My Husband Slapped Me Until My Billionaire Family Arrived Summary
Chapter 1 of My Husband Slapped Me Until My Billionaire Family Arrived
The principal told me to apologize to the boy who had beaten my son.
I refused, and my husband, Caleb, walked into the school.
He didn't look at the bruises on Jamie's arms first, but slapped me in front of the whole school.
Then he ordered me to bow my head to his boss's family.
My cheek burned. I tasted copper.
"Nora." Caleb's voice was low, almost gentle. That was the worst part. "Fix this. Now."
---
Forty minutes earlier, I'd found my son curled up in the last stall of the boys' bathroom.
His knees were pulled to his chest. His lip was split open. When I pushed up his sleeve, purple marks circled his arm like fingerprints. His shirt had ridden up, and there was more along his ribs, dark and swollen.
His backpack sat soaking in the sink. Pieces of his robot model, the one he and I had built over three weekends, lay scattered across the tile, crushed flat.
"Baby. Jamie. Who did this?"
He was crying so hard he hiccupped between words. "Leo. He locked the door. He said I had to bark like a dog."
"Did you?"
"He kept hitting me until I did." Jamie wiped his nose with his wrist. "He said his dad can make my dad lose his job."
The teacher on duty, a thin man named Mr. Grady, stood in the bathroom doorway with his arms folded.
"Mrs. Doyle, there's no camera in here. Kids slip on wet floors all the time."
I stared at him. "He slipped into a fist? Several times?"
"I'm only saying we don't know what happened."
"Then call Leo's parents and we'll find out."
---
Bianca Vale arrived in cream silk and sunglasses she didn't take off indoors. Her son Leo trailed behind her, a big kid for ten, chewing gum.
She didn't say hello. She crouched in front of Leo and checked his collar, his cuffs, the knees of his pants.
"Good. Not a scratch on you." She stood and finally looked at Jamie. Then she laughed, a short, bright sound. "Oh, this one. Leo's told me about him. He makes up stories."
"Your son locked mine in a bathroom stall and beat him."
"Did anyone see it?" She tilted her head. "No? Then it's a little boy's word against my son's. And honestly, I know how this goes. Families like yours always think there's money to be made off families like mine."
"Families like mine?"
"Scholarship parents." She said it the way someone else might say *mold*.
Jamie pressed his face into my side.
Principal Denise Harlow hurried in, smoothing her blazer. The donor event was already underway next door. I could hear clapping through the wall.
"Mrs. Vale, I'm so sorry you were pulled away." She turned to me, and her smile thinned. "Mrs. Doyle, let's be reasonable. Jamie has a history of being emotional."
"He's eight. He has a history of being eight."
"The Vales are Westbridge's most generous donors. The new science wing has their name on it." Denise lowered her voice. "I'd hate for this to affect Jamie's placement next semester. Spots are limited. I think the simplest solution is a quick apology, and we all move on."
I felt my hands go cold. "You want *me* to apologize."
"For the accusation. Yes."
"No."
Bianca checked her nails. "Then call your husband. Maybe he'll be smarter."
So I did. I stepped into the hallway, holding Jamie's hand, and dialed Caleb with shaking fingers.
"Jamie's hurt. Another kid beat him up, and the school's covering for the family. I need you here."
"I'm on my way," he said.
I actually felt relieved. I remember that.
---
Now he stood in the auditorium, his handprint fading on my face, and the relief felt like a joke I'd told myself.
He'd come through the main doors, spotted Bianca beside the donor table, and seen the tall gray-haired man next to her. Marcus Vale. Caleb's regional director. The man who'd be signing off on his promotion in March.
Caleb's face had drained. He'd walked straight past our son.
Now his fingers clamped down on my shoulder, pressing hard, pushing me forward.
"Mr. Vale, I'm so sorry about this," he said. "My wife gets worked up. She didn't mean any of it."
Marcus didn't answer. He only lifted an eyebrow at Bianca, like this was mildly entertaining.
"Say it, Nora." Caleb's grip tightened until my collarbone ached. "Say you're sorry to the Vales."
The whole room waited. Somebody's phone was out, recording. A little girl in a plaid jumper had her mouth hanging open.
I looked down at Jamie. His split lip had started bleeding again.
"Caleb," I said quietly. "Look at your son."
He didn't.
"Apologize."
I reached up and peeled his fingers off my shoulder one at a time.
"No."
Then I took Jamie's hand and walked toward the doors. My heels sank into the auditorium carpet. My knees felt like water, but I didn't stop.
"Nora!" Caleb's voice cracked across the room. "You walk out that door, don't bother coming home!"
I didn't turn around.
Jamie said nothing the whole way across the parking lot. He held my hand so tightly his knuckles went white. He didn't cry. He climbed into the back seat, buckled himself in, and stared straight ahead.
I shut his door. Then I got in and shut mine.
That was when he broke.
"Mommy." His voice was tiny. "Why is Daddy bullying you too?"
I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.
So I laughed. I don't know why. A small, awful laugh that didn't sound like mine. Jamie stared at me, scared, and I pressed my hand over my mouth until it stopped.
"I don't know, baby," I said. "But it's not your fault. Okay? None of this is your fault."
---
At home, I cleaned his lip with a cotton ball and put ice on his ribs. I read him two chapters of his dinosaur book until he fell asleep on the couch with his fist curled near his chin.
Then I sat at the kitchen table and looked at our wedding photo on the fridge.
For the first time in nine years, I let myself think it.
*I could leave.*
The doorbell rang at nine.
Caleb stood on the porch with a bouquet of red roses, the grocery-store price sticker still on the plastic. His tie was loose. He looked tired, almost soft, and for one stupid second my heart lifted.
He held out the flowers.
"Marcus is coming over for dinner tomorrow," he said. "Don't embarrass me again."
