Chapter 1
My husband, Charlie Lewis, was trying to impress his first love, May Anderson, so he stole the money I had set aside for his mother, Patricia, to buy a football lottery ticket for the Hampton Cup.
As Patricia was critically ill, May celebrated her winning a house in a classmate's chat group and thanked Charlie for helping her with the capital.
Patricia passed away after failing to be resuscitated due to the loss of her donor kidney.
When Patricia was cremated, Charlie and May celebrated the housewarming.
After realizing the truth, Charlie stood in front of my house for three days and nights and cried for my forgiveness.
——
"Tiffany, Patricia's condition has suddenly worsened, so she must have a kidney transplant immediately. The cost is about half a million dollars, so you should make the payment quickly."
As Patricia's doctor, my best friend, Lillian Hill, anxiously urged me after she came out of the ICU, "Patricia is having a hard time getting a donor kidney, and there are a lot of patients in the hospital looking forward to getting it. I can help you stall for time, so you must hurry."
My eyes filled with tears as I nodded tremblingly.
The money I had saved for eight years on a shoestring was for Patricia's kidney, but it was taken by Charlie secretly this morning.
Patricia was waiting to be saved, and all I could do was call Charlie over and over again, but there was never an answer.
By the time I called for the tenth time, Charlie had blacklisted me.
I was anxious like crazy. I grabbed the hospital's landline and dialed Charlie's number once again, trying to rush to Charlie down the phone line.
Finally, with my stubborn persistence, the call was answered.
"Charlie..."
I had just uttered Charlie's name when May's voice came on the other side of the phone.
"Charlie is watching soccer with us. Is something wrong?"
I lost my mind instantly, crying and growling, "Is his mom's life more important or watching soccer? Put Charlie on the phone! Immediately, right now!"
After a few seconds of silence, Charlie finally answered the phone.
His voice was indifferent and sounded quite impatient. "Tiffany, can you do your own thing besides staring at me like crazy every day?"
I suppressed my grief as I cried and pleaded, "Your mother's condition has worsened, and she has to get a new kidney right away, so you should hurry up and send the money to the hospital!"
Charlie snorted, "You even cursed my mother to get me to come home. It makes me disgusted that you're so vicious."
Saying that, Charlie hung up the phone straight away.
I was distraught. When I called Charlie again, he had turned off his cell phone.
Chapter 2
Looking at Patricia dying in the ICU, I forced myself to calm down.
Patricia had always treated me extremely well, making up for the loss of my mother as a child.
I couldn't watch her die ruthlessly.
Charlie, May and I went to college together, and we had a common chat group.
The monitor had sent me the location yesterday, and he said that everyone was going to watch the Hampton Cup together at a high-end barbecue restaurant today.
Charlie and May would definitely be there.
I quickly rushed over, and sure enough, they were enjoying a drink at the barbecue restaurant.
Charlie had his arm around May and was generously calling the waiter for an additional order.
My plain dress didn't fit in with the place, and the expensive roasted steaks, lobster, and abalone on the table were the delicious food I had never tasted before.
I didn't care about this as I ran over to Charlie.
Seeing that I had shown up, the pleasure and gentleness in Charlie's eyes instantly disappeared, leaving only a boredom that he couldn't hide.
"Tiffany, are you following me?"
He stared at me indifferently, as if he wanted to freeze me with his gaze, and I was the most insensitive person in the world.
I ignored this and anxiously tugged at him.
"There's only one donor kidney in the hospital, so come back to the hospital with me and pay for it. Your mother's illness cannot be delayed any longer!"
Before I could finish speaking, Charlie shrugged off my hand in disgust. Seeing me fall to the ground, Charlie was impassive.
"My mom even gave me a video call this morning. Can you think about it before you lie? You should make up a perfect lie."
Charlie wouldn't believe me at all.
May frowned as she glanced me up and down, "Tiffany, I know you don't like me, but you don't have to dress so plainly on purpose and curse Charlie's mother in front of so many classmates, do you?"
"Charlie's a man. Don't you know how important a man's dignity is? Or do you just want to make Charlie embarrassed?"
As expected, the moment she spoke, Charlie became even more disgusted with me.
He put his arm around May and told me indifferently, "We're just going to watch football, and you have the nerve to curse my mom to death, so do you have any sympathy left?"
Chapter 3
I didn't care what Charlie and May thought of me, and all I wanted was for Patricia to live.
"Your mother is in the ICU at the hospital. If you don't believe me, you can call Lillian!"
Lillian was my best friend. She was an attending doctor at one of the top three hospitals in the city, and Charlie grew up with her.
"What gives you the right to give May the money I saved for eight years for the surgery to buy the football lottery? You were stealing!"
I couldn't control my emotions and snarled as I cried in the restaurant.
Everyone looked at me in unison. They looked at my hysteria as if I was crazy.
May suddenly burst into tears, rubbing her fingers in her hands like a little girl.
"Charlie, how about we don't buy the football lottery anymore? I'll give you your money back. Tiffany is so aggressive, and I'm scared.
"She's now cursing Patricia for being critically ill. If she doesn't get the money, I'm afraid she'll go back and do something to hurt Patricia."
Saying that, May hesitated for a moment and looked at me again. "God is watching your every move. Since you talked so harshly, wouldn't you be afraid that Patricia might have any accident in real?"
Sure enough, upon hearing her words, Charlie completely looked quite indifferent.
He turned around, no longer looking at me, and his tone was cold.
"Tiffany, I didn't realize you were such a vicious woman!
"May just got divorced and didn't have a house. What's wrong with me buying the football lottery for her to win some money? Isn't she poor enough? Why don't you even have any sympathy?
"If I had known you were such a heartless woman, I would never have married you in the first place!"
Charlie was just as easily suspicious as before and gave up on me just because May said so.
"You can call and ask Lillian. She's right there in the ICU taking care of your mom!"
I held back my anger and tried to say in a calm voice, "Charlie, you can accompany May anytime you want, I don't even mind if you sleep together, and all I want is the money.
"If you return the five hundred thousand dollars to me right now, I will immediately disappear in front of your sight without getting in the way of you being together."
The monitor and classmates in the scene also came out to explain the situation and persuaded Charlie to go to the hospital with me to have a look first.
Charlie looked a bit doubtful as May whispered with grievance, "The odds on this one are 4.9. If we win, the money will be enough for me to buy a small house to settle down.
"It's alright, Charlie. You can take the money away and I'll live under the bridge. I won't die."
Seeing that she was on the verge of crying, Charlie felt so worried that he immediately put his arms around her and comforted her, "No, I will let you earn the money to buy a house."
After saying that, Charlie was about to pick up his cell phone with the intention of placing a bet.
I was so desperate that I was about to get crazy, and I lunged over to try to stop Charlie by grabbing the phone.
That was half a million dollars.
It took me eight years of shoe stringing to save half a million dollars.
"Charlie! Don't buy it! If we lose it all, we'll have nothing."
He looked annoyed and pushed me straight away. "Are we going to lose? I've been watching soccer for years, and I'm sure of it! Stay out of it if you don't know!"
