Chapter 1 of My Mother-in-law Died, But My Husband Didn't Believe It

On the tenth anniversary of our marriage, my mother-in-law had a brain hemorrhage and was hospitalized.

When the hospital issued a critical illness notice, my husband was celebrating his mistress's birthday.

The next day, my mother-in-law passed away, but my husband said, "Riley, you're cursing against my mother, even though she treated you so well! Your methods are becoming more and more despicable!"

He opened the urn and said, "Have you caused enough trouble?"

——

"Mom is really sick, why don't you believe me? Please, just transfer me another $20,000."

The phone on the other end erupted with my husband's angry voice.

"Riley, is that all you want from me now? Money? Dream on!"

The nurses and patients around me stared at me with strange looks.

I held the phone tightly, trying to control my voice.

"Mom is really sick. I, I asked the nurse to tell you..."

"Who knows if you're not trying to cheat me! Mom's body has always been fine! I said I was working overtime. Can't you leave me alone?"

The pile of payment receipts was getting thicker and thicker.

A soft voice came from the other end of the phone.

"Ryan, who's calling? Didn't you agree to just spend time with me today?"

Boom!

That voice...

It turned out that he had gone to accompany Rachel Parker.

His college junior, whom he adored.

"I'm working, stop calling!"

"But I went to your company, and your boss said you weren't working today! Ryan, are you not going to save your mother?"

Without realizing it, my words were already trembling.

Ryan Morris didn't answer me, but instead questioned me.

"Riley, you dare to investigate me!"

"Are you with Rachel?"

"It's none of your business! I'll tell you the truth, I am with Rachel. What are you going to do about it? Remember, everything you eat and use is bought by me! You'd better behave yourself, otherwise you won't get a penny! Without me, you're nothing! Go away!"

The phone was hung up, and Ryan's voice was very loud.

I even felt the echo of his voice in the corridor.

The people around me looked at me sympathetically and quickly moved away.

I leaned against the wall, shaking as I walked towards the ward.

As soon as I opened the door, I saw my mother-in-law's heart rate slowly becoming a straight line.

I was so panicked that I wanted to run over there immediately.

But my legs wouldn't listen to me and I fell flat on my face.

I struggled to get up but then fell down again.

Everyone around me was looking at me like I was a freak, and no one offered to help me up.

"Mom, mom..."

I couldn't hear my own voice and tears streamed down my face, blurring my vision.

I could feel my hand grasping my mother-in-law's hand, but then everything went black and I passed out.

When I woke up, I had bruises all over my body.

I went to the morgue to claim the body.

After completing all the necessary paperwork, I had only six dollars left.

I bought bread and went to Ryan's company building with the urn.

But I didn't see him for three days.

Ryan called me on the fourth day.

"Hello..."

"Riley! Are you crazy? Bringing the urn to my company building to block me? My colleagues have been calling me non-stop! I tell you, if I get fired, you'll starve to death!"

At this point, I didn't even have the energy to argue with him. But I still wanted to see him one last time.

"Where are you?"

He was silent for a long time before giving me an address.

It was a new bar.

It was like a maze inside, and I searched for a long time before I found the room he mentioned.

"Andy, you're still young. You don't understand. I'll tell you, a wife is like a dog. You don't have to put in so much effort. Look at my wife. Isn't she trying her best to please me every day? The less you care about women, the more they can't live without you."

I opened the door and saw Ryan crossing his legs and leaning back on the sofa, looking cool.

And his so-called good friends were looking at him in admiration.

The ten years I had spent taking care of the family was a joke.

Rachel Parker was sitting next to Ryan, looking pretty like a flower.

Compared to her, I was supposed to lose.

I remembered that I was the same age as Rachel, even a few months younger.

But now I looked like I was ten years older than her.

"Ryan, are you really not going to give Rachel a formal status?"

What was Rachel worried about? There was even a hint of concern on her face.

Her hand trembled as she tried to pick a mango.

"Of course I'm going to give Rachel a status."

Rachel obviously breathed a sigh of relief.

His friends opened champagne to celebrate.

"I thought Ryan wouldn't be able to let go of his wife after ten years of marriage," one of them said.

"Yes, I remember that Ryan's anniversary is Rachel's birthday," another added.

This reminded me as well.

Neither of us ever ate cake, and he was even allergic to mangoes.

But every time we celebrated our anniversary, Ryan would buy a huge mango cake.

So, even on our anniversary, he was celebrating his dream girl's birthday?

Even though she couldn't see it.

Then I should definitely let him.

"Over the ten years we've been together, I've long been tired of her. You have no idea, every time I come home and see her, I feel disgusted, even looking at her makes me sick. But she never gets tired of me, she would come up with all sorts of lies just to see me, just to get me to spend time with her. That's why I say, my wife is so despicable."

"Hahaha!"

Laughter echoed in the private room.

None of them even noticed someone coming in.

"Ryan."

My voice wasn't very loud, but everyone turned to look at me.

"Ah!" Rachel exclaimed, hiding behind Ryan.

Ryan jumped up even faster.

"Riley, are you crazy? What are you doing here, trying to scare people?"

Yes, I was holding my mother-in-law's ashes.

Because of the 20,000 dollars medical fee, my mother-in-law was gone.

And the bottle of wine on the table had a label that read $1888.

A fruit plate cost $288.

I took a step forward, but Ryan covered his mouth.

"Don't come any closer! Riley, if you have a problem with your brain, go to the hospital. You're just adding to my..."

Ryan was stunned, squinting his eyes, trying to get a clearer look at the photo on the urn.

"Bang!"

Ryan punched the wall and came over to grab my collar.

"Riley, how dare you curse my mother! She treats you so well!"

Rachel also stood up, looking at me with disdain.

"I know you want Ryan to accompany you, but you can't use such despicable means."

Ryan started poking my shoulder with his fist.

"Riley, you curse her just because she's not your mom? Why don't you say your mom is dead?"

"Slap!"

I slapped Ryan hard.

Everyone stared at me in shock.

After all, the obedient and gentle wife who never fought back or retaliated actually had a time of resistance.

"You dare hit me?"

Ryan covered his face.

"You fucking dare hit me!"

Everyone around us looked menacingly at me.

All I wanted was to escape.

"Ryan, let's get a divorce," I said.

"Divorce! Right now! Leave, get out of here!"

I handed the urn to Ryan, but he dodged it.

I walked inside and placed the urn on the table, under the bewildered gaze of everyone.

"If you are willing to transfer the 20,000 dollars to me, Mom won't die."

After saying that, I turned around and left.

But I was blocked by Ryan's friends.

"Riley, you really love money, don't you? You think you're smart, huh? Haha, just $20,000? That's just you using the sickness as an excuse to line your own pockets!"

Rachel had already returned to her seat and was eating a mango.

She was eating it elegantly, holding a fork in one hand and looking at me.

"Yes, I remember Ryan's mother was very healthy."

Rachel called out, and Ryan immediately went over to her like a lap dog.

"Eh~"

He had a flattering expression, which made me feel sick to my stomach and made me feel uncomfortable.

"Since she wants the money so badly, give her some. Don't make your wife suffer, after all, you haven't divorced yet."

Ryan immediately nodded and pulled out several thousand dollars from his bag, throwing it into my lap.

"Is that enough?"

It had always been difficult for me to ask him for money.

Every single time.

Rachel's words were like a command to him.

I was now penniless, so there was no reason for me to refuse.

I picked up the money, and everyone laughed and pointed at me.

I didn't know what I had done to be ashamed.

"Enough!"

"Then get the hell out of here!"

I nodded and walked out, and Ryan's voice came from behind me.

"And don't forget to take this with you! Is it too much to ask for a little humor?"

"Do you not believe me no matter how many times I say it? What's inside is your mother's ashes..."

Before I finished speaking, Ryan kicked the urn to the ground.

The lid clattered to the ground.

The ashes spilled out.

I took a deep breath, and my eyes filled with tears.

I desperately scooped up every inch of ashes.

But Ryan was laughing hysterically at me, "Keep pretending!"

Ryan took a bottle of wine from Rachel's hand and emptied it all on the ground.

My hands were wet and I knelt on the ground, crying out loud.

10 years.

It took me 10 years to see a man's true color.

"Your mother calls you every night to talk to you. You can't forget that."

Ryan's face changed slightly.

The others kept pouring drinks on me intentionally or unintentionally.

Ryan took out his phone and searched for the phone number.

Then he raised his hand and slapped me.

"Did you hide my mom's phone? She can't sleep without calling me! Riley, if you want to die, just die. Don't involve my mom! You are a snake in the heart!"

Ryan hurriedly redialed the phone.

But he couldn't get through several times.

"My mother called me eight times on the last day! Did you abuse her? Did you?"

Ryan was so angry that his face turned red and his neck was swollen.

I suddenly felt like laughing.

"Ha, ha... ha..."

He grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly.

"Speak!"

He screamed at me while paying attention to his phone.

"You know she called you eight times?"

Ryan shifted his eyes nervously.

"Well, it's because you asked me for money. I turned off my phone. It must be you, you didn't get money from me, so you used my mother's phone to call me, right?"

"Ryan, don't argue with her anymore. I can see that she just wants money. She's just greedy for money."

"Yes, Ryan, let's stop today. Go home and see your mother."

They all left.

Ryan was still on the phone.

I wiped the ashes on the ground, picked it up, and put it on the table.

Before leaving, I bowed for the last time.

As soon as I turned around, I found Ryan looking at me with a cold face at the door.

"What were you performing for? Hurry up!"

On the way back, he was still with Rachel.

The two of them were talking and laughing, and I felt like an outsider in the back seat.

After returning home, Ryan rushed inside.

"Mom!"

"Mom!"

"Where is my mom? I'm asking you, where is my mom!"

Ryan opened his mouth as if he was going to bite someone.

"Ryan..."

Rachel called out to Ryan.

On the coffee table were all the medical bills from the time Ryan's mother was in the hospital.

When she called Ryan that day, she didn't even hope Ryan would pay.

She just wanted to hear her son's voice one last time.

She wanted to advise Ryan to live a good life, but in the end, she didn't even hear his voice.

I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

A man could be so rotten and filthy.

"Rachel, you, you help me look at this. Is, is this, death notice?"
