Chapter 1 of Mistaken Identity: The Cold CEO Unravels

The screech of tires and the sickening crunch of metal shattered the midnight silence of the alley.

Elena Coleman froze mid-step, her exhausted mind struggling to process the sounds. She'd just finished an eighteen-hour shift at St. Mary's, her body running on fumes and cheap coffee. The shortcut through this nameless New York alley was a gamble she took every night—and tonight, it seemed, she'd lost.

A burst of orange light flared at the alley's mouth. Then came the roar of engines tearing away, tires squealing as they vanished into the city's maze.

Elena's feet moved before her brain caught up. She rounded the corner and stopped dead.

A black sedan lay overturned, its front crumpled against a fire hydrant. Steam hissed from the ruptured hood. The air reeked of gasoline and burning rubber. And pooling beneath the wreckage, spreading dark and viscous across the wet asphalt, was blood.

A man lay pinned between the car and the alley wall.

She ran.

Kneeling beside him, her trembling fingers found his carotid. Faint. Thready. But there. His suit was torn, soaked in rain and crimson. Even in the dim glow of a flickering streetlamp, she could see the fabric was bespoke, the stitching immaculate. A ring on his finger caught the light—a heavy silver band carved with a wolf's head, its eyes glinting like cold steel.

Then she saw the wound. A knife—no, multiple stab wounds, but the deepest one just below his ribs. Blood pumped steadily, too fast. She pressed her palm against it, and the warmth seeped between her fingers.

"Stay with me," she muttered, more to herself than to him.

Her phone was dead. Of course it was. She'd forgotten to charge it again. An ambulance would take forever to find this godforsaken corner of Brooklyn, and even if it came, he'd bleed out before the paramedics reached him.

She made the choice. The one that would upend everything.

Gritting her teeth, she hooked her arms under his shoulders and dragged. He was heavy—all muscle and bone, a dead weight that screamed of power even in unconsciousness. Her lungs burned. Her back screamed. But she hauled him one block, then up three flights of creaking stairs to her attic apartment—a cramped, leaky box she could barely afford, furnished with a secondhand bed and a couch that had seen better decades.

She laid him on the couch, flipped on the bare bulb overhead, and finally saw his face.

Sharp jaw. High cheekbones. A mouth that in sleep still looked cruel, and a brow that even unconscious seemed carved from granite. He was beautiful in the way a predator was beautiful—the kind of beauty that promised pain if you got too close.

No time for that.

She grabbed her medical kit—pitiful as it was—and cut away his ruined shirt. The wound was worse up close: a deep, ugly gash that would need stitches, and fast. She pulled out antiseptic, a suture kit, and a small bottle of antibiotics. The antibiotics cost more than a week's groceries, but she didn't hesitate. Life over money. Always.

She crushed a pill, mixed it with water, and forced the bitter liquid down his throat. Then she started sewing.

The stitches were perfect—neat, tight, every one placed with the steady hand of someone who'd been trained for years, not the clumsy fumbling of a fresh intern. She worked quickly, efficiently, her mind clear even as her hands trembled from exhaustion.

Then she noticed it. Beneath his skin, the veins were dark—an unnatural, bruise-purple. His forehead burned against her knuckles. This wasn't just infection. This was something else. Toxin.

Her stomach dropped.

The needle must have pierced a nerve, because he groaned. His hand shot up and clamped around her wrist with a grip that made her gasp—iron-strong, burning hot.

His eyes snapped open.

Dark. Unfocused at first, but sharpening with frightening speed. He didn't look like a man waking from unconsciousness. He looked like a caged animal deciding whether to kill or run.

"Water..." he rasped, his voice a gravel scrape.

She tried to pull her wrist free. "Let go. I'll get—"

He yanked. Hard.

She lost her footing and crashed onto his chest, her palms flattening against his bare, blood-smeared skin. His breath was hot against her cheek, smelling of iron and something else—something dark and masculine that clouded her senses.

His arm coiled around her waist, holding her fast. She pushed against his shoulders, but he was impossibly strong for a man who'd just nearly bled out.

"You're safe," she said quickly. "I'm a doctor. I helped you. You need to rest—"

"Who are you?" His voice was a blade, cutting through her panic. His fingers found her jaw, turning her face toward him. "Answer me. Who sent you?"

"No one! I found you in the alley. You were dying. I—"

His gaze raked over her—the dirt on her coat, the blood on her hands, the sheer desperation in her eyes. Something in his expression shifted. Not trust. But calculation.

Then his face contorted with sudden, savage pain. He released her jaw and pressed his palm to his temple, a guttural snarl ripping from his throat.

His eyes found hers again. This time, they were wild—pupils blown wide, barely human. The man who'd been cold and calculating moments ago was gone. In his place was something feral, something desperate.

He stared at her lips. Her blood. Her mouth.

Something flickered in his gaze—not recognition, but hunger. As if her lips were the only thing in the room that could anchor him, could stop the fire burning behind his eyes.

He surged up and crushed his mouth against hers.It wasn't a kiss. It was a bite.

A brutal, punishing claiming that tasted of blood and fever. His teeth scraped her lower lip, drawing a bead of copper-sweet blood. He wasn't kissing her—he was feeding on her, as if her mouth was medicine, as if she was the only thing that could quiet the madness in his skull.

His fingers twisted in her hair, holding her still. The pressure of his lips was bruising, raw, utterly devoid of tenderness.

Her first kiss.

Stolen by a dying stranger whose toxin had turned him into a monster.

Humiliation burned through her like acid. She shoved against his chest, but he wouldn't let go. So she drove her elbow into his wounded side—hard.

He grunted, his grip loosening, his eyes fluttering. The last of his strength gave out. His head fell back, and he collapsed into unconsciousness.

Elena scrambled off the couch and stumbled backward until her spine hit the wall. She slid down, gasping, her hand flying to her mouth. Her lips throbbed, swollen and tender, where he'd bitten down.

She stared at the man on her couch—pale, bleeding, dangerous—and felt a chill crawl down her spine that had nothing to do with the drafty window.

She should have let him die.
