Chapter 1 of You Swapped My Children, So Why Is Your Rival Calling Me His Family

I thought my daughter died the night I gave birth.

For six years, I poured everything I had into the son who survived.

Then he fell in the hospital, and one blood test destroyed my entire marriage.

He wasn't mine.

He was my husband's son with his mistress.

And the little girl living inside that mistress's house, calling her Mommy?

She was mine.

My husband stole my daughter, gave me his lover's son, and expected me to smile while that boy inherited fifteen percent of his family's billion-dollar empire.

So I exposed every DNA test at his seventh birthday party.

That was when my husband's greatest rival caught my wrist and whispered, "Don't go home with him."

I thought the nightmare ended there.

Then I found the death certificate for my newborn son.

No footprints.

No cremation record.

No body.

My daughter was stolen.

And apparently, my son never died.

The vanilla cake sat on the kitchen counter, frosted with pale blue icing and topped with six tiny silver race cars.

Beside it, five framed photographs lined the breakfast bar. One for every year of Noah’s life. In the first, he was a red-faced newborn swimming in an oversized onesie. In the fifth, he was grinning with chocolate smeared across his cheeks, holding my hand at the zoo.

I adjusted the sixth frame, leaving it empty for tonight's picture.

"Mommy! Look how fast my new shoes are!"

Noah’s voice echoed from the top of the stairs, followed by the patter of small feet. Before I could turn to tell him not to run on the hardwood, there was a terrible thud, a sharp cry, and the sickening sound of a small body tumbling down the steps.

"Noah!"

The ceramic plate in my hands shattered on the floor. I rushed to the foyer, dropping to my knees beside him. Noah lay crumpled at the base of the staircase, his forehead split open and bleeding onto the rug, his eyes rolling back.

"Noah, baby, look at Mommy. Stay with me."

My hands shook violently as I dialed 911 with one hand and pressed a tea towel against his head with the other. I dialed Ryan next, five times in a row. Every single call went straight to voicemail.

The sirens wailed in the driveway two minutes later. I climbed into the back of the ambulance, gripping Noah’s limp, cold hand all the way to St. Jude’s Memorial, sobbing into his knuckles while the paramedics worked on his vitals.

At the hospital, they rushed him straight into trauma. I paced the hallway outside, my clothes stained with his blood, repeatedly checking my dead screen. Ryan still hadn't called back.

Forty minutes later, the trauma surgeon, Dr. Miller, walked out with a chart in his hands.

"Is he going to be okay?" I asked, my voice cracking. "Please tell me he's okay."

"The skull fracture is stable, but he has internal bleeding near his spleen," Dr. Miller said, pulling down his mask. "We need to take him into surgery to repair it. Before we do, I need to clarify a discrepancy on his intake panel. We pulled his type for the blood transfusion."

"He's my son," I said quickly. "Whatever blood he needs, take mine. I'm type O."

Dr. Miller gave me a puzzled look. "Mrs. Holloway, Noah is type AB. An O-type mother cannot produce an AB child under any circumstances. Did you use an egg donor during fertility treatments?"

The fluorescent lights in the corridor seemed to flare. The air caught in my throat.

"What did you say?"

"A biological mother with type O blood only passes down an O allele," Dr. Miller explained gently. "A child with type AB blood must inherit an A from one parent and a B from the other. It’s genetically impossible for Noah to be your biological child."

"No," I whispered, shaking my head. "That’s impossible. I carried him for thirty-nine weeks. I had an emergency C-section right here in this hospital."

"Claire!"

Ryan’s voice cut through the corridor. He was breathless, his tie askew and his jacket slung over one arm. He rushed up to us, his face pale. "How is he? What happened?"

"He has internal bleeding, Mr. Holloway," Dr. Miller said. "And I was just asking your wife about the blood match. Noah is type AB, but she is type O—"

Ryan’s expression didn't show confusion. It hardened instantly into panic, his jaw clenching so tight the muscle twitched.

"That's a clerical error," Ryan interrupted, stepping between me and the doctor. "Your lab made a mistake."

"Mr. Holloway, we ran it twice—"

"I don't care what you ran," Ryan snarled, his voice dropping into a harsh, commanding tone. "Seal the lab results. Put a privacy lock on this entire chart immediately. No one touches his records without my written consent. Do you understand me?"

I stared at my husband. There was no relief in his eyes that our son was alive, no shock at the doctor’s words. Only frantic damage control.

"Ryan?" I said, my voice trembling. "Why are you telling him to lock the records?"

"Because hospitals screw up all the time, Claire, and we don't have time for their gross incompetence while our son is bleeding," he snapped, turning on his heel. "Sign the surgical consent, Doctor. Now."

While Ryan followed Dr. Miller toward the nursing station to watch him enter the privacy override, my stomach churned with a cold, sickening dread.

I walked over to the chair where I had dropped Noah’s small blue backpack. My hands were steady now, driven by a quiet, freezing terror. I unzipped the side pocket, found the spare travel toothbrush we kept in his emergency kit, wrapped it in a clean paper towel, and slipped it into my purse.

The surgery lasted three hours. When Noah was finally wheeled into recovery, stable and sleeping, Ryan stayed by the edge of the bed for less than ten minutes before his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen, went rigid, and walked out into the dimly lit hallway.

I followed silently, stopping just around the corner by the supply alcove.

Ryan held the phone to his ear, his back turned to me. The caller ID on the screen had briefly flashed the name *Daniel*, but when Ryan answered, the voice coming through the receiver was unmistakable.

It was a woman, frantic and breathless, loud enough to pierce the quiet hall.

"Ryan, tell me right now!" she pleaded, her voice breaking into sobs. "Is my son okay? Tell me he’s alive!"

"Keep your voice down," Ryan hissed into the phone, checking over his shoulder. I shrank back against the wall. "He’s out of surgery. He's stable, Vanessa."

"I can't just sit here," the woman cried. "I need to see him!"

"You stay where you are," Ryan warned. "Claire is here. If she suspects anything, we lose everything."

I pressed my back against the cold wall, my chest burning so violently I could barely draw air.

The next morning, while Ryan went to the cafeteria, I paid an expedited fee at a private genetic diagnostic lab three blocks from the hospital. I handed over my cheek swab along with Noah’s toothbrush.

By four that afternoon, the encrypted PDF arrived on my phone.

*Probability of Maternity: 0.00%.*

*The tested female is excluded as the biological mother of the child.*

On my phone, I pulled up the comparative profile from the paternity test Ryan had quietly submitted through his family lawyer four years ago—a document I had discovered that morning buried in our digital family legal folder.

Ryan was Noah’s biological father. A 99.99% match.

I stood in the hospital bathroom, staring into the mirror. For six years, I had kissed scraped knees, stayed awake through fevers, baked every birthday cake, and loved a little boy with every piece of my soul.

And Ryan had known all along that he wasn't mine.

I didn't scream. I didn't confront him. I walked out of the bathroom, told Ryan I needed to run home to shower and pack clean clothes for Noah, and walked out to my car.

I didn't drive home.

I waited in the parking garage until Ryan came down twenty minutes later, got into his sedan, and pulled out onto the main road.

I followed him at a distance of three cars, trailing him through the city and into the affluent, gated neighborhood of Crestview Hills. He pulled into the circular driveway of a modern white villa surrounded by manicured hedges.

I parked fifty yards down the street beneath the shade of an oak tree.

Ryan stepped out of his car. The front door of the house swung open, and a tall, elegant brunette—Vanessa—walked out onto the porch, her face lined with worry.

Before Ryan could reach the steps, a little girl burst through the front door.

She was about six years old, wearing a yellow sundress, her dark brown hair tied in two messy pigtails.

"Daddy!" the little girl squealed, running across the lawn and throwing her small arms around Ryan’s legs.

Ryan bent down, lifting her into his arms with an easy, practiced warmth.

I sat frozen behind the steering wheel, lifting my phone and zooming the camera lens all the way in on the child's face.

The girl turned her head toward the sun, laughing.

Right above her left eyebrow, clearly visible against her pale skin, sat a small, pale pink birthmark in the distinct shape of a crescent moon.

My hand moved involuntarily to my own forehead, touching the identical crescent moon birthmark above my left brow.

A wave of dizzying nausea hit me as the horrific truth locked into place.

The boy I had raised for six years belonged to the woman on that porch.

And that woman was raising my daughter.
