Chapter 4

I stared at my phone for what felt like hours, Lincoln's advice echoing in my mind: "Catch them committing a federal crime." The best way to do that was to lure them into a trap of their own making.

Taking a deep breath, I dialed Colton's number, my finger hovering over the call button for a moment before I pressed it. Three rings, then his voice—smooth, confident, and utterly false.

"Magnolia," he said, as if we were still engaged. "I was just about to call you."

I forced a tremor into my voice. "Colton, I... I've been thinking about everything that's happened."

"Have you?" His tone shifted subtly, interest piqued by what he perceived as weakness.

"I've been under so much stress lately," I continued, channeling every acting skill I possessed. "The hormones, the wedding planning... I wasn't thinking clearly."

Silence stretched between us, and I could almost see him calculating his next move.

"Maggie," he finally said, his voice softening into the gentle persuasion that had once made me feel cherished. "I understand. We all make mistakes when we're overwhelmed."

"I want to make it right," I whispered, hating myself for the lie but knowing it was necessary. "I want to resume our wedding plans."

I heard his sharp intake of breath—surprise quickly masked by triumph.

"Really?" he asked, though I could hear the smile in his voice. "Are you sure?"

"Completely," I replied, my grip tightening on the phone. "But I want it to be quick. In the Hamptons, next month."

"The Hamptons?" His voice rose slightly. "But that's only four weeks away."

"I know," I said, injecting desperation into my tone. "I just want this behind us. I want to start our life together properly."

I could practically hear the wheels turning in his mind—the Ross fortune, the Hamptons estate, the social connections all within his grasp again.

"Of course, darling," he agreed, his voice dripping with false concern. "Whatever makes you happy."

"Try this one," the bridal consultant said, holding up a slinky silk dress that would never be appropriate for a bridesmaid.

Skyla stood in the center of the boutique's private fitting room, surrounded by mirrors that reflected her pale face from every angle. Her eyes darted nervously to the door where my bodyguard waited.

"Just the two of us," I assured her, dismissing the consultant with a wave. "I need to speak with you privately."

The moment we were alone, I locked the door and turned to face her.

"Why did you really take the money?" I asked, holding up my phone with the Venmo screenshot displayed.

Skyla's carefully constructed facade crumbled instantly. Her hands began to shake as she reached for the dress rack to steady herself.

"You wanted me to get angry, didn't you?" I continued, stepping closer. "You wanted to force a confrontation."

Tears welled in her eyes, but she remained silent.

"Because you couldn't bear to see another woman destroyed by that family," I finished for her.

Something broke in her then—a dam of fear and pain that had been holding back years of abuse. She collapsed onto the small velvet bench, her shoulders heaving with sobs.

"He starts with them when they're fourteen," she whispered between gasping breaths. "Just like he did with me."

My blood ran cold as she continued, revealing the grooming, the threats, the years of systematic abuse that had begun when she was just a child.

"He told me he'd do the same to you," she said, wiping tears from her cheeks. "The same cycle—isolate you, control you, take everything from you."

"Why didn't you run?" I asked gently.

"Where would I go?" She laughed bitterly. "They'd find me. They always do."

---

The night air was crisp as Lincoln and I sat in his study, surrounded by laptops and external drives. Skyla's cloud storage account was open on the main screen, revealing years of meticulously organized files.

"Play this one," Lincoln suggested, pointing to a dated folder labeled "Carjacking."

I clicked the file, and Colton's voice filled the room:

"Make sure the timing is perfect," he instructed someone. "I need to be the hero when it happens."

Another voice responded: "We'll be ready with the weapons—props, of course. You'll come in just as she's about to be forced into the car."

"That's when I'll save her," Colton confirmed. "She'll be so grateful, she'll never question anything I do."

My stomach churned as the recording continued, detailing how they'd staged my kidnapping three years ago—the one that had first brought Colton into my life.

"There's more," Skyla had told me before leaving. "Much more."

And she was right. As we scrolled through the files, each one revealed another layer of the Turner family's corruption—Mr. Turner planning the staged carjacking, Colton admitting to paying the actors, both parents discussing how to manipulate me into marriage.

"They've been planning this for years," Lincoln murmured, his expression grim as he copied another file to our secure server.

I nodded, a cold determination settling over me. "Then we'll need to be ready for whatever they try next."

Chapter 5

The small recording device felt like a weight in my palm as I passed it to Skyla in the restaurant's bathroom. Her hands trembled slightly as she took it, her eyes darting nervously toward the door.

"It's easy to use," I explained, showing her the simple button. "Just make sure it's recording when you start talking to them."

Skyla nodded, her face pale but determined. "I know what I need to do."

I squeezed her shoulder gently. "You don't have to do this, Skyla. We have enough evidence already."

"No," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I need to hear her admit it. I need her to say what she did to me."

The restaurant was busy enough to provide cover but quiet enough for the recording to work. Lincoln had chosen it carefully—a mid-range place in Queens where the Turner family would feel comfortable but not suspicious.

---

"Mom, can I ask you something?" Skyla's voice was carefully casual as she speared a piece of salad with her fork.

Mrs. Turner looked up from her menu, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. "What is it, dear?"

The recording device captured every word as Skyla leaned forward slightly. "Do you remember when I was fourteen? When Colton first..."

"Oh, Skyla," Mrs. Turner's voice dropped to a warning tone. "Not now."

"Why not?" Skyla pressed, her voice carrying just the right note of vulnerability. "You've always told me to be quiet about it."

I watched from the adjacent booth as Mrs. Turner's face tightened. "Some things are better left in the past."

"But you knew," Skyla whispered, her voice breaking perfectly. "You knew what he was doing to me."

The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken truths.

"Of course I knew," Mrs. Turner finally hissed, leaning forward to keep her voice low. "But what was I supposed to do? He's my son. We had plans for this family."

"So you kept quiet," Skyla said, her voice hollow. "For the family's future."

"Everything we've built is for all of us," Mrs. Turner replied, glancing around to ensure no one was listening. "Including you, Skyla. Once Colton marries Magnolia, we'll all benefit."

The recording captured it all—the admission, the justification, the complete lack of remorse.

---

"Have you seen Page Six this morning?" Lincoln asked, sliding his tablet across the breakfast table to me.

I picked it up, scanning the headline: "ROSS HEIRESS AND TURNER HEIR MORE IN LOVE THAN EVER - BILLION-DOLLAR MERGER OF ASSETS IMMINENT"

"Oh my God," I breathed, taking in the fabricated story complete with photoshopped images of Colton and me looking affectionate. "How did you manage this?"

Lincoln's lips curved into a slight smile. "I have connections at the Post. They were happy to run the story in exchange for exclusive coverage of the wedding."

"But the quotes..." I traced my finger over the fabricated statements attributed to Colton about our "unbreakable bond" and "shared vision for the future."

"Easily obtained through a shell email account," Lincoln explained, his tone casual as if orchestrating media deception was an everyday occurrence. "The Turners will believe they're about to get everything they've ever wanted."

And they did. By afternoon, my phone was buzzing with messages from Mrs. Turner about wedding details, and Colton had already posted the article on his social media with captions about "fate" and "destiny."

"They're so desperate to believe it," I observed, watching Colton's post rack up likes from his equally shallow friends.

"Desperate enough to sign this," Lincoln said, producing a folder containing the pre-nuptial agreement drafts his lawyers had prepared—documents designed to look standard but containing clauses that would trap the Turners legally.

---

The night before the wedding, I stood at the window of my Hamptons suite, watching the waves crash against the shore below. Tomorrow would change everything.

A soft knock at my door broke my reverie.

"Room service," called a voice I didn't recognize.

I frowned, having ordered nothing. Through the peephole, I saw Colton standing there with a bottle of champagne.

"Go away, Colton," I called through the door.

"Come on, Maggie," he insisted. "It's our last night before we're married."

Before I could respond, another voice intervened—Lincoln's, calm and authoritative.

"Mr. Turner," he said, appearing in the hallway behind Colton. "You shouldn't be here."

Colton spun around, his face darkening when he saw Lincoln. "Who the hell are you to tell me where I can go?"

"Hotel security," Lincoln replied smoothly, though his tailored suit and commanding presence hardly matched the description.

Colton laughed, stepping closer to Lincoln. "You're just jealous, aren't you? Can't stand that I'm marrying Magnolia tomorrow."

Lincoln didn't flinch. Instead, he glanced at his watch with deliberate slowness.

"Enjoy your last night of freedom, Mr. Turner," he said quietly.

Colton's smile faltered for just a moment before he recovered, pushing past Lincoln toward the elevator.

As he disappeared, I opened my door to find Lincoln standing there, his expression unreadable.

"Is everything ready?" I asked.

He nodded once, his eyes meeting mine with intensity. "Everything is in place."

Tomorrow would indeed change everything.
