Chapter 1 of Leaving Love for New Beginnings

I smoothed down the front of my dress, a simple black number I'd chosen specifically because William once said it brought out the gold flecks in my eyes. Eight years together, and tomorrow we'd finally be getting our marriage license. The thought should have filled me with butterflies, but instead, a strange heaviness had settled in my chest since we'd arrived at the karaoke bar.

Our research lab colleagues crowded around tables littered with half-empty glasses and appetizer plates. The celebration was ostensibly for our upcoming marriage, but the atmosphere felt oddly tense to me, though no one else seemed to notice.

"Next up, William Peterson!" The karaoke host's voice boomed through the speakers.

William squeezed my hand before standing. "This one's special," he whispered, but something in his eyes didn't quite meet mine.

As the opening notes of "Runaway" filled the room, I took a sip of my cocktail, watching my soon-to-be husband grip the microphone. His voice was surprisingly good—one of the many things I'd fallen in love with back in college.

"I'm ready to run, ready to fall, ready to find something new..."

The lyrics hung in the air, and something made me shift my attention from William to follow his gaze. It landed on Vivienne Chavez, the graduate student who'd joined our lab three months ago. She sat with her chin propped on her hand, smiling up at William with undisguised admiration.

But it was William's expression that made my stomach drop. His eyes held an intensity when they locked with Vivienne's—a spark, a connection—that I hadn't seen directed at me in... I couldn't remember how long.

"...leave it all behind, with you by my side..."

The irony of the lyrics wasn't lost on me as William's gaze drifted between Vivienne and the ceiling, barely acknowledging me in the front row. The gold engagement ring suddenly felt cold and heavy on my finger.

After his performance, amid cheers and whistles, William returned not to the empty seat beside me but to help set up a dice game at the table where Vivienne sat.

"Mind if I join?" I asked, approaching the table where William was explaining the rules to Vivienne, his head bent close to hers.

"Of course!" Vivienne smiled genuinely. "Your fiancé is quite the singer."

William barely looked up. "Grab a seat, Aria. I was just explaining how to play to Vivienne."

I sat beside him, our shoulders touching, but he might as well have been miles away. Throughout the game, I watched as William leaned forward every time Vivienne spoke, laughing too enthusiastically at her jokes about molecular structures that weren't particularly funny. He made sure her glass was never empty, while mine sat untouched at my elbow.

"I'm going to get another drink," I announced after losing my third round. No one seemed to notice.

When I stood too quickly, my heel caught on the chair leg. I stumbled, twisting my ankle, and grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself.

"You okay?" someone from across the table asked.

"Fine," I said, wincing slightly as I tested my weight on it. "Just twisted my ankle a bit."

William, seated right beside me, didn't even turn his head. He was too engrossed in Vivienne's story about her research grant application, nodding enthusiastically as if it were the most fascinating thing he'd ever heard.

Eight years together, and he couldn't feel me falter beside him.

Later that night, in the silence of our apartment, I watched William move through his bedtime routine with mechanical precision. The bathroom light cast harsh shadows across his face as he brushed his teeth, and I wondered if the man I thought I knew was disappearing before my eyes.

"William," I said finally, sitting cross-legged on our bed. "Can we talk about tonight?"

He spat into the sink. "What about it?"

"You and Vivienne seemed... close."

His shoulders stiffened. "She's new to the lab. I'm being friendly."

"The way you looked at her during your song—"

"Jesus, Aria." He cut me off, turning to face me with irritation flashing in his eyes. "Are you seriously getting jealous the night before we get our marriage license? She's a colleague. A student, for god's sake."

"I'm not jealous, I'm concerned," I said quietly. "You barely acknowledged me all night."

"You're being paranoid." He turned off the bathroom light and slipped into bed beside me, immediately rolling to face away. "I'm tired. We have a big day tomorrow."

I lay back against my pillow, staring at the ceiling as William's breathing quickly evened out in sleep. The engagement ring on my finger caught the dim light from the window, throwing tiny rainbows onto the wall.

Eight years together, and tomorrow was supposed to be the beginning of forever. But as I lay there, more alone than I'd felt in all our years together, I couldn't shake the feeling that forever was already slipping through my fingers.
