Chapter 1

My uncle had no pups of his own, and he had long ago sworn a blood-oath will naming me heir to his vast territory and all its tributes.

But after my uncle's burial rites ended, I returned to his great den-estate, only to have a strange male burst through the doors. He claimed to be my uncle's lawful successor and demanded I leave at once.

"All of Fenris Ashenvale's holdings and territory rights pass to me. You will leave immediately!"

I refused to believe a word of it. I thought him mad—until he produced the blood-oath will.

I stared at two documents bearing identical seals, and immediately summoned the Law-Speaker.

After careful examination, the Law-Speaker looked at me with regret and shook his head. "Young Master Stormshadow, the will you hold has been voided."

My skull felt like it had been split open. Before I could even react, Alaric Ravenhart had already settled onto the great fur-draped seat. With practiced ease, he reached beneath the cushions and found the hidden cache of moon-herb cigars my uncle had secreted there. His fingers moved with familiar grace as he lit one.

I stared hard at the silhouette wreathed in pale smoke—strange and yet somehow achingly familiar—and forced the words out:

"Who are you, really?"

——

Ever since my uncle's wasting curse was diagnosed, the healers had forbidden him from smoking. Every stash in the den had been confiscated.

This hiding spot was known only to my uncle and me.

How could this stranger possibly know of it?

The male across from me wore no expression at all. He merely pointed at the name inscribed on the will.

"Can you not read? I am Alaric Ravenhart, the lawful heir to Fenris Ashenvale's estate. Now—will you leave?"

"Impossible!"

My voice cracked, nearly breaking. "This will must be forged! I demand the Law-Speaker verify its authenticity!"

Dorian Ravenhart examined the documents once more, his expression grave as he nodded. "This blood-oath will is genuine and binding. Alaric Ravenhart is indeed the lawful heir."

The expression on my face froze. I shook my head in disbelief.

"How can this be real? I am the one closest to my uncle. How could he possibly leave everything to you—an outsider?"

Alaric watched me with something like amusement playing at the corners of his mouth. "Then perhaps you should ask your uncle why he gave his territories and tributes to an outsider like me, rather than to a nephew he supposedly loved like his own pup."

I went rigid. My fingers crushed the edge of the will.

Cold sweat dripped down, one bead at a time, splattering onto the parchment. The words "Heir: Kael Stormshadow" blurred and ran beneath the moisture.

My uncle had never taken a mate. He had raised me—an orphaned pup who lost both parents when I was barely two winters old—as if I were his own blood.

I had grown up at his side. He sent me to the most prestigious training grounds for young wolves. He gave me every comfort the pack could offer.

Before I had even completed my coming-of-age trials, he brought me into the pack's inner circle to learn how territory was managed and tributes were collected. He taught me everything he knew about leading.

Despite my elder uncle's fierce opposition, he had declared all his holdings would pass to me—his sister's son—leaving not a single acre to his own nephew by blood.

Because of this, my uncle and my elder uncle had become bitter enemies.

My uncle loved me so deeply. He would never give his legacy to someone I had never once seen.

Something was wrong here. There had to be something wrong.

I forced myself to calm down and turned to the Law-Speaker. "I demand to see the recording of the will's signing."

A blood-oath will required proper witnessing—at least two Law-Speakers, a tribute-keeper, and a healer present at the ceremony.

They had to confirm the one making the oath was of sound mind, acting of free will, and that the contents truly reflected their wishes.

My uncle must have been coerced.

I fixed my gaze on Alaric, searching his face for any flicker of panic.

But his expression remained unchanged. He calmly retrieved the moon-crystal recording.

I watched without blinking, from beginning to end. My uncle's mind was perfectly clear throughout.

At the very end, when he carved his name into the binding seal, he pressed so hard the stylus tore through the parchment.

My head roared with white noise.

How could this be?

There was something hidden here. There had to be something hidden!

I lunged forward and seized Dorian Ravenhart by the collar of his robes, glaring into his eyes.

Chapter 2

"You tampered with that moon-witness recording, didn't you? Your name is Ravenhart, and so is his? You two are working together to steal my uncle's territory and succession rights!"

Dorian Ravenhart's expression shifted, but he maintained his composure. "Young Stormshadow, I understand your distress, but this was Alpha Fenris's own decision. If you harbor doubts about its validity, I suggest you petition the Pack Tribunal or request an Elder Inquiry. Violence will resolve nothing."

I released my grip on him and immediately sent word to the Pack Enforcers.

When the Tribunal Sentinels arrived, they examined the moon-witness recording with their truth-scrying abilities. They confirmed the recording was authentic—no splicing, no illusion-craft, no manipulation of any kind.

Furthermore, their investigation revealed that Dorian Ravenhart shared no blood-bond with Alaric Ravenhart whatsoever.

The two had never even crossed paths before. Today marked their first meeting.

My mind went blank.

Where had everything gone wrong?

My uncle had sealed his blood-oath will just one moon-cycle before his death. How could he have suddenly changed his intentions?

The lead Sentinel looked at my stubborn, disbelieving face and spoke in a tone that was half lecture, half mockery:

"Young wolf, perhaps look within yourself for answers. You must have failed in your duties to him. Whether it's your uncle or your own sire—if an Alpha is displeased with his heir, it's his right to bestow his territory and succession upon whomever he chooses."

A crack split through my thoughts like lightning.

My own sire?

I turned sharply toward Alaric Ravenhart, and a terrifying possibility began to take root in my mind.

I was forcibly removed from the estate I had called home for over twenty years.

As they escorted me out, I slipped away unnoticed with something Alaric had left behind—the remnants of a blood-herb pipe he'd been smoking.

The moment I passed through the territory gates, I rushed to the Healer's Hall and retrieved the blood sample my uncle had stored there. Then I went straight to the Bloodline Verification Chamber.

The wait for results stretched my nerves to breaking.

My uncle had lived his entire life with honor and restraint. Despite controlling vast territories and tribute networks, he never indulged in excess.

Apart from necessary pack gatherings and alliance meetings, he lived more austerely than a temple monk.

I racked my brain, but I couldn't imagine—didn't dare imagine—that he might have a hidden offspring.

Yet if that wasn't the case, how else could I explain why he'd rewritten his blood-oath will to name Alaric Ravenhart as heir?

After an agonizing wait, the results finally came.

The moment I saw them, my entire body turned to stone.

"No biological bloodline connection detected."

Those words pierced through me like silver-tipped blades driven straight into my heart.

My uncle had truly given away everything he'd spent his lifetime building—his vast territory, his tribute networks, his entire legacy—to a complete stranger with no blood-tie to our line?

I couldn't understand it. I truly couldn't.

Did this stranger hold some secret over my uncle? Some leverage?

But the Tribunal Sentinels had said during their inquiry that Alaric Ravenhart was merely a low-ranking member of some insignificant pack. What possible hold could such a wolf have over an Alpha of my uncle's standing?

Unless... they shared that kind of bond?

Considering my uncle's complete disinterest in taking a mate, the possibility suddenly didn't seem so impossible.

The thought nearly struck me dead where I stood.

My mind churned in chaos.

Was I supposed to simply watch as the territory that should have been mine passed into a stranger's hands?

Let my uncle's life's work be devoured by someone with no rightful claim?

I stood frozen for a long while before finally pulling out my communication stone to contact a rogue tracker I knew.

"I need you to investigate someone named Alaric Ravenhart. Go back three generations. From his birth to now—everyone he's met, every tribute he's received or given, every territory he's crossed through. Leave nothing out. The more detailed, the better. And make it fast."

After severing the connection, I sought lodging at a well-appointed traveler's den. When I tried to access my pack credit-marks, the keeper's face went cold.

"Your marks have been frozen, young wolf. I cannot honor them."

The words echoed through the empty hall like a death knell.

Only then did I remember—all my resources flowed through my uncle's authority. Now that everything had passed to Alaric Ravenhart, he would have moved immediately to cut me off.

I had no choice but to return to the small, warded hideout my grandmother Mara had left to my mother.

I had only a few silver pieces remaining in my pouch. Forget next season's training fees at the Academy—I could barely guarantee my next meal.

Chapter 3

I sat in the den that had been cleaned until not a speck of dust remained, a bitter ache swelling in my chest.

Uncle Fenris and my mother had been born together under the same moon—twins blessed by the goddess. When I was barely two winters old, a territory ambush claimed both my parents in a single bloody night.

The bond between the siblings had always run deep. Uncle Fenris could never bring himself to abandon this small hideout-den. He came often to tend it himself, running his claws gently over the worn furniture, breathing in the fading traces of her scent. He told me once that her shadow still lingered here, caught in the walls like moonlight trapped in amber.

For my sake, Uncle Fenris never took a mate. He raised me as both father and mother, his massive presence a constant shield against a world that had already taken so much from me.

He had loved me so fiercely. Why would he leave everything to a stranger?

I refused to accept it. Again and again, I watched the Moon-witness recording of the blood-oath will, certain something was wrong. Something missing.

My hand froze. My pupils contracted sharply.

I knew what it was. The recording lacked Elder Eamon—the witness who should have been present.

Elder Eamon was the most respected member of my mother's bloodline, a wolf whose word carried the weight of ancient law. Uncle Fenris had been clear: only with Elder Eamon present to witness the oath would the succession be valid.

I scrambled to find the recording of Uncle Fenris's first blood-oath will—the one that named me as heir. Elder Eamon stood right there in the image, his silver-streaked fur unmistakable.

Excitement surged through me. I leaped to my feet, already burning to expose Alaric Ravenhart for what he truly was.

I raced back to the estate and forced my way through the outer wards. I had barely crossed the threshold when Garrick Frostmane, the old den-steward, stepped into my path.

"Young master, this territory no longer belongs to you. If you continue to cause disruption, I will summon the pack enforcers."

The coldness in his voice cut deep. This was the same wolf who had once brought me warm healer's broth on winter nights, who had fussed over whether I was eating enough. Now he looked at me like I was a trespasser.

I swallowed the hurt and forced my voice steady. "I need to speak with Alaric Ravenhart. Let me pass."

"The master has already retired for the night. Return tomorrow."

I glanced at the position of the moon—barely past its first quarter rise. The night was young. Most wolves my age would just be beginning their evening hunts. Yet he had already gone to rest?

His habits were exactly like Uncle Fenris's. The same elder's schedule in a young wolf's body.

I stood vigil at the gates through the long cold hours. When dawn light finally crept across the snow, Alaric Ravenhart emerged in Uncle Fenris's personal transport—the sleek, rune-marked carriage that had always carried my uncle to council meetings.

I stepped directly into his path.

"Alaric Ravenhart. I can prove you are not the lawful successor. Come with me to see Elder Eamon—now."

Alaric regarded me with an expression caught somewhere between amusement and something else I couldn't name. To my surprise, he nodded without argument.

"Very well. I'm curious to see what proof you think you have."

We traveled to Elder Eamon's den. The moment we arrived, I couldn't contain myself.

"Elder Eamon, do you know that Uncle Fenris left his entire territory to this wolf?" I pointed at Alaric, my voice rising. "The blood-oath recording doesn't show you present. Tell me the truth—it's forged, isn't it? He coerced Uncle Fenris into this. That has to be what happened!"

Elder Eamon stared at me with undisguised bewilderment.

"I know about it, pup. Your uncle told me everything himself." He shifted his weight, and I noticed for the first time the healing wrappings around his leg. "I was supposed to attend the ceremony as witness, but there was an ambush on the territory road. My leg was shattered. Before the healers put me under for the bone-setting, I recorded a Moon-witness statement confirming the change. Did they not show it to you?"

I stood frozen, staring at the bandages.

Elder Eamon retrieved the recording. It was brief—just a few sentences—but his voice was clear and his words left no room for doubt. The revised blood-oath will was genuine.

My mind went blank.

My gaze darted between Elder Eamon and Alaric, desperate for something that made sense.

Had Elder Eamon been bought? Had this stranger somehow corrupted even him?

The accusation spilled from my lips before I could stop it: "Elder Eamon, did he pay you off? What did he offer you? How can you betray Uncle Fenris like this? How can you dishonor my dead parents?"

The elder's expression hardened. The warmth drained from his voice entirely.

"Kael, what madness are you speaking? This is the first time I have ever met this young wolf. I am old—what use would I have for bribes or territory? Everything was done according to your uncle's own wishes!"

"No!" I snarled. "Uncle Fenris would never abandon me!"

I spun around and seized Alaric by the collar of his coat, my claws threatening to extend. I glared into his face with all the fury I possessed.

"Who are you? Why would Uncle Fenris willingly give you everything? Tell me—what hold do you have over a dying wolf? What threat could possibly force him to name you his heir?"
