Chapter 1 of My Mate Tried to Kill Me for His Luna

His teeth grazed my neck at 11:47 under the full moon, and then they didn't.

I felt Brody's breath stop against my skin. One heartbeat. Two. Long enough for three hundred wolves in the clearing to lean forward. Long enough for me to understand that whatever was coming next, I had prepared for the wrong ceremony.

He lifted his mouth from my throat.

"I, Brody Calloway, Alpha of Silverfang Pack, reject you, Kehlani Sinclair, as my mate and Luna."

The bond broke inside my chest like a door closing on an empty room. Cold first. Then hollow. My dormant mark—the one everyone said I couldn't feel—bleached white against my collarbone. A phantom pain moved down my sternum. Frozen lightning, in a body they had told me for twenty-two years was numb.

Brody turned. He extended his hand.

Layla walked out from the front row of the pack in a gown I hadn't approved from a seamstress I hadn't hired. Her scent—the manufactured one, the electric one, the one I had spent eighteen months not naming—bloomed through the clearing like a false spring. She slid her fingers into his. She did not look at me.

My knees hit the ceremonial stone.

I heard someone gasp. Someone else laughed—quickly bitten off. I pressed my palms flat against the cold slab and locked every muscle in my jaw. My left hand, hidden in the folds of the Luna whites I had sewn the pearl trim onto myself, was trembling. Wolfsbane tremor. Old friend. I let it happen where no one could see.

I did not scream.

I did not cry.

I counted the torches around the altar—six—and I counted the seconds until the first pack member moved toward Brody with congratulations. Fourteen. Fourteen seconds was all it took for three hundred wolves to decide who I was now.

---

The torches burned down around me while the pack celebrated at the tree line.

Beta Aldric Vane finally approached. He is the man who signed my alliance protocols for six years. He did not meet my eyes.

"Kehlani." His voice was low. "By the Alpha's order, your administrative access has been suspended. Effective now."

He slid a folded directive across the stone toward my knees.

I picked it up. I read it in full—every clause, every revoked credential, every system I had built with my own hands and would no longer be permitted to touch. I folded it along its original crease. I placed it inside the leather folio I had carried onto the altar because I carry it everywhere.

Then I stood up.

My legs held. My mark was cold. Three hundred wolves parted in silence as I walked off the platform under my own power. Not one of them spoke. Not one of them stopped me.

Good.

---

By morning I was in a room near the Omega wing.

Layla was already there when I came to collect my things. She had three omegas rearranging my files—alliance correspondence with Blackmoor, healer supply ledgers, border patrol rotations—into disordered boxes on the floor. Six years of work, unspined and stacked at random.

She turned. She smiled the smile she had been practicing for eighteen months.

"I hope you don't mind—I've asked them to box your files. I'll need the desk space."

I looked at her. I looked at the files. I catalogued which alliance she had already reversed the pagination on, which patrol rotation she had upended, which healer inventory she would not know how to read without the shorthand key that existed only in my head.

I took my folio. I took the silver-tipped patrol knife from the drawer.

I walked past her without a word, and by the time I reached the corridor, I had already begun, silently, the inventory of everything she would never be able to reconstruct.

---

The council meeting on Thursday was held two walls away from my reduced quarters. Cheap construction. I heard every word.

Brody's voice, warm with rehearsed certainty. "A Luna who cannot shift. Cannot feel bond-pain. Cannot lead a ceremonial hunt. The Moon Goddess corrects what politics arranged."

The elders murmured agreement.

My folio was open on my knees. A half-finished supply inventory. My left hand was shaking against my thigh again. I set the pen down. I waited for the tremor to pass. I picked the pen up.

At the bottom of the page, in small precise handwriting, I began a second list.

Eighteen months of Layla's inconsistencies. Dated. Sourced from memory. The night her scent first sharpened. The patrols she volunteered for that placed her nearest to Brody. The tea blends that appeared in my kitchen. The way my left hand had begun trembling again six months ago after a decade of stillness.

I wrote until my hand stopped shaking.

---

On the third day, Layla knocked.

She carried a porcelain cup on a small tray. Steam curling. Her voice, warm and deniable.

"It must be such a relief, honestly. Not feeling the bond-pain. The rest of us suffer when our mates are distant. But you? You're just—numb. Bond-dead." A smile. "I almost envy it."

I took the cup.

I knew the blend the moment it touched my lip. Cross-referenced against the supply inventory I still held in my head. Third shelf, back wall of the healer's storeroom. Restricted. Signed out under Layla's credentials four times in the last six weeks.

I drank.

I let her watch me drink.

Because refusing would tell her I knew, and I did not yet have enough. I noted the aftertaste. I noted the number of sips. I noted the exact moment the tremor in my left hand began.

She smiled, satisfied, and set the empty tray on my desk.

"I'll bring more tomorrow."
