picked her up and carried her into the master bedroom.

Her things were already there.

I tried to keep my composure and asked his mother about the baby's origins, but she dodged the question.

I looked down at the sleeping infant. Something about her reminded me of Katie.

Outside, the storm wailed. And somehow, I heard a voice.

"It's Katie!"

I bolted out the door like I'd lost my mind.

Rain blurred my eyes. Thunder cracked above me. I stumbled and collapsed into the mud.

Right then, my mom arrived, shielding me with an umbrella.

"I heard it too," she said breathlessly. "I was already on my way to the Gibson house. I… I acted on impulse. I'm sorry."

She held my hand tightly. "If you want a divorce, then do it. Ethan said he'll handle the Gibson family. I support you."

We searched together for over an hour. My mom never left my side and was afraid I might end up like my father.

Hands shaking, I wiped the rain from my phone and dialed Trevor. Again. And again.

No answer.

Just as I was about to give up, the phone lit up.

He was calling back.

"I just heard Katie's voice. Where is she?!" I cried.

His voice came through, lazy and unbothered. "Since you're already out, grab some diapers for the baby. And a silk nightgown. Brianna says your clothes are too rough. She tossed them."

Then he hung up.

Thunder split the sky.

I stood frozen, my hands trembling and my heart breaking apart.

Through the tears, I made one last call.

"No problem," came a low, magnetic voice. "But you'll owe me a favor."

"I know."

Everything went black.

I collapsed from exhaustion.

As the world disappeared, I could still hear my mom's voice calling out for me in the pouring rain.
