Chapter 1 of My Husband Hung Up When I Was Kidnapped

The pharmacist said forty dollars like it was nothing. Like everyone had forty dollars.

I tapped my card. The little machine blinked red. CARD DECLINED.

"Try again?" the pharmacist asked.

I tried again. Red again. My face went hot, and not just from the fever. People were waiting behind me. I could feel their eyes on my back, patient, then less patient.

"I'm sorry," I said. "I'll come back."

I walked out into the cold without the antibiotics. My head throbbed. The city noise around me sounded strange lately, like someone had wrapped gauze around my ears. Car horns. A siren two blocks over. All of it soft and far away, like it was happening to someone else.

Mason had frozen the accounts three weeks ago. He called it a lesson. "You need to learn the value of money, Everly," he'd said, like he was quoting something. He was. Saige had a way of turning phrases and handing them to him, and he wore them like they were his own.

I went home to the penthouse I had picked out, the one I had spent months decorating — the pale gray walls, the brass fixtures, the reading nook by the window where I used to drink my tea. That night, Mason brought Saige home for dinner.

He didn't ask if it was okay. He just walked in with her on his arm, laughing at something she'd said, and set his keys in the bowl by the door like he did every day. Saige wore a silk blouse the color of champagne. I recognized it. I'd seen the charge on the household account, back when I still had access to see anything at all.

"Everly, this place is stunning," Saige said, touching the back of the velvet chair like she was blessing it. "I could never spend this much on furniture. Growing up how I did, it just feels wrong."

I didn't answer. I set out three plates instead of two, because apparently that was my job now.

Later, in the hallway, I caught Mason's sleeve. "Why would you bring her here? Into our home?"

He looked at me the way you'd look at a stain on a rug. "Saige understands sacrifice," he said. "You've been coddled your whole life, Everly. Maybe it's good for you to see how the rest of the world lives."

I went to bed without saying another word. The fever climbed that night. Nobody brought me water.

By morning, the muffling in my ears had turned into something else. Voices didn't fade in and out anymore — they collapsed, all at once, into a low underwater hum. I stood in the kitchen and watched the coffee maker gurgle and spit, and I realized I couldn't hear it. Not the bubbling, not the hiss of steam. Nothing.

I put my palm flat on the countertop. I felt the vibration instead — a small, stupid tremor traveling up through my hand. That was when I cried. Quietly, so Mason wouldn't hear me from the next room. So no one would.

Three days after that, Mason told me about my mother.

"The ICU costs are excessive,” he said, not looking up from his phone. “Saige mentioned it — the general ward is perfectly adequate for long-term monitoring. I already authorized the transfer."

"You did what?" My voice cracked. "Mason, she needs the monitors. The cardiac—"

"You're being dramatic." He finally looked at me, and there was nothing there. No apology. Just irritation, like I was a meeting running long. "It's one floor, Everly. She'll be fine."

I called the hospital that night, my hands shaking so hard I typed the number wrong twice. A nurse told me visiting hours were over. I told her it was my mother. She said to call in the morning.

At two a.m., my phone rang.

I didn't hear the ringtone — I felt the buzz against the nightstand, and something in my chest already knew before I answered.

I don't remember the cab ride. I remember the hospital's fluorescent lights, too bright, humming in a way I could feel but not hear. I remember running down the hall in the wrong shoes.

The bed was empty. Stripped down to the mattress, corners tucked tight like no one had ever been there at all.

A night-shift nurse stood by the door, her hands folded in front of her, refusing to meet my eyes.

"Where is she?" I asked. "Where's my mother?"

She didn't answer right away. And in the silence — in that terrible, ringing silence I couldn't escape no matter how hard I tried — I already understood.

I just needed her to say it. I needed someone, anyone, to say it out loud, even if I couldn't hear the words.
