My Alpha Rejected Me and Stole My Birthright
My Alpha Rejected Me and Stole My Birthright Summary
Chapter 1 of My Alpha Rejected Me and Stole My Birthright
The black SUV came up our road at nine in the morning. I smelled it before I saw it. Gasoline, city leather, and a cologne I had tried for eight years to forget.
Landyn Wheeler. Alpha of the Ironvale Pack. My fated mate, once. The man who handed me forged severance papers and sent me to Montana to die quietly.
*They're here,* Soren said through the mind-link. My Beta was posted at the east tower. *Two of them. Him and a blonde.*
*Julianna Fox,* I answered. *His chosen she-wolf.*
*Orders?*
*Let them look.*
I wanted them to look. I wanted them to see everything.
I walked down from the drying sheds slowly. The air smelled of sage, valerian, and wet pine. Our herb fields ran green all the way to the tree line. Behind the stone wall, my warriors stood in two straight lines. Twenty wolves, silent, eyes forward. Former rogues. Rejected she-wolves. Kids nobody wanted. Now they were Moonveil, and they were mine.
The SUV stopped at the gate. Landyn stepped out first.
He looked good. Of course he did. Dark suit, perfect hair, that easy Alpha smile he used on people he planned to own. But his eyes moved too fast. Wall. Towers. Warriors. Fields. Back to the wall.
He had expected a shack. A starving Omega in torn clothes. I could see the plan dying behind his face.
Julianna climbed out next, sunglasses on, heels sinking into the gravel. Then I saw her throat, and my steps nearly stopped.
Moonstone and silver. My mother's Luna necklace.
I kept walking. I did not let my face move.
"Mia." Landyn spread his hands like we were old friends. "Look at you. You've been… busy."
"Landyn." I stopped on my side of the iron bars. "You're on Moonveil land."
"Moonveil." Julianna laughed softly. "That's cute. Did you name it yourself?"
I didn't look at her. I kept my eyes on him.
He cleared his throat. "I'll get to the point. I heard you were struggling out here. No wolf. No real pack. I feel responsible." He gave me the warm voice. The one that used to make me melt. "There's a place for you in my pack house. Housekeeping staff. Omega rank, but you'd be safe. Fed. Protected."
"It's generous," Julianna added. "Most rejects don't get offers."
The word sat in the air. *Reject.*
Eight years ago, it would have broken me. Eight years ago, it did.
I didn't answer. I just lifted my right hand and held it out through the bars.
Landyn frowned. Then he saw the ring. A pale moonstone set in dark silver, glowing faintly in the morning light. His eyes rose, slowly, to my neck. I had tied my hair back on purpose today. I wanted him to see the mark there. A deep, healed bite. Not an Alpha's. Bigger. Older in shape. Lycan.
The color left his face.
The wind turned then. It blew from my side of the gate to his, carrying the scent that lived on my skin now. Cedar smoke and winter steel.
Landyn took one step back. He didn't seem to notice he did it.
"What is that?" Julianna snapped. "Mia, what did you do?"
I lowered my hand. I looked at my warriors and gave one small nod.
The gate swung shut with a heavy iron clang, right in their faces. Neither of them had seen a single one of my people move.
I turned and walked back up the hill. I didn't look back once.
---
Soren followed the SUV in the pickup until they hit the county road. He reported back through the link.
*She's yelling,* he said. *Says the mark is fake. Says no wolf who matters would touch a wolfless reject. Says you probably paid someone.*
*And him?*
A pause. *Nothing. He's just driving. But he keeps fixing his cufflinks. That's three times in twenty minutes.*
I almost smiled. I knew that habit. Landyn did it when the world stopped making sense.
His wolf had smelled something today it had no name for. Something above Alpha. Something above anything he had ever bowed to. And it was going to keep him awake tonight.
Good.
---
That evening I sat on the porch with cold tea in my hands. The sky over the mountains went purple, then dark. My chest felt tight. Not from fear. From the necklace. From watching her wear it like it was hers.
Then the bond warmed inside me, and he was there.
*I saw,* Royal said.
Royal Bennett. Lycan King of the Eastern Dominion. The wolf I dragged out of a snowstorm three years ago. My true mate.
I felt him through the link like heat under my skin. He was angry. Not loud. Royal was never loud. But his anger pressed against me like a hand on a door, waiting to push it open.
*She was wearing your mother's necklace,* he said.
*I know.*
*I can be in New York by morning, Mia.*
I closed my eyes. Part of me wanted to say yes. To let him go. To let him tear the whole thing down for me.
But it was my name they stole. My mother's house. My wolf they silenced.
*Hold,* I told him. *Please. Let me end this myself.*
He was quiet for a long time. I felt how much it cost him. I felt him swallow it down, piece by piece, for me.
*I'll be exactly where you need me,* he said.
That was all. That was always enough.
I closed the link and opened my laptop. My hands were steady now.
One seat. Private charter. Montana to New York.
I booked the flight.
