Chapter 3
Eddie's cold and ruthless voice awakened Ruth, who was sleeping.
She waved her little hands anxiously and started crying.
"Mommy... Mommy..."
She was so young, and the sound she made was not much different from that of a helpless animal cub.
My heart softened, and I quickly picked her up.
Eddie ignored us and went straight to pick up a call from Angela.
"Honey, since you're not here, I can't even find my slippers. The floor is so cold when I walk!"
Angela's affected complaints came from the other end of the line.
Eddie, who found Ruth's crying unbearable, instantly softened his expression.
"How could you not see them? They're at..."
As he spoke, he walked outside.
It started raining at some point.
But that didn't stop Eddie from going out at all.
He was like a hero, rushing to save the love of his life.
And I could only smile bitterly, letting pain and sorrow engulf me.
After the show today, Angela found me and shared her alternate account with me.
She couldn't understand my lost and confused expression when I heard Eddie's voice from her earpiece.
With a disdainful look on her face, she asked me, "Gloria, what kind of expression was that?
"I've been with Eddie for over two years. Don't tell me this is the first time you've known about me."
I looked bewildered, and she directly showed me her alternate account.
"See for yourself. Eddie loves me very much. Even though you gave birth to his child, he still loves me only!"
Angela was extremely cruel. On the alternate account were many things about Eddie that I didn't know.
Two years ago in May, she said.
"My boyfriend loves me so much! When I said I wanted to eat lychees, he peeled a full bag of lychees for me! His hands were red!"
Last winter, she said, "When I was crossing the road, a drunk driver ran a red light. I almost got hit! Luckily, my boyfriend showed up in time and protected me!"
Half a year ago, she said, "My boyfriend is so stupid. I said I didn't want to have children, so he let me hold someone else's for a while. I was joking, OK? For him, I can have a hundred children!"
Angela's words were vivid. Looking at those words, I cried before I realized it.
What made me even more devastated was that Angela seemed to be worried that words alone were not persuasive enough.
Under the post about children, she deliberately posted a photo.
Ruth's face was pinched by her sharp manicure, and Ruth was crying miserably.
I was Ruth's mother, and I had no idea when Eddie took her away!
I was upset and restless all night.
And Ruth suddenly had a high fever as if she shared my emotions.
Eddie drove away the only car in the villa.
I carried Ruth downstairs, wanting to take her to the hospital, but the housekeeper stopped me.
"Mrs. Ford, Mr. Ford said you couldn't go anywhere without his permission."
Eddie went to see Angela while trapping me here.
I was full of sadness. I laughed coldly and cried uncontrollably.
Ruth's fever was severe, and no matter what I tried, her body temperature was still high.
Helpless, I went to the housekeeper again.
"Ruth is sick. I have to take her to the hospital. If you're afraid I'll run away, you can send someone to follow me."
The housekeeper was very stubborn. "Mrs. Ford, sorry. I don't have Mr. Ford's permission."
He suggested that I should call Eddie.
But after the phone rang for a long time, it was finally answered, and Angela's voice came through.
"Gloria, now everyone is shipping me and Eddie.
"You're calling him now? Aren't you worried I'll tell everyone that you covet him and want to take him away from me?"
She thought I wanted Eddie to come home.
But I just wanted to save Ruth.
After a pause of a few seconds, I said to her as calmly as possible.
"Angela, my daughter is sick. Give the phone to Eddie now. Tell his men to let me go!"
"Go?" Angela sneered. "Gloria, if you were willing to leave, you wouldn't have stayed at the Ford family for seven years.
"I know exactly what you're thinking. This is your way of keeping Eddie around!"
She was about to hang up.
I could only stop her and beg, "Angela, please believe me. I really didn't mean to ... disturb you!
"I just want to save my daughter. She's sick..."
Angela hung up the phone before I finished speaking.
Before hanging up the phone, she grinned.
"Gloria, she's sick, not dead. What's the use of pretending to be pitiful by using her as an excuse?
"Besides, even if she dies, Eddie won't leave me. We're going to do role-play tonight. I'll be the teacher, and he'll be my student."
Chapter 4
Eddie wouldn't let me leave.
I stared at the cold rain outside, wrapped Ruth and me in a blanket, and opened the window.
I heard muffled thunder, and the walls were wet from the rain.
I looked at Ruth's flushed face, took a deep breath, and climbed downstairs with her on my back.
The walls were too slippery, and I almost fell several times.
My feet touched the ground.
Instantly, I rushed to the hospital, not caring about my worn-out fingers at all.
The Ford family's villa was built halfway up the mountain.
I ran along the road for a long time. Then I finally saw a car until I lost one of my shoes.
"My girl is sick! Please! Please save her!"
The owner of the luxury car kindly took us to the hospital.
When the doctor took Ruth from my arms, his expression became serious at once.
"Get the operating room ready! Now!"
Ruth was pushed into the operating room.
Several hours passed.
The door of the operating room was opened, and the doctor came out, apologetically shaking his head at me. "Ms. Fisher, we did our best.
"The patient was premature and frail, and the prolonged high fever damaged her brain tissue.
"She has passed away."
Ruth was dead?
I felt numb. l took out my phone, my eyes hollow.
I habitually wanted to tell Eddie everything that happened.
But at that moment, I saw a new push notification from Twitter.
Five minutes ago, Angela tweeted, "I'm so stupid. I didn't even realize I was pregnant!
"My baby knight, when you come into this world, you have to protect me with Daddy and drive away all the bad guys who want to separate us!"
I saw the photo of the ultrasound image. Eddie was the father, and she was the mother.
Ruth was dead, and Eddie had another child.
I collapsed to the ground and couldn't breathe.
Why?
Angela's baby is envied by everyone for having a beautiful mom and a rich dad.
But Ruth, my girl, is lying alone on the cold bed.
She used to be soft, warm, and cute. But now, she's stiff, cold, and dead.
Why?
My heart ached, but I couldn't shed a tear at all.
I followed the doctor's instructions and obtained a death certificate for her.
Then I took her body to the crematorium and put her ashes in a small jar. It was all that was left of her in this world.
After seeing the online news on the internet, Regina Sutton, Eddie's mom, hurried back from France.
She found me in Eddie's villa.
She wanted to say something to me.
But when she saw me trying to stick Ruth's photo onto the urn, she couldn't say a word.
"How could this be?" Her eyelashes trembled, and she hurriedly called Eddie to come back.
Yet he wasn't the only one who came back. Angela tagged along.
"Regina, Eddie tells me you like puppies.
"I picked this puppy for you. Do you like it?"
Angela's face was full of flattery, and she was about to stuff the puppy into Regina's arms.
But Regina pulled a long face and ignored her.
"Eddie, what were you doing last night? Do you know..."
She wanted to tell Eddie Ruth was dead.
But before she could say anything, Angela's dog kicked over the urn I had placed on the table.
The ceramic urn fell on the marble and shattered into pieces.
Ruth's ashes were scattered everywhere.
I was extremely angry. I raised my hand and slapped Angela hard.
Eddie protected her and pushed me away.
"Gloria, are you crazy?
"So what if it's shattered? It's just a bottle. I'll buy you another one! Who gave you the right to hit her?"
Eddie was furious.
Angela smiled and held her stomach while pretending to mediate.
"Eddie, don't get upset with Gloria for me!
"I got pregnant with your baby without her consent. Of course, she hates me."
Eddie's eyes became even colder when he heard her words.
He grabbed my neck and threw me in front of Angela, coldly saying, "Gloria, it's my baby. She doesn't need your permission at all!
"Apologize to Angela now, or..."
He didn't get to finish speaking.
Regina slapped his face.
"Bastard! Do you know what's in that bottle?
"Your daughter is dead! It's her ashes in there!"
