Chapter 1 of My Fiancé Gave My Research to His Mistress

The bus dropped me at the north terminal just after dawn. I stepped onto the pavement and felt Seattle's damp air settle on my skin like a memory I'd been trying to hold onto for three years.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my left wrist. The gesture was automatic now. I didn't even notice I was doing it until my nail caught the ridge of tissue where the field scalpel had slipped during that emergency tracheotomy in month fourteen. The patient lived. The scar stayed.

My canvas satchel hung heavy on my shoulder. Inside were seven notebooks — handwritten, dated, cross-referenced — containing every data point from the Appalachian clinical trial. Three years of work. Lives that could be saved if the protocols were implemented correctly. I'd carried them through rainstorms and power outages and one very close call with a flooded creek. They were coming home with me intact.

I caught my reflection in a storefront window as I walked. The woman looking back was thinner than I remembered. My jacket hung loose at the shoulders. My boots were scuffed pale at the toes. I'd stopped wearing makeup sometime in year two, when the humidity made everything slide off by noon anyway. But my hair was clean. My hands were steady. And I was here.

I was finally here.

The walk to Howell Memorial took forty minutes. I could have called a car, but I wanted the time. I needed to settle into the city again, let the noise and the traffic and the coffee shops remind my body where it was. I rehearsed what I'd say to Dean. I'd kept it simple in my head. *I'm back. I missed you. Let me show you what we built.*

The hospital rose ahead of me, all stone and glass and the kind of architectural confidence that only old money could buy. I'd walked through those doors a hundred times before Appalachia. I knew the security desk. I knew the elevator banks. I knew which vending machine on the third floor dispensed the least terrible coffee.

I smoothed my jacket. Shifted the satchel higher on my shoulder. And smiled.

The entrance was busier than I expected for this hour. A cluster of residents in scrubs stood near the doors, talking in the low, urgent way residents always talked. A few administrative staff moved past with badges swinging. I stepped toward the glass doors and felt something in my chest finally exhale.

A uniformed security guard moved into my path.

I stopped. Blinked. I didn't recognize him. That wasn't unusual — the hospital employed dozens of security staff, and I'd been gone three years. But something about the way he positioned himself, shoulders squared, made my smile falter.

"Can I help you?" His voice was polite. His body language was not.

"I'm Dr. Howell," I said. "I'm here to see—"

"Dr. Howell isn't on the schedule today." He didn't move.

I felt the first prickle of confusion. "No, I'm Dr. Howell. Amaris Howell. I've been on assignment, but I'm back now, and I need to—"

The glass doors opened behind him.

A woman stepped through. Sharp blazer. Heels that clicked on the pavement like punctuation. Dark hair pulled back so tight it looked like it hurt. She surveyed me the way you'd survey something unpleasant you'd found on your shoe.

"I don't know who told you this was a public shelter," she said, loud enough that the residents turned to look, "but the Vice Chair's partner handles hospital access. You're not on any list."

I stared at her. The words didn't connect at first. They were in English, but the meaning slid past me like water.

"I'm sorry," I said slowly. "I think there's been a mistake. I'm a physician here. I've been on a field assignment for—"

"Cayson." The woman didn't look at me when she spoke. She looked at the guard. "Remove her from the premises."

The guard — Cayson — turned toward me.

And stopped.

His face changed. Something moved behind his eyes. Recognition, sharp and immediate. His mouth opened slightly. He looked at me the way you look at someone you know. Someone you remember.

I looked back.

I knew him too. Not his name. But his face. The waiting room. The little girl with the swollen airway. The forty minutes on the floor with a makeshift airway kit while the attending was in surgery. The father who held his daughter's hand and said *thank you* seventeen times.

This was that father.

Cayson's eyes met mine. One second. Maybe two.

Then his jaw tightened. His shoulders reset. And he reached for my arm.

"Ma'am," he said quietly. "I need you to leave the property."

My satchel slipped an inch down my shoulder. I caught it. Held it against my ribs.

"Cayson," I said. My voice sounded strange. "It's me."

He didn't answer. His hand closed around my elbow. Not rough. But firm.

The woman in the blazer smiled.
