My Groom Planned My Fake Kidnapping to Win My Trust Summary
Chapter 1 of My Groom Planned My Fake Kidnapping to Win My Trust
The Manhattan skyline glittered against the night sky, a perfect backdrop for what should have been the happiest night of my life. Our engagement party at the Skyline Rooftop venue was everything I'd dreamed of—champagne flowing freely, New York's elite mingling in their finest attire, and Colton by my side, his arm possessively wrapped around my waist.
"I want to show everyone how much you mean to me," Colton whispered, his breath warm against my ear. "Watch this."
He pulled out his phone, and I watched as he typed something in the Turner family group chat. A moment later, my phone buzzed with a notification.
"A Venmo transfer?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Five-twenty," he said with a wink. "I love you."
My heart swelled. It was such a small gesture compared to the millions I'd spent on his failed startups over the years, but it was the thought that counted. I reached for my phone to accept the transfer, but before I could click the button, another notification appeared.
"Skyla has claimed the payment."
I looked up to see Colton's adopted sister across the room, her red lips curved into a smile as she held up her phone in acknowledgment.
"Skyla," I called out, my voice carrying across the suddenly quieting room. "That was meant for me."
The music seemed to fade as all eyes turned toward us.
"Oh, I didn't realize," Skyla said, her voice dripping with false innocence. "It's just... five hundred and twenty dollars isn't much to someone like you, Magnolia."
"It's not about the amount," I replied, feeling heat rise to my cheeks. "It's the gesture."
Skyla's eyes welled up with tears. "I'm sorry, I just thought..."
Before I could respond, Mrs. Turner swooped in, her diamond earrings catching the light as she placed a protective arm around her daughter.
"Magnolia, dear," she said, her voice loud enough for nearby guests to hear, "surely you're not going to make a scene over pocket change? Especially someone of your... means."
The word 'means' hung in the air like an accusation. I felt dozens of eyes on me, judging, wondering if the Ross heiress was really so petty.
---
"Are you embarrassed by me?" Colton hissed, pulling me into the coat check room minutes later. I'd expected comfort, perhaps an apology for his sister's behavior.
Instead, his eyes were cold, his jaw clenched tight.
"What?" I asked, genuinely confused.
"This whole thing," he spat, waving his hand dismissively. "Making Skyla feel bad about five hundred dollars. Do you know how that makes me look?"
I stared at him, trying to process his words. "Colton, she took your transfer to me. The one that said 'I love you.'"
"And you couldn't just let it go?" His voice rose slightly. "You have billions, Magnolia. Billions. And you're materialistic enough to embarrass my sister over nothing?"
"Materialistic?" I repeated, the word stinging like a slap.
"Yes, materialistic," he insisted. "You need to apologize to Skyla. Right now."
I shook my head, not believing what I was hearing. "No."
"No?" His eyes widened. "Magnolia, you're being ridiculous. Apologize to her, and send her something nice. Five thousand should do it."
Five thousand dollars. As an apology. For his sister taking a sentimental gesture meant for me.
Something inside me snapped.
---
The rooftop was still buzzing with conversation when I returned, but I could feel the undercurrent of gossip. They were all watching, waiting to see how this little drama would play out.
I walked directly to the DJ booth and quietly requested the microphone. The music faded, and all eyes turned to me as I stepped onto the small platform.
"I have an announcement to make," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos in my mind. The room fell silent.
Colton appeared at the edge of the crowd, his expression shifting from confusion to alarm.
"I'm afraid this engagement party has been a bit premature," I continued. "Colton and I have discovered some irreconcilable financial and moral differences that cannot be overlooked."
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Mrs. Turner's champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the floor.
"So," I concluded, placing the microphone back on its stand, "I apologize for any inconvenience, but the engagement is off."
Without looking at Colton's face, I walked steadily toward the exit, ignoring his calls behind me.
---
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the windows of my penthouse as I sat at my desk, laptop open in front of me. My finger hovered over the send button of an email I'd drafted through the night.
"Colton Turner," it began formally, "This letter serves as official notice of demand for immediate repayment of the sum of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) loaned to you on March 15, 2023..."
Attached was the contract he'd signed, thinking I'd never enforce it.
I clicked send, then leaned back in my chair, watching as the confirmation appeared on screen.
"Message sent."
It was done. The first move had been made.
