Chapter 1 of My Husband Gave Our Company to His Mistress’s Son

The call came while I was standing in my kitchen, sunlight slanting through the window and warming the marble countertop where I'd laid out tomatoes for a sauce I'd probably never make. My phone buzzed. I almost didn't answer.

'Marceline?' The voice was rough, familiar. Tony Gallardo. Our oldest produce supplier. The man who'd sold me bruised tomatoes from the back of his truck in Williamsburg when Reed and I were nobody. 'I got a letter yesterday. Contract cancellation. Effective immediately.'

I set down the knife. 'I didn't authorize that.'

'I know you didn't.' A pause. 'That's why I'm calling.'

I thanked him. Hung up. Stared at the tomatoes.

Two hours later, my inbox delivered the next blow. Sylvia Okafor, head chef at our Tribeca location. One of my first hires. Her resignation email was three sentences long and carefully worded, the kind of careful that meant she was afraid. 'New leadership directives' was the phrase she used. New leadership. I'd been gone four months.

I opened Yelp on my phone. Our Manhattan flagship—the restaurant that had put us on the map, the one that earned the Michelin star I'd cried over in the walk-in freezer at three in the morning—had dropped from 4.7 stars to 3.9. The recent reviews were brutal. 'Not what it used to be.' 'Kitchen seems lost.' 'Where did the magic go?'

I closed my laptop. I did not call Reed. I got in my car.

The drive into the city from our Westchester house took forty minutes. I used to make it every morning for fifteen years. I knew every pothole on the Saw Mill, every merge where the tourists hesitated. I hadn't driven it in months. Reed said I'd earned the rest. He said he had everything under control.

The corporate office was in a low-rise building in Chelsea, tucked between a design studio and a wine bar we did not own. I'd signed the lease myself. I still had the key card.

The receptionist looked up when I walked in. Her face did something complicated. 'Mrs. Parker. We weren't expecting—'

'I'm here to see Reed.'

She picked up the phone. I didn't wait. I walked past her desk, down the hall with the framed press clippings I'd chosen, past the test kitchen where we used to argue about plating at midnight, and stopped at the door to the CEO's office. My office. The door was open.

A man I didn't know was sitting behind my desk.

He was young. Late twenties, maybe thirty. Expensive suit, the kind that fit too well to be off the rack. Dark hair, neat. Confident posture. He was on the phone, laughing at something, and he didn't look up when I stepped into the doorway.

Reed was standing by the window, coffee in hand, looking out at the street below. He turned when he heard my footsteps. For just a second—less than a second—something moved across his face. Surprise. Guilt. I couldn't tell. Then it was gone, replaced by the warm, easy smile I used to believe meant I was safe.

'Marceline.' He set down his coffee and crossed the room. 'I didn't know you were coming in today.'

'I didn't know I needed an appointment.'

The young man ended his call and stood. He extended his hand. 'Emerson Crawford. It's great to finally meet you. Reed's told me so much.'

I shook his hand. His grip was firm, performative. I smiled. 'I'm sorry. I don't think we've met. What do you do here?'

Reed stepped in smoothly. 'Emerson's our new acting director of operations. I brought him on last month to help streamline things while you're taking time off. He's been incredible.'

'Director of operations.' I kept my voice even. 'That's a significant role.'

'Reed said you were ready to step back,' Emerson said. His tone was friendly, but there was something underneath it. Ownership. 'I'm just here to keep things running smoothly.'

I looked at Reed. He still wasn't meeting my eyes. 'We should talk,' I said quietly.

'Of course. Let me just wrap up with Emerson, and I'll come find you.'

I nodded. I walked out. I did not go to the conference room. I went to my car. I sat in the driver's seat with my hands on the wheel and my breath coming too fast. I did not cry.

That night, I sat at my kitchen table with a cup of black coffee and my laptop. The house was silent. Reed had texted to say he'd be late. I opened our business accounts—the ones I still had access to—and started scrolling.

Wire transfers. Dozens of them. Hundreds, maybe. Small enough not to trigger alerts. Regular enough to look like operating expenses. All to accounts I didn't recognize.

I cross-referenced dates. Amounts. Patterns.

By midnight, I'd found the first thread.

I closed the laptop. Finished my coffee. Pulled out a notepad and started writing names. Gerald Whitfield. My attorney. The forensic accountant a friend had recommended years ago when another restaurateur's husband cleaned out their accounts before filing.

I would need to know everything before I moved.

I would need to be sure.

I wrote until my hand cramped. Then I went upstairs, lay down beside my husband in the dark, and did not sleep.
