Chapter 1 of My Husband Secretly Raised His Mistress’s Son

I turned thirty with candles I lit myself.

The table was set for two. I'd put out the good plates, the ones we only used for anniversaries and dinner parties. There was a bottle of Burgundy breathing on the counter. I'd even worn the black dress — the one Dorian once said made him forget what he was saying mid-sentence.

That was three hours ago.

Now the candles had burned down to stubs and the wine had gone warm and I was sitting on the kitchen floor with my back against the cabinet, still in the dress, scrolling through a phone that had nothing new on it. One text, sent at seven: *Running behind, don't wait up.* That was it. No call. No apology dressed up as an explanation.

I told myself it was work. Dorian was a litigator. Cases didn't respect dinner reservations.

I was good at telling myself things.

The buzzer made me flinch. I stood up, smoothed the dress, and felt something embarrassingly close to relief. I crossed the apartment and pressed the intercom. 'Yes?'

'Delivery for Clark. Apartment 14B.'

Not Dorian's voice. I buzzed him up anyway.

The driver handed me a white bakery box tied with a blue ribbon. Small. Light. He was already back in the elevator before I thought to say anything.

I set it on the counter and looked at it for a moment. We hadn't ordered anything. I would have known.

I untied the ribbon.

The cake inside was small enough for a child's party — white frosting, cartoon dinosaurs piped along the edges in green and orange, and in the center, in careful blue letters: *Happy Birthday, Liam.*

I stood there with the box open in front of me.

Liam.

I didn't know a Liam. We didn't know a Liam. There was no child in our lives named Liam.

I picked up the receipt tucked under the lid. Our address was there — 14B, Upper East Side — listed as the secondary drop. The primary address was in Brooklyn. Carroll Gardens. An apartment number I didn't recognize.

I read the name on the account.

Dorian A. Clark.

My thumb scrolled up through the order history. It wasn't one order. It was months of them. Children's meals. Baby formula. Diapers, size 3. A birthday cake last year too, same dinosaurs, same name. Toddler snack packs. A small pair of sneakers, size 7 toddler, delivered to the Brooklyn address.

I set the receipt down on the counter very carefully, the way you set down something fragile.

Then I went to the window.

I didn't call him. I don't know why exactly — instinct, maybe, or something colder than instinct. I just stood at the window with the city spread out below me and understood, in the way you understand something your body knows before your mind catches up, that calling him would only give him time to build the story.

I went to my laptop instead.

Bank statements first. I had access to the joint account — we'd always kept it that way, open, transparent, *trusting.* I pulled twelve months of records and started reading. There were transfers I'd never looked at closely before. Monthly. Consistent. Labeled *MED — Patricia C.* Patricia was Dorian's mother. She'd had some health issues a few years back, and Dorian had told me he was helping cover costs that Medicare didn't touch. I'd never questioned it. Why would I?

I opened a new tab and started adding the transfers up.

I was still adding when his text came in at midnight: *Don't wait up. Pulling an all-nighter. Big case.*

I looked at the text. Then I looked out the window.

His car was at the curb.

I watched him get out. He straightened his jacket, checked his phone once, and then a woman stepped out of the shadows near the building entrance. She was tall. Dark hair. She walked toward him like she'd done it a thousand times.

He put his hand on the small of her back.

That was the thing that did it. Not the cake. Not the transfers. That hand, in that place, the exact way he used to hold me when we walked into a room together — like I was something he was proud of.

I didn't cry. I noticed that about myself. I thought I would, and I didn't.

I took a screenshot of his location data. I checked the timestamp. I went back to the bank statements.

I worked until four in the morning.

---

Dakota West took one look at me when I walked into the office and put her coffee down.

'Soleil.'

'Don't,' I said.

She was quiet for a moment. Then: 'I saw him. In Brooklyn. Months ago. A restaurant on Smith Street.' She looked at her hands. 'I didn't know how to—'

'Help me now,' I said. I slid her the list I'd written on the subway. 'That's what I need.'

She pulled her chair over to my desk without another word.

By two o'clock, I was sitting across from Renata Solís in a glass-walled office on Park Avenue. She was somewhere in her fifties, silver-haired, and she had the kind of stillness that made you feel like the room was hers.

I laid everything on her desk. The receipt. The order history. The transfers. The screenshot.

She read through it without interrupting me once.

'We need three things,' she said finally. 'Financial records — more than this. Communications evidence. And a paternity test.' She looked up. 'Don't move any money. Don't say a word to him. Not yet.'

'Okay,' I said.

My voice was steady. I was already thinking about what came next.
