Chapter 1 of He Hid Me for Three Years, Then I Found His Engagement Photo

AVA'S POV

For three years, I had loved a man I wasn't allowed to stand next to.

At Cole International, Ethan Cole was the CEO, and I was Ava Morgan, Strategy Manager. Those were the only names we used inside the glass tower on Madison Avenue. We never got on the same elevator. At company events, he sat at the head table and I sat three tables back, laughing at whatever the guy from Finance said. When Ethan drove me home, his driver stopped a full block before my building, and I walked the rest of the way alone.

"Once the board confirms the long-term contract," Ethan always said, "this ends. No more hiding."

Two more months.

I'd already waited three years. Two more months felt like nothing.

At eleven that Thursday night, I swiped my badge at the lobby turnstile, annoyed with myself. I'd left my personal phone in my desk drawer, the phone Ethan texted, the one nobody at work knew existed. I couldn't sleep without it on the nightstand. Pathetic, maybe, but true.

The fortieth floor was dark except for the emergency lights and the hum of the vending machine. I grabbed my phone, then hesitated.

Light spilled from the executive suite at the end of the hall.

Ethan had texted at nine that he was stuck in a late call with London. I figured I'd poke my head in and steal thirty seconds of him before going home. Nobody would see.

His office door stood half open. The room was empty, his jacket gone from the chair, his laptop closed. The view of Manhattan glittered behind the desk like it always did, cold and expensive.

A black leather folder lay open on the blotter.

I wasn't snooping. That's what I told myself later. It was just sitting there, facing the door, and the photo on top was the size of a magazine page.

It was a professional studio shot. Soft gray backdrop, perfect lighting. Ethan in a black suit, the charcoal tie I'd bought him last Christmas. Beside him, in a white gown, stood Victoria Ashford, the daughter of the man who ran Ashford Capital. I'd sat across from her at two investor dinners. She'd complimented my earrings.

Ethan's hand rested on her waist.

Beneath the photo, typed and formatted on company letterhead, was a press release.

COLE INTERNATIONAL AND ASHFORD CAPITAL ANNOUNCE A NEW FAMILY ALLIANCE

In the bottom right corner, someone had printed a release date.

Next Monday.

I didn't turn the page. I didn't read the first paragraph or look for the word *engagement*, even though I knew it had to be there. Something inside me went very still, the way a room goes quiet right after glass breaks.

I closed my hand around my phone and walked out.

The hallway felt twice as long as it had a minute ago. I kept my eyes on the elevator bank and pressed the call button. The doors on the left slid open almost immediately, and I stepped in.

"Ava."

Ethan was coming from the conference room, his sleeves rolled to the elbow, tablet in hand. He stopped when he saw me. His gaze went to my face, then past me, toward his office, toward the door he'd left open.

He knew. I watched him know.

I pressed the button for the lobby.

He crossed the distance in four long strides and caught the door with his palm just before it closed. The sensor chimed, and the doors slid back open.

"The photo isn't what you think," he said.

For three years, those words would have worked. *It isn't what you think. Let me explain.* He'd said versions of them when he skipped my birthday dinner for a board meeting, when a gossip blog ran a picture of him with a model at a gala. I always listened. He always had a reason, and I always believed it, because believing him was easier than living without him.

I looked at him now, at the hand braced against the door, the faint shadow of stubble on his jaw, the tie. That tie.

"How long," I said, "has that photo existed?"

He didn't answer right away.

It was only a second, but I'd spent three years studying Ethan Cole's silences. I knew the one where he was choosing his words carefully. I knew the one where he was annoyed. This was neither. This was the silence of a man deciding whether the truth would cost less than a lie.

"Six weeks," he said.

There it was. Better than any explanation he could have given me.

Six weeks.

Six weeks ago, he'd shown up at my apartment at one in the morning, tired and smelling like rain. He'd kicked off his shoes, crawled into my bed, and pulled me against his chest. I remembered his thumb moving slowly over my hip. I remembered the exact words, because I'd repeated them to myself on the bad days.

*Two more months, Ava. Then no more hiding.*

He must have sat in that studio in that tie before he came to me that week. Maybe the same day.

"Six weeks," I repeated.

"It's not finalized." He stepped closer, lowering his voice even though the floor was empty. Even now, he checked the hallway. "Richard Ashford came to me with a proposal. The board wants the merger, and the board wants stability. That photo was for options. Nothing's signed."

"There's a release date on it, Ethan."

"Dates move."

"Did you tell her that? Does Victoria know dates move?"

His jaw tightened. "This isn't about Victoria."

"No," I said. "It's about the fact that you've been coming home to me every single night for six weeks and you never said a word."

"Because I was handling it."

"You were handling me."

That landed. I saw it in the way his shoulders went rigid, in the way he looked at me like I'd said something in a language he hadn't known I spoke.

I reached past him and pressed the close button again.

The doors began to slide. Ethan's hand shot out and stopped them, his grip on the edge white-knuckled.

"Listen to me," he said. Not asking. He'd never needed to ask. "Come back to my office. Give me ten minutes, and I'll walk you through all of it. You're tired, you saw something out of context, and you're—"

"No."

The word came out quiet and clean.

He stared at me. I don't think I had ever said it to him before. Not about anything that mattered. Not when he moved our anniversary, not when he asked me to leave a party early so no one would notice we'd arrived around the same time, not when he told me to wait.

"Ava."

"I said no." My voice didn't shake, which surprised me more than him. "Move your hand."

For a moment, he didn't. He stood in the doorway of the elevator, the most powerful man in the building, and I watched him try to find the lever he'd always been able to pull. The look. The low voice. The reminder of everything we'd built.

Then, slowly, his fingers loosened.

I pressed the button one more time.

The doors slid toward each other, narrowing the space between us to a strip of his face, his eyes still locked on mine, his mouth opening like he had one more thing to say.

He didn't say it.

The doors closed, and the elevator began to drop.

I stood in the mirrored box with my phone in my hand and my reflection staring back at me from three sides. I'd expected to cry. I didn't.

Because the photo wasn't what scared me. Not really.

Men like Ethan married women like Victoria Ashford all the time. Some part of me had always known that was a risk, the same way you know a plane could fall out of the sky and you board anyway.

What scared me was the math.

Six weeks of planning. Six weeks of studio lighting and press releases and release dates. And through all of it, he'd still come home to me every night, kissed my shoulder, and fallen asleep holding me like I was the one thing in his life he'd never have to lie to.

He hadn't just been preparing to leave me.

He'd been preparing to leave me while making sure I never saw it coming.
