Chapter 3
Savannah felt as if a lightning bolt had struck her. She froze in place while her mind went blank. She realized, with horror, that after marrying her, Wyatt had rushed to have their first child, Chase.
Though she hadn't planned on having a second child and had no desire to remain a housewife, Wyatt had pushed for it—just when she had secured a role in a big production movie.
At that time, she had fallen for his sweet words and agreed to have another child, unknowingly sacrificing her career once more.
So, this had been part of their carefully crafted plot. They had planned to sever any chance she had at developing her career in the entertainment industry.
Wyatt leaned down and reminded Chase, "You can't tell anyone you saw Brielle today. This is our secret."
Chase responded without skipping a beat, "I know, Daddy. Just like last time."
Their practiced exchange made it clear that this wasn't the first time.
Ignoring the pangs of pain in her abdomen, Savannah rushed back home. She found a few strands of Chase's hair in the bathroom and grabbed her toothbrush.
A family friend owned the private hospital for her routine checkups, so she had no choice but to head to another hospital to get a paternity test.
After a tense half-day, the results came back, and they confirmed Chase was not her child.
It was heartbreaking.
Savannah contacted the hospital she had visited earlier and asked, "Hello, is there any chance I could move up my procedure? I've made up my mind."
The staff replied, "Of course. I'll arrange it for you. Your surgery can be scheduled for next Monday."
When Savannah finally returned home, exhausted, she found Wyatt standing at the door with Chase's hand in his. The scene should have been heartwarming, yet to her, it was an eyesore.
Chase ran into her arms. "Mommy, I missed you so much."
Savannah squeezed out a smile and pulled him away. She stared at his face, which bore a striking resemblance to Brielle's, and asked, "Did you have fun at daycare today?"
Chase subconsciously glanced at Wyatt, who gave him a subtle nod as an indication.
With a practiced calm, Chase recited his side of the story in his usual innocent tone, "Yes, Mommy. We played lots of games and even did some drawing with the other kids."
Savannah's heart shattered as she looked at the child she had raised for five years lying to her face. He was deceiving her alongside Brielle. She felt as if she had raised a traitor.
Wyatt stepped forward and said pretentiously, "It's my fault. I should've gone with you to the checkup yesterday. If you're upset, let out your emotions so our baby can grow healthy."
As he spoke, he gently patted Savannah's shoulder. His face was full of feigned guilt, but his eyes held a cold, almost imperceptible detachment.
"Our baby," Savannah thought bitterly. More like his and Brielle's baby.
Hearing Wyatt's fake concern and seeing the elaborate dinner he had prepared, Savannah felt nauseated. She made an excuse about feeling unwell and retreated to the bedroom to rest.
After that, while Wyatt was in the shower, Savannah snuck into his study. She had never been allowed inside before. But today, she was determined to find out everything.
Chapter 4
Savannah entered Wyatt's study and immediately noticed it was filled with sketches. The subject of each drawing was none other than Brielle at various stages of her life.
Her hands trembled as she picked up one of the drawings. Without thinking, she flipped it over and saw a line of delicate handwriting on the back. It read, "I only wish to grow old with you."
Savannah felt like a heavy hammer had struck her heart at that moment. But before she could process the sorrow, she heard a faint sound coming from the stairs.
Her heart leaped in her chest, and she hurriedly left the room.
She had to lay low for now. If Wyatt wanted to play his little game, then she would play along.
Back in the guest bedroom, Savannah saw the familiar glass of milk placed on the bedside table, just like it had been every night for the past few years. Each time after drinking it, she would sleep soundly without the usual nightmares.
This time, however, she dumped the milk under the bed and took just a tiny sip to make it look like she had drunk it all.
Then, she started going through the jewelry and designer bags Wyatt had bought her over the years, silently calculating if the items' worth could give her the money she needed to leave the country.
The door opened, and Wyatt walked in, completely unaware of her actions.
"What are you doing with all this stuff?"
Savannah steadied herself and came up with an excuse. "Oh, nothing. You've given me so many gifts over the years, I've just run out of space in the closet."
Wyatt didn't seem suspicious. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a delicate pink diamond brooch.
"This is nothing compared to what I plan to give you for the rest of our lives. I remember you love diamonds, so I had this pink diamond brooch specially brought back from overseas. I knew you'd love it."
He smiled warmly as he wiped the speck of milk from her lip, then placed a gentle kiss on the corner of her mouth. As if coaxing a child, he continued, "Sav, you're amazing. Now, go to sleep."
Savannah lay back on the bed. After Wyatt made sure that she was asleep, he carefully lit an aromatherapy diffuser before quietly leaving the room.
The moment Wyatt left, Savannah suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of fatigue. Just as she was about to lose consciousness, she pinched her thigh hard and forced herself to stay awake.
Something about the scent from the diffuser drained all the strength from her body. She stumbled into the bathroom and submerged herself in a cold bath to snap out of the fog.
After regaining her senses, Savannah immediately turned off the diffuser. It took her a long while before she finally felt like herself again.
Camden's voice came from outside the room.
"Uncle Wyatt, are you sure everything's set? She won't wake up halfway through, right?"
Chapter 5
Wyatt answered confidently, "Don't worry, this has been going on for years, and she hasn't noticed. Let's hurry up and go celebrate Brielle's birthday."
"Uncle Wyatt, I overreacted that day at the hospital. Anyway, Savannah can still get pregnant. Next time, we should use my sperm for the IVF. You can't stop me."
Wyatt nodded expressionlessly. It was as though they were simply negotiating a business deal.
Savannah clutched a hand over her mouth, barely suppressing a scream. She couldn't believe the two of them had been scheming about her body all along.
She curled up on the bed corner and bit her lip hard to hold back the tears. It was only after Wyatt and Camden left that her stifled sobs broke free. Tears poured from her red-rimmed eyes and streamed down her face.
The room and the outside were two different worlds. Beyond the walls, the crackling fireworks filled the night sky, drowning out Savannah's muffled cries in the room.
Meanwhile, Brielle posted a video on her social media.
For two full hours, dazzling, multicolored fireworks lit up the sky in a grand display to celebrate her birthday. People in the video congratulated her.
The most prominent gifts came from Camden and Wyatt.
Camden had gifted Brielle a lavish apartment in the heart of the city, while Wyatt had given her half of the shares from Greene Corporation, his family's business.
Even Chase handed Brielle a drawing he had made. "Happy birthday, Mommy."
Brielle embraced him lovingly. "Thank you, my baby. You truly are my son."
Savannah came out of the room in time to witness the scene unfold. Her tears came without warning, cascading down her pale face and soaking into her clothes.
The joy and celebration around her had nothing to do with her. It was as if thousands of needles had pierced her heart, leaving her breathless from the pain.
She didn't notice Brielle approaching until the latter mocked, "You're awake. Well, it's better this way."
