Chapter 1 of My Husband Bought His Mistress Our Apartment

The bracelet sat on the coffee table between us like a piece of evidence I wasn't ready to admit into the record.

Gavin had wrapped it himself—I could tell by the uneven creases in the drugstore paper and the single piece of tape holding the whole thing together. He'd set it down without ceremony while I was pouring wine, said "Merry Christmas, Kath," and disappeared into the bedroom before I could even pick it up.

I heard his voice through the door. Low. Careful. The kind of careful that meant he was talking to someone he didn't want me to hear.

I stayed where I was at the dining table. The Christmas music playing from the speaker sounded tinny and too bright. I looked at the two glasses of wine I'd poured—one for him, one for me—and realized I'd been sitting alone for ten minutes.

I unwrapped the bracelet. Silver. Thin. The kind of thing you buy when you realize at four-thirty on Christmas Eve that you forgot something. I turned it over in my hand once, set it back down, and drank my wine.

Gavin came out of the bedroom smoothing his collar. That thing he did when he was lying. I'd noticed it years ago and filed it away without understanding why I was filing it.

"Work?" I asked.

"Yeah." He smiled. Easy. Practiced. "Just some last-minute coordination for the Hong Kong call next week. You know how it is."

I didn't know how it was. I used to work two jobs at once and never brought either of them to the dinner table. But I nodded.

"I need to run out," he said, already reaching for his jacket. "One of the junior analysts screwed up a report. I told Raymond I'd fix it before tomorrow."

"On Christmas Eve?"

"It's the job, Kath." He kissed the top of my head without meeting my eyes. "I'll be back in an hour."

The door closed. The lock clicked. I sat there looking at the silver bracelet and listening to the mechanical cheerfulness of Bing Crosby.

Then I opened our banking app.

I wasn't looking for anything. Or maybe I was looking for the explanation that would make sense of the kiss that didn't land and the call he wouldn't take in front of me and the year of small distances I'd been telling myself were normal.

I scrolled past our joint checking account—groceries, utilities, the usual—and opened the credit card statement.

There.

Venmo. Recurring payments, twice a month, labeled "rent utilities." Flowing to a name I didn't recognize at an address I did.

Our old apartment. The Brooklyn studio we'd shared when Gavin was still broke and I was working doubles to cover his application fees. The one he told me we sold three years ago to help with the down payment on this place.

I stared at the screen. My hand was steady. My breath was steady. I scrolled back six months. Twelve months. Eighteen.

The payments went back two years.

I set the phone down. I straightened my wine glass. Picked it up. Set it down again in exactly the same spot.

Then I stood up, got my coat, and walked out the door.

The drive to Brooklyn was quiet. No traffic on Christmas Eve. I parked on the street outside the building and looked up at the third-floor window. The lights were on. I could see a wreath on the door.

I climbed the stairs.

The door to 3B—*our* old door—had a new coat of paint. I stood in front of it for a moment, listening. Music. A child laughing. A woman's voice, low and warm.

I knocked.

The woman who answered was older than me. Maybe forty-two. Dark hair pulled back. She was wearing a Tiffany necklace and matching earrings I recognized from our credit card statement—the charge Gavin told me was a client gift.

She had a toddler on her hip.

The boy looked at me with Gavin's eyes.

I didn't say anything. Neither did she. She just stood there holding the door open, one eyebrow raised, like she'd been expecting me eventually and was mildly curious how long it would take.

I heard his voice before I saw him. "Teresa, who—"

Gavin came around the corner and froze.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Then he stepped between me and the woman—*Teresa*—and put his hand up like I was the one who didn't belong there.

"Katherine." His voice was too loud. "This isn't—you're misreading this."

I looked past him at the remodeled apartment. New furniture. Baby toys on the floor. A high chair by the kitchen table.

"I'm helping a colleague," Gavin said. "Teresa's going through a rough time and I—"

"She works at your building," I said quietly.

He blinked.

"She's the night janitor. I've seen her before."

Teresa smiled. It was small and sharp and said everything Gavin was trying not to.

I looked at the boy again. At his eyes. At the way he was resting his head on her shoulder.

Then I turned and walked back down the stairwell.

Gavin called after me. I didn't stop.

I got in my car, sat in the driver's seat, and pulled out my phone. I scrolled through my contacts until I found the name I needed.

Daniel Cho. The family attorney. The man my father trusted with everything that mattered.

I called him.

He answered on the third ring. "Katherine?"

"I need a private investigator," I said. My voice was steady. Calm. "Someone discreet. Someone fast."

There was a pause. Then: "I'll text you a name in five minutes."

"Thank you."

I hung up. Started the engine. Drove home.

When I got back to the apartment, I sat at the kitchen counter with my leather notebook and wrote down everything I could remember. Every charge. Every Venmo payment. Every lie about the sale of the Brooklyn property.

I wrote in clean, tight columns.

When I was finished, I checked my phone. Daniel had sent the name and number.

I booked the appointment for December 26th.

Then I went to bed, lay on my side of the mattress, and stared at the ceiling until the sky started to turn gray.

I didn't sleep.
