Chapter 1 of After My Fiancé Replaced Me with His Pregnant Secretary

I almost didn't wear the ring on the flight home.

I'd taken it off twice during the layover in Reykjavik — once to clean it, once just to hold it in my palm and look at it under the terminal lights. Ten years. A chain around my neck instead of my finger because Cullen said he wanted to put it there himself, properly, when I landed. That was the plan. That was always the plan.

JFK smelled like jet fuel and floor wax. I wheeled my suitcase through arrivals with my portfolio case strapped across my back, and I thought: in two hours I'll be in his office. I'll drop the portfolio on his desk. He'll look up, and his face will do that thing.

I took a cab straight to Midtown.

Medina Corp headquarters sits on the corner of 54th and Sixth — forty-two floors of glass and steel that Cullen built from a single inherited property and a willingness to outwork everyone in the room. I know this building the way I know my own handwriting. I helped choose the lobby marble. I sat in the architect's review meetings and pushed for the north-facing windows on the executive floor because Cullen gets headaches in direct sun.

I pushed through the revolving door at 2:47 in the afternoon.

The lobby was the same. Cool air, pale stone, the low hum of the HVAC system I'd complained about for two years. The security desk, the elevator bank, the glass-walled executive suite visible from the atrium if you stood at the right angle.

I stood at the right angle.

She was sitting in my chair.

Not my official chair. Not a chair with my name on it. But the one beside Cullen's desk — the low-backed cream chair I'd dragged in from the conference room three years ago because his guest chairs were too formal for the hours I spent in that office. The one where I used to sit cross-legged with my sketchbook while he took calls.

Nadia Munoz was in it.

I knew who she was. His executive secretary. I'd met her twice at company events — a composed, polished woman who always seemed to be standing slightly closer to Cullen than the situation required. I hadn't thought much about it. I'd trusted him.

She was visibly pregnant. Seven months, maybe eight. And on her left hand, catching the afternoon light through forty feet of glass, was a ring I didn't recognize.

Cullen was standing at his window with his back to me. He didn't see me. She did.

For one second, Nadia Munoz looked directly at me through the glass atrium wall. Her expression didn't change. She just held my gaze, and then she turned back to whatever document was open on his desk, and she said something, and Cullen turned around.

He saw me.

He looked away first.

I don't remember walking out. I remember the revolving door, and then the cold, and then I was sitting in a coffee shop on 53rd with my portfolio case between my feet and my phone on the table and a coffee I hadn't touched.

I searched his name.

The domestic partnership registration was public record. Filed six months ago. Cullen James Medina and Nadia Rose Munoz. I read it three times. The coffee went cold.

Eleven minutes later, I called him.

He picked up on the second ring. His voice was careful. Controlled. The voice he uses in difficult negotiations when he's already decided the outcome.

"Lorelei."

"Tell me what I just saw."

A pause. "Things changed."

"Things changed," I repeated.

"You were gone for three years. I'm not going to — this doesn't need to be harder than it already is."

"Don't," I said. My voice came out very quiet. "Don't tell me how hard this is for you."

"I'll have someone send your things from storage —"

"Cullen."

But he was already gone. The call ended. I sat there with the phone in my hand and the ring pressing against my sternum through my blouse, and I thought about a summer night seven years ago when he knelt on the chapel steps for four hours in 104-degree heat, praying for my mother, and I thought: that man and this man cannot both be real.

By the next morning, I was the other woman.

Nadia's social media posts went up overnight — careful, soft-lit photographs, a few sentences about protecting her family, anonymous tips to three architecture gossip accounts I'd followed for years. By 9 AM my phone was full of messages from colleagues. Careful messages. Distancing messages. The kind people send when they've already decided which side they're on and want to be remembered as having been kind about it.

I went to Medina Corp anyway. I had drafting tools in my desk. I had three years of work in those files.

Marcus Hale met me in the lobby. Cullen's CFO — a trim, pleasant man who had spent four years telling me my promotion was 'under review.' He smiled at me the way people smile at problems they've been authorized to handle.

"Ms. Castro." He held out a small cardboard box. My drafting tools were already inside it. "Your building access has been suspended pending HR review. Mr. Medina is unavailable."

I looked at the box. I looked at the marble floor I'd helped choose. I looked at the security desk where the guard was studying his monitor with great concentration.

"Of course he is," I said.

I took the box. I walked back out through the revolving door into the cold. The ring was still on its chain against my chest, and it had never felt heavier, and I stood on the sidewalk outside the building I had helped build and understood, with a clarity that felt almost physical, that every door had been locked before I'd even landed.
