Chapter 1 of My Son Saved a Seat for My Husband's Mistress

Emma's POV

"Give me the ticket, Mom."

Noah snatched the IMAX stub right out of my fingers before I could hand it to the usher.

"Hey, careful," I said, reaching out to take it back.

He stepped out of my reach. My seventeen-year-old son planted both hands on my hips and shoved me backward. He steered me away from the velvet ropes, pushing me toward the crowded concession stand with surprising force.

"Noah, what are you doing?" I asked. I stumbled slightly, catching my balance against a plastic display case filled with candy. "The movie starts in two minutes."

"Just wait here," he demanded. His eyes darted nervously toward the neon-lit hallway leading to the auditoriums. "Dad needs a soda. I have to use the bathroom. Don't go in yet."

"I can get the soda. You go to the restroom, and I'll meet you both at our seats."

"No!" Noah yelled.

The sharp sound drew stares from a nearby family. A woman holding a toddler gave me a judgmental look.

Noah lowered his voice, his hands curling into fists at his sides. "Stay here for ten minutes. Exactly ten minutes. Don't come in before that."

"We're going to miss the opening scene," I argued. "Adrian has the other tickets. If I don't go in now, I won't be able to find you guys in the dark."

"Dad said to wait!" Noah snapped, cutting me off completely.

"Did something happen? Are you feeling sick?" I reached for his forehead, my mind instantly jumping to his asthma.

He slapped my hand away. "I'm fine! Just stay here!"

He didn't give me a chance to reply. He spun around and sprinted away.

"Noah, walk!" I called out.

My chest tightened, a strange unease settling over my ribs. He wasn't heading toward the restrooms on the left. He ran straight through the ticket checkpoint on the right, flashing his stub at the usher without looking back.

Why did he lie?

I bought a large popcorn, gripping the cardboard edges until the sides bowed inward. I checked my watch. Five minutes had passed.

I walked past the ticket taker and pushed open the heavy, soundproof doors of Theater 4. The pitch-black room echoed with the booming bass of the opening credits. I navigated the carpeted steps, keeping my eyes on the glowing letters attached to the end of each aisle.

Row G.

Eight years ago, I walked away from a senior partner track at a top-tier law firm. When Noah was nine, his severe asthma had required round-the-clock nebulizer treatments, emergency-room visits, and constant monitoring. I traded courtrooms for pediatric waiting rooms so he could breathe.

Now, I stood at the edge of our row, staring at my assigned center seat.

A woman I didn't recognize sat in it.

Adrian occupied the seat to her left. Noah sat on his father's other side.

I took a step forward. My shoe scuffed the sticky floor.

Noah turned his head.

He didn't jump. He didn't look guilty. Instead, my son leaned forward, shifting his shoulders to block my view of the woman beside his father.

My own son. The boy I sacrificed my career for was running interference for his father's mistress.

The screen flared white with a massive on-screen explosion, illuminating the row. I recognized her profile instantly. Vanessa. Adrian’s new executive assistant. She wore a silk camisole that dipped low, leaning entirely into my husband's personal space.

On screen, an actress wept, begging her husband to stay home and fix their marriage.

Vanessa leaned close to Adrian’s ear. Her voice carried over the movie's quiet, dramatic score.

"Some women only know how to wait," she whispered. Her hand slid onto Adrian's thigh, her fingers curling into the fabric of his jeans. "Other women actually know how to keep you company."

Adrian chuckled. He turned his head, pressing a kiss to her temple. "You don't have to worry about her. She never leaves the house anyway."

"What about the kid?" Vanessa asked. She gestured vaguely toward Noah with her free hand. "Does he know how to keep a secret?"

"He likes you better," Adrian replied. He passed the candy box over Vanessa's lap, offering it to my son. "Right, buddy?"

Noah nodded eagerly, grabbing a handful of candy. "Mom is boring. She just makes me do homework and take medicine. You bought me that new video game."

"See?" Adrian smiled, pulling Vanessa closer. "I told you I had it handled."

My nails dug so hard into my palms that the skin broke. A sharp sting grounded me, pulling me out of the blinding shock.

I didn't scream. I didn't march down the row and drag my husband out by his collar. The old me, the ruthless litigator, analyzed the scene with absolute ice in my veins. Confronting them now would only result in a messy public scene. Adrian would lie. He would manipulate the narrative. He would use Noah against me.

I lowered the bucket to the floor, leaving it beside a trash can.

I pulled my phone from my purse.

My thumb swiped to the camera icon. I tapped the screen, double-checking the flash indicator. Off.

I raised the lens. The movie screen provided the perfect backlighting. It illuminated them flawlessly—Adrian’s arm wrapped around Vanessa’s waist, Noah leaning into his father’s side, completely complicit in the betrayal.

I pressed the capture button.

A clear, damning photo of the three of them. A perfect little family.

My phone buzzed in my hand, vibrating silently against my palm. A text from Adrian popped up at the top of the screen.

The movie started. Where are you?

Before I could type a single letter, a second message arrived.

Stop wandering around the mall. Just go home and wait for us. I'll bring Noah back after dinner.

He was dismissing me. He was sending me away so he could take his mistress and my son to a nice dinner, likely paid for with the joint credit card I managed.

My thumb hovered over the keyboard. I wanted to text him back. I wanted to tell him I was standing ten feet away. I wanted to watch him panic.

But panic was temporary. Ruin was permanent.

I swiped his notification away.

Instead, I opened my contacts and scrolled down to a name I hadn't messaged in nearly a decade. Marcus. My former mentor at the law firm, the man who taught me how to destroy an opponent before they even realized they were in a fight.

I attached the photo of Adrian, Vanessa, and Noah.

I typed a single sentence.

I need the draft of that contingency agreement I left in your safe eight years ago.

I hit send.

I watched the screen, the blue bubble sitting there in the silence.

Three seconds later, three gray typing dots appeared on my screen.

The dots vanished.

A new message popped up.

I've been waiting for this text. The safe is open. Come to the office.
