Chapter 4

Alaric Ravenhart's face, which had remained eerily calm until now, finally showed cracks.

"Enough!" He wrenched my grip from his arm with surprising force. "If it weren't for the fact that you're Fenris's blood-nephew, I would have called for the Pack Tribunal to deal with your harassment long ago. Keep pushing me, and I won't hold back any longer!"

Elder Eamon limped forward, his weathered face creased with concern. "Kael, I understand this is difficult to accept. Your uncle must have had his reasons for this decision. You're still young—your future achievements may well rival his own. Why torment yourself like this?"

"Why torment myself?" I stared at him in disbelief. "We're not talking about a few silver coins or a small territory. This is the entire Ashenvale pack lands, the tribute networks, everything my uncle built over his lifetime. Doesn't it strike you as strange that he suddenly changed his succession decree right before his death? What hold does Alaric Ravenhart have over all of you?"

Eamon's expression hardened completely. "Suspect what, exactly? Kael, your uncle has passed beyond the veil. I expect you to honor the wishes of the dead!"

Alaric let out a cold laugh. "All this noise—you're trying to imply your uncle and I had some shameful bond, aren't you? Kael Stormshadow, he was your own blood. How dare you smear his memory like this?"

Heat rushed to my face instantly, the burning shame of being exposed.

The servants and the pack healer standing nearby turned their gazes on me, their eyes filled with open contempt.

"All those pretty words, and he's just bitter about losing his claim. He'd drag his own uncle's name through the mud for territory rights—shameless!"

"If you ask me, his uncle probably saw through him long ago. Knew he was nothing but an ungrateful pup. That's why he didn't pass the pack to him."

"Alpha Fenris raised him for twenty years, treated him like his own son. And this is how he repays him? Slander after death. The Alpha deserved better."

"Disgusting! A greedy, faithless cur. Get out—don't dirty our den with your presence!"

One of the servants grabbed a broom and swept furiously at my feet, driving me toward the entrance of the great hall.

Waves of humiliation and grief crashed over me. My eyes burned red as I swept my gaze across the room, my voice breaking.

"I'm not doing this for the inheritance! I just want to understand why my uncle did this. Did something force his hand? Was it something I did wrong? Were these twenty years of bond between us—father and son in all but blood—were they all lies?"

"Even if the truth turns out to be that this was truly his wish, I'll accept it willingly. I just can't bear living in this fog of confusion, powerless to understand anything!"

Tears fell despite my efforts to hold them back. Elder Eamon hobbled over to me, looked into my face, and let out a heavy sigh.

"Kael, don't let your mind run wild. If your uncle didn't love you, why would he have set aside a substantial heir-seal trust for you?"

I froze, suddenly remembering the words my uncle had whispered to me on his deathbed.

"Kael, I've placed a significant sum in an heir-seal trust for you. Don't touch it unless you have no other choice. The blood-key... only the true heir knows it..."

I had been too consumed by grief at the time to grasp the meaning behind those words.

I had assumed he was simply leaving me a safety net in case I failed to manage the pack's affairs properly.

Now I understood—my uncle had been preparing for something.

My gaze cut toward Alaric Ravenhart like a blade, my voice carrying the weight of someone who had nothing left to lose.

"Alaric Ravenhart, one last time. Come with me to the Neutral Custodian House. Prove to me whether you're truly the rightful heir!"

He stared at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable and complex. Then he let out a soft scoff. "Fine. I'll go with you. But if it's proven that I am the lawful heir, then you, Kael Stormshadow, must never appear before me again!"

I nodded without hesitation. "Agreed."

We made our way to the Neutral Custodian House and sought out Sabine Goldvein, the Custodian of Seals.

She carefully retrieved a warded lockbox, her movements precise and reverent as she explained, "This lockbox contains the documents for the heir-seal trust that Alpha Fenris established for Kael Stormshadow during his lifetime, along with a trust seal-token. The blood-key for withdrawals and the scent-key for this lockbox are known only to the true heir."

He made a courteous gesture toward Alaric Ravenhart. "Please proceed, Alpha Ravenhart."

Alaric approached the warded lockbox, his head turning left to glance behind him, then tilting right, confirming no one stood at his back.

He extended his left hand, his smallest finger raised, while his forefinger pressed against the blood-key runes.

The seal emitted a series of soft pulses, and everyone's hearts tightened with each quickening beat.

My palms gathered sweat, and the heart within my chest seemed ready to leap free.

My lips kept silently repeating the words: The key will fail.

I couldn't be wrong. Uncle Fenris must have had reasons he couldn't speak of. This Alaric Ravenhart had to be a false heir. Uncle Fenris loved me.

Soon now. The truth would be revealed any moment. The deceiver would be exposed.

Uncle Fenris, your life's work—I can protect it for you...

As the final rune accepted his touch, the air seemed to freeze completely.

Everyone held their breath, afraid to miss the most crucial moment.

A soft chime sounded.

The warded lockbox's seal clicked and released.

The blood in my entire body turned to ice in an instant. A roaring filled my ears.

Around me, voices praising "Alpha Ravenhart truly is the heir" and "Alpha Ravenhart, please remember us lowly wolves" drifted to me in fragments.

And I stood there like a joke, pointed at and whispered about.

"He's gone mad with greed for territory. The Law-Speaker already confirmed Alpha Ravenhart as the rightful successor under pack law, but he refused to believe it. Now he's been completely humiliated, hasn't he?"

"He must have done something wicked. His parents were cursed to death because of him, and now even his own uncle doesn't want him. It's fate's punishment!"

"He simply doesn't have the blood-right. Why even fight for it? Accept your lot!"

I stood frozen in place like stone, my whole body trembling without cease.

How could this be?

How could this happen?

Great-uncle Eamon bore witness for someone he'd never met. Uncle Fenris's desperate determination when he made his mark. Entrusting his most secret blood-key to this stranger.

All the evidence proved Alaric Ravenhart was the lawful heir.

Who exactly was Alaric Ravenhart?

No—wait!

Something must have been overlooked.

My mind churned into chaos.

Just then, the rogue tracker sent me his investigation findings on Alaric Ravenhart.

I opened the message and read it, then suddenly lifted my head, my gaze locking onto Alaric like iron.

"Alaric Ravenhart, I know who you really are!"
