Chapter 3

I didn't care what Charlie and May thought of me, and all I wanted was for Patricia to live.

"Your mother is in the ICU at the hospital. If you don't believe me, you can call Lillian!"

Lillian was my best friend. She was an attending doctor at one of the top three hospitals in the city, and Charlie grew up with her.

"What gives you the right to give May the money I saved for eight years for the surgery to buy the football lottery? You were stealing!"

I couldn't control my emotions and snarled as I cried in the restaurant.

Everyone looked at me in unison. They looked at my hysteria as if I was crazy.

May suddenly burst into tears, rubbing her fingers in her hands like a little girl.

"Charlie, how about we don't buy the football lottery anymore? I'll give you your money back. Tiffany is so aggressive, and I'm scared.

"She's now cursing Patricia for being critically ill. If she doesn't get the money, I'm afraid she'll go back and do something to hurt Patricia."

Saying that, May hesitated for a moment and looked at me again. "God is watching your every move. Since you talked so harshly, wouldn't you be afraid that Patricia might have any accident in real?"

Sure enough, upon hearing her words, Charlie completely looked quite indifferent.

He turned around, no longer looking at me, and his tone was cold.

"Tiffany, I didn't realize you were such a vicious woman!

"May just got divorced and didn't have a house. What's wrong with me buying the football lottery for her to win some money? Isn't she poor enough? Why don't you even have any sympathy?

"If I had known you were such a heartless woman, I would never have married you in the first place!"

Charlie was just as easily suspicious as before and gave up on me just because May said so.

"You can call and ask Lillian. She's right there in the ICU taking care of your mom!"

I held back my anger and tried to say in a calm voice, "Charlie, you can accompany May anytime you want, I don't even mind if you sleep together, and all I want is the money.

"If you return the five hundred thousand dollars to me right now, I will immediately disappear in front of your sight without getting in the way of you being together."

The monitor and classmates in the scene also came out to explain the situation and persuaded Charlie to go to the hospital with me to have a look first.

Charlie looked a bit doubtful as May whispered with grievance, "The odds on this one are 4.9. If we win, the money will be enough for me to buy a small house to settle down.

"It's alright, Charlie. You can take the money away and I'll live under the bridge. I won't die."

Seeing that she was on the verge of crying, Charlie felt so worried that he immediately put his arms around her and comforted her, "No, I will let you earn the money to buy a house."

After saying that, Charlie was about to pick up his cell phone with the intention of placing a bet.

I was so desperate that I was about to get crazy, and I lunged over to try to stop Charlie by grabbing the phone.

That was half a million dollars.

It took me eight years of shoe stringing to save half a million dollars.

"Charlie! Don't buy it! If we lose it all, we'll have nothing."

He looked annoyed and pushed me straight away. "Are we going to lose? I've been watching soccer for years, and I'm sure of it! Stay out of it if you don't know!"

Chapter 4

"Charlie, please..."

I was always assertive and never asked for help from anyone.

At that moment, I stood directly in front of Charlie in full view of everyone.

"At that moment, I stood directly in front of Charlie in full view of everyone.

"This donor kidney is the only one in the hospital, and Lillian can't delay it for long. If you don't go to the hospital with me now to pay and miss this kidney, your mom won't stand a chance..."

It was the peak dining time, a dozen tables of customers in the store looked at me coincidentally, and some even took out their cell phones to secretly take pictures.

Charlie's face flushed, and he came over to drag me in anger.

“Are you insane? You have to embarrass yourself, don't you?”

May pretended to be generous and was going to leave.

"Tiffany, don't you just not want Charlie to help me? Why can't you talk properly? Do you have to make Charlie embarrassed in front of so many people?"

She forced a smile, her tone aggrieved and pathetic.

"Charlie, forget it. I don't want to embarrass you.

"It's just a shame about this opportunity. You're such a good judge of the game, and you can certainly make a lot of money."

May pretended to be understanding, and she flattered Charlie, satisfying his pathetic self-esteem.

Sure enough, Charlie immediately hugged May tightly and only gave me an indifferent back.

"Tiffany, stop being so pretentious. Aren't you deliberately embarrassing me in front of so many classmates?

"How could I marry such an evil woman as you?"

With that, Charlie left the hotel with May in his arms.

As I cried and shouted at the top of my lungs, Charlie didn't look back at me.

It was when Lillian called me on the phone.

"Tiffany, please come back and see Patricia one last time..."

I turned around in panic and rushed like crazy to the hospital.

When I got to the hospital, Patricia had closed her eyes forever.

Lillian handed me a copy of Patricia's will. "Patricia finally asked me to get a notary and leave you the old house that's going to be demolished.

"She said Charlie was unreliable, and she was afraid that you would suffer in the future."

When I saw the scrawled signature on the will, I couldn't suppress my grief any longer and sat down in front of the hospital bed to cry.

I thought Patricia was saving herself by keeping the house, but it turned out she had left me a fortune.

I cried until I was almost dehydrated, until my eyes dried up like a dry well before I braced myself to take care of Patricia's funeral.

Charlie's phone remained turned off, and my WhatsApp kept alerting me of new messages as I contacted the funeral home alone.

May was celebrating with joy in our classmate chat group that she had won some money.

"Thanks to Charlie, who helped me fund the football lottery, and I won some money to buy an apartment. I'm in a good mood today, so I wish everyone good luck."

My classmates blessed May, complimenting her on how brilliant she was and Charlie's accurate prediction.

I clutched my phone, shaking with anger, and forced myself to type in the chat group.

Tiffany: [Today is the anniversary of Patricia's death. May, can you fall asleep in the new house that Patricia paid for with her life?]

May sent an aggrieved emoji. May: [Tiffany, it's okay that you hate me, but why did you curse Patricia to death?]

The next second, it showed that I had been kicked out of the chat group by Charlie, the group leader.

I felt desperate.

So why did Patricia, who was kind and compassionate, give birth to such a cold-blooded, selfish and stupid child as Charlie?

I sent Charlie the cremation time, but he didn't come to see Patricia one last time.

He bought a large bouquet of flowers to celebrate May's housewarming on Instagram.

The only thing on Patricia's body was a small white flower that I had brought for her.

As I came out of the crematorium, I carried Patricia's urn home just in time to run into Charlie, who was drunk.

"Do you know how much money I won? Over two million dollars!"

Charlie looked smug, as if he was bragging to me. "How many years do you have to work to make two million dollars? I just got that much money by lying down on my back!"

He stared at me contemptuously. "Don't look so serious. Now that I have money, I can send my mom to the best hospital in the capital for a kidney transplant in a few days.

"Give me the rest of the money at home. There's still ten days before the Hampton Cup race, and I'm going to win a few houses back."

I sneered, holding the urn up. "No. Patricia doesn't need it anymore, and you can give the money to May."

His face instantly turned somber, staring intently at the small square box in my hand, and suddenly bursting into a rage.

"Tiffany! It was fine for you to be so capricious before, because you were jealous of May, but now you're threatening me with an urn. Is my mom not good enough for you? Do you have a conscience?"
