Chapter 3
The table went completely silent. Everyone slowly turned to look at Charlotte. They were now fully convinced she really had been reborn.
Charlotte lowered her head with a heavy sigh. "You can't change fate. Some things are meant to happen. All we can do is accept it."
After saying that, she looked straight at me. "Yelena, I think you, of all people, should understand that."
Caught off guard, I met her eyes. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Charlotte shot Levi a deliberately troubled look. "I know you've been waiting for Mr. Howard to promote you to lead attorney. But unfortunately, he thinks I'm the better fit. I get that you're upset. But some things are just destined."
Levi, who was still in a daze from everything that had happened, blinked like he had just woken up.
It was obvious he had never even thought about the promotion until Charlotte brought it up. But after those two dead-on predictions, he had complete trust in Charlotte.
He quickly said, "Yeah, you're absolutely right, Charlotte. I was going to offer you the position."
Then he turned to me. "You heard her, Yelena. Some things are meant to happen. You can't change fate."
I sneered inwardly and looked up at Charlotte.
"Ms. Lowell, I don't think you're just after the lead attorney position. What you really want are the cases I handle, which make up nearly half of the firm's entire caseload, am I right?"
Charlotte's expression shifted. She hadn't expected me to hit the nail on the head.
She immediately shot back in protest, "That's ridiculous. I'm a reborn woman with bigger things on my mind than your pile of case files. I'm just telling you what's coming."
"Is that so?"
Smiling, I locked eyes with her.
"Next, are you going to predict that I'll switch firms because you stole my position?"
Charlotte's face paled instantly at those words. She instinctively glanced over at Finley. Her panic at being exposed was plain as day.
She quickly composed herself and looked at me again. "Seems like you're blurting out your plan first because you're feeling guilty. Well, since you've already spilled the beans, I won't keep it a secret anymore.
"Mr. Howard, Yelena's been planning to jump ship to our biggest rival, Vera Legal. And that's not all. She's going to use our firm's resources to crush us. By that time, our whole firm will go bankrupt, and we'll all be out on the street!"
"Are you serious?"
Levi's gaze instantly turned cold. His eyes narrowed at me with a sharp edge of suspicion.
Charlotte shot a glance at Finley, who immediately caught on and stepped forward to help her "prove" her point.
"Yelena, so that offer letter in your inbox was from Vera Legal? And here I thought it was just spam and didn't give it a second glance. Looks like you were planning to betray our firm all along!"
Chapter 4
Finley was my boyfriend. That fact alone made Charlotte's accusation sound a whole lot more believable.
Everyone at the table immediately turned to look at me with eyes full of doubt. They started whispering among themselves.
"Damn, Charlotte's insane. She actually predicted Yelena would betray us? She might've just saved our lives. If the firm went under, we'd all be out of a job."
"I've got chills. Who would've thought Yelena was the sort to cook up schemes? She actually hid something like this from her boyfriend?"
"Exactly. If Charlotte hadn't been reborn, we'd all be collateral damage right now."
One comment after another. Just like in my past life, no one gave me the chance to explain a thing.
Levi's face turned thunderous. He slammed a hand down on the table and stood up.
"Yelena Swanson, I mentored you for years, gave you every chance, and this is how you repay me?"
Charlotte watched everyone's reaction with satisfaction, then walked over to Levi and said in her most innocent tone, "Sorry, Yelena. But with hundreds of people working at this firm, I had to tell the truth. I couldn't risk all their jobs just to protect you. Don't you agree?"
I looked at her smug face, at Finley, who played along with her, at Levi's cold stare, and at the hostile eyes of my colleagues. All I felt was a heavy wave of despair.
They got me killed in my past life. And now they wanted to do it all over again.
There was no way I'd allow that.
My hands clenched into fists as I stared straight at Finley.
"I never applied to Vera Legal. So there's no way I received an offer from them."
Charlotte let out a chuckle. "Oh, come on, Yelena. You're still trying to deny it? Finley saw it himself. Why are you even pretending anymore?
"Backstabbing your firm is the worst thing you can do in our profession. If Mr. Howard exposes what you've done, you'll never be able to practice again. I'd suggest you get on your knees and apologize to Mr. Howard. Maybe I'll even put in a good word for you."
Finley jumped in right after her, "Exactly. Don't wait until you're blacklisted and broke before you regret it. By then, no one's going to help you."
"Is that so?"
I let out a sneer and stepped forward before stopping right in front of Charlotte.
"You say you were reborn. Well, did your past life memories happen to mention that my laptop has a hidden surveillance system?"
Charlotte's expression faltered, and her smug smile disappeared. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, whoever used my laptop to send a résumé to Vera Legal and tried to backstab our firm would've been picked up by my laptop's surveillance system. Let me pull it up and show everyone the truth."
I gave her a chilling smile and pulled out my laptop, flipping it open right in front of Levi. Then, I hit play on the footage.
Within seconds, a clear figure appeared on screen. Everyone's expression shifted instantly as they whipped around to look.
