Chapter 5
I was so angry that my head was dizzy. I couldn't wait to reveal the truth right now. I sneered, "Valery, if it were you who had cancer, could you accept what you planned to do to me?"
Valery spat a few times. "Who do you think you are to curse me? You got cancer yourself. It's a punishment for you. You're such an unlucky person. Your parents died because of you, and now it's your turn. You deserve it. I am such a kind person. How could I possibly get cancer?
"You are not standing on the moral high ground. Haven't you heard that in times of trouble, each one looks out for himself? I just did what anyone would do!
"If I had cancer, I would not burden my family, because it's my fate. You are fighting against fate and the Grim Reaper by treating cancer, not to mention that you want to harm me!"
In times of trouble, each one looked out for himself. I didn't argue with her, because I knew very well that the harsher she spoke at the moment, the more painful she would be when she learned the truth!
After hearing Valery's words, Jarrett seemed to feel proud. Maybe in his eyes, as his sister, Valery should have the spirit of dedication and sacrifice. But he still knew how to say nice things. "You don't need to worry about this. If Valery has any diseases, I will use all my family's assets to treat her to extend her life even if she doesn't want to. Even if it means giving my liver and kidneys, I won't even hesitate."
It sounded touching.
Last year, Valery had a minor surgery and stayed in the hospital for two days. Jarrett didn't even make a phone call until he knew that Valery had recovered and returned home. He came later to have a meal. I didn't believe that someone like him would be willing to spend money to treat Valery's cancer.
Chapter 6
Thinking of this, I didn't hesitate anymore. "Okay, let's get divorced. Anyway, we don't have any property to divide."
Jarrett said arrogantly, "The house, the car, and the savings must all be divided equally. Do you expect Valery to leave with nothing?"
Then I realized why so many people were here. It turned out that they were here for my money. I was not in a panic. Instead, I smiled and sat on the sofa. "Then let's not get divorced. I will still sell the house and take out a loan to treat the illness. At that time, you can wait to share the debt with me."
Several people discussed it at once, saying that they would sue me in court and file for divorce, and then they said they would cause trouble at my workplace, making me unpeaceful in my life.
I still smiled and said, "You won't get any benefits by suing for divorce in court, let alone if I don't agree, you can't get divorced. Even if you did, these properties are all mine before marriage and cannot be given to Valery."
I paused and said, "As for causing trouble at my workplace, I don't care about it. I have cancer and I'm dying. Do you think that I'll still care about my dignity and reputation? It's best if you just make me popular on the internet. Maybe I can crowdfund for medical treatment!"
They whispered for a while and finally said they wanted 40 thousand dollars. As long as I gave them the money, we could get a peaceful divorce and become strangers in the future. I calculated it myself. The house and car were bought by me before marriage, but the income after marriage needed to be divided equally. My annual salary was about 90 thousand dollars. If we went to court, the court would probably support giving them 40 thousand dollars.
I thought, Forget it. Just spend the money to buy some peace. Otherwise, if we can't get divorced, I will have to spend at least one million dollars to treat Valery's illness.
They were afraid that I would change my mind, so they took me directly to the Family Court. Valery and I went through the procedures quickly, and everything would be done after one month.
Valery took the divorce receipt and looked at me coldly, saying, "Don't play any tricks on me in a month. Otherwise, even if cancer doesn't let you die, I won't let you live!"
I just nodded and didn't say anything.
Chapter 7
A month passed quickly. Valery had taken everything from the house. She took away all the bags and jewelry I bought for her and even took the hairdryer. If it weren't for the other appliances being purchased before marriage, she would probably have called a moving company to take them away.
Most of these things were sold at a discounted price by Jarrett, and the money was taken by Jarrett. But Valery was happy to accept it.
Just after finishing all the procedures and getting divorced from the Family Court, I walked to the parking lot and saw Valery appear in front of my car, holding hands with a man intimately. The man glanced at me, smiled, and handed me a cigarette, saying, "Hello, do you want a cigarette? I am Valery's current boyfriend. I heard that you are dying soon. That's great. Thank you for leaving Valery to me."
I thought self-mockingly that it was fortunate that I had lied out of goodwill, otherwise, not only would I have spent money on Valery's medical treatment, but I would also have been cheated on.
Valery glanced at me and said, "You look good. I was worried that you would die so soon. It's a pity that you are stingy and don't give me a chance to inherit your estate."
Seeing me staring at the man and ignoring her, Valery smiled and said, "I have known him for a long time. He is much better than you in many aspects. Jarrett has also tested him. He is an extraordinary man. After learning a lesson from you, I will take him for a medical examination before marriage."
The man patted his chest and said, "Valery, I am strong. Didn't you know it last night? Can a sick person have the strength that I have?"
Valery got shy and patted the man's chest. Seeing that I didn't react, Valery smiled mockingly and was about to speak when the phone rang. She immediately answered, "I got it. I'm busy now. I'll transfer it to you later."
It seemed that it was a call from Jarrett. I just transferred 40 thousand dollars to Valery, and Jarrett couldn't wait to get it.
