Chapter 1 of He Hid Me for Five Years, So I Said Yes to His Rival

CLARA'S POV

For five years, I slept in Noah Sterling's bed at least three nights a week, and nobody in his family had a clue.

To them, I was Clara Whitmore, the Whitmore daughter. The Whitmores and the Sterlings had been doing business together since before I could walk, so I had a standing invitation to every holiday party, every charity gala, every Sunday brunch on the Sterling terrace. Family friend. Practically a cousin.

Noah's mother hugged me hello. His father asked about my father's golf game. And Noah sat across from me at those dinners, nudging my ankle under the table, while everyone passed the salad.

He'd asked me to wait until his father named him heir to Sterling Holdings. The board was watching him, he said. One wrong move, one distraction, and his father would hand everything to his cousin.

So I waited.

Two weeks ago, he'd kissed my shoulder in the dark and said, "After this quarter, no more hiding."

That was why I wore the green dress tonight. The one he liked. I'd honestly thought this dinner might be the end of the waiting.

Instead, I sat at the long table in the Sterlings' dining room, watching the candles burn lower, while Noah's chair stayed empty.

"He's always late when it matters," his mother, Margaret, said to the woman beside her, smiling like it was charming.

I checked my phone under the tablecloth. No message.

Ten minutes after the first course was served, the doors opened.

Noah walked in wearing the navy suit I'd picked out for him last spring. His hand was wrapped around someone else's.

She was tall and blond, in pale silver silk, and she moved through the room like she'd been rehearsing for it. Evelyn Carrington. I knew her face from the business pages. Carrington Shipping. Old money, older than ours.

Pinned just below her collarbone was a sapphire brooch.

I knew that brooch, too. Every Sterling woman who had married into the family had worn it at her engagement dinner. Margaret had shown me the photos once, laughing, back when I was nineteen and she said I had good taste in jewelry.

Something in my chest went very quiet.

Richard Sterling stood at the head of the table and tapped his glass.

"Thank you all for coming," he said. "Tonight, I'm proud to announce that the Sterling and Carrington families have formally agreed to a union. Our companies, and our families, are going to be one."

Applause rolled around the table. Someone laughed with delight. Someone said, "Finally!"

Noah lifted Evelyn's hand, like he was presenting a prize.

"Everyone," he said, "my fiancée, Evelyn."

They were standing less than ten feet from me. Close enough that I could smell her perfume, something soft and expensive.

Then Noah looked at me.

I had imagined this moment a hundred different ways over the years, the moment he finally looked at me in front of his family. I'd imagined guilt. Panic. Even an apology in his eyes.

His eyes were flat and steady.

It wasn't surprise. It was a warning.

Not now. Don't you dare.

And just like that, I understood. He hadn't been ambushed. His father hadn't sprung this on him over cocktails. The brooch had been fitted, the announcement planned, the guest list sent out. He'd known for weeks. Maybe months.

He'd whispered *no more hiding* while he was already engaged to someone else.

He just never told me.

I picked up my water glass. My hand didn't shake. I was oddly proud of that.

Noah held my gaze a second longer, then pulled out Evelyn's chair for her. She sat down directly across from me and gave me a polite smile.

"I don't think we've met," she said. "Evelyn."

"Clara Whitmore."

"Oh, the Whitmores." She brightened. "Noah's mentioned you. You're the family friend."

Across the table, Noah reached for the wine.

"That's me," I said.

Dinner went on. Lamb, then some kind of tart with figs. I ate a few bites of each because leaving my plate full would have been noticed. Richard talked about the merger timeline. Evelyn's mother talked about venues in Newport. Noah laughed in all the right places, and once, when Evelyn said something about his terrible taste in music, he squeezed her hand on top of the tablecloth where everyone could see.

Five years, and he'd never once touched me above the table.

During dessert, Margaret leaned toward me, her diamond earrings catching the light.

"Clara, sweetheart, you've known Noah longer than almost anyone." She lowered her voice like we were sharing a secret. "What do you think of her?"

Down the table, Noah's fork stopped moving.

I could have said it right then. I could have told his mother where her son had spent last Tuesday night, and the Thursday before that. I could have described the birthmark low on his hip. I could have watched his whole careful future crack open in the middle of his own dining room.

He was watching me. He knew I could.

I looked at Evelyn, who was laughing at something her father said, completely unaware she'd been handed a man who lied as easily as he breathed.

"She seems lovely," I said.

Margaret patted my hand, pleased. "I thought so, too."

Noah exhaled. I saw his shoulders drop.

That was the part that finally hurt.

When the guests started moving into the living room for coffee, I told Margaret I had an early meeting and kissed her cheek. I didn't look back.

My heels sounded too loud on the marble in the front hall. I had my coat over my arm and the front door halfway open when I heard him behind me.

"Clara. Wait."

I kept walking.

My driver was already idling at the bottom of the steps. I slid into the back seat and pulled the door shut just as Noah came out onto the porch, one hand raised, his face lit gold by the porch lights.

"Go," I told the driver.

The car rolled forward. In the side mirror, Noah stood alone on the steps, his phone already at his ear.

Mine buzzed in my lap a second later. His name lit up the screen.

I declined the call. It rang again. I declined it again, then turned the phone face down on my knee and stared out at the dark hedges sliding past.

Five years. I kept trying to find the moment it had stopped being true, and I couldn't find it, because maybe it never had been.

When the buzzing finally stopped, I turned the phone over and scrolled past his missed calls, past his texts I didn't open, all the way down to a thread I'd ignored for three months.

My mother.

Her last message sat there, as composed as she was.

*The Howards' eldest son is back in the country. If you change your mind, let me know.*

She'd tried four times over the years to introduce me to someone suitable. Four times I'd said no, without explaining why. She'd stopped asking after the last one.

I'd always said no because of Noah.

I looked at the message for a long moment. Then I typed.

*Tell the Howards I'll meet him.*

I hit send before I could think about it.

The car turned onto the highway. Noah's name flashed across the top of the screen again, and I swiped it away.

My mother answered almost immediately, like she'd been holding her phone and waiting three months for this exact moment.

*Tomorrow night. Adrian Howard is free.*

I read the name twice.

Howard Capital. The firm that had spent the last year outbidding Sterling Holdings on every deal that mattered. The one rival Richard Sterling cursed at the dinner table. The one family Noah could not afford to offend right now, not with his father watching and the board deciding his future.

I set the phone down in my lap, screen up, and let it light up with Noah's name one more time.

This time, I didn't bother declining.
