Chapter 2

George and Megan arranged for Jessica to transfer schools and intentionally placed her in my class, expecting me to take care of her.

Before I went to school, all the food that our family used to eat together at the dining table was replaced with Jessica's favorite food.

In my previous life, faced with unappetizing breakfast, I would often just eat a few bites and go hungry for the rest of the day.

Megan angrily scolded me for being ignorant, picky, difficult to please, and not caring about her.

Instead, George praised Jessica with a pleased look on his face, "Look, Jessica is quite sensible. She never fusses over food and eats everything without complaint."

I was so sad that I didn't even realize how come he was so familiar with her taste.

Now, when faced with Megan's reproach, I felt no sadness at all. I calmly and rationally asked, "Mom, do you still remember that I get diarrhea from drinking milk?

"My digestion is not good, and if I eat cold sandwiches, my stomach will ache for a whole day.

"I'm allergic to tomatoes in the salad, so which one do you want me to eat?"

She was speechless after my question. Just as Megan felt guilty, she was interrupted by George's accusation, "You are so pretentious with all these questions. How come Jessica is not allergic?"

Her tense expression immediately relaxed. Then, Megan felt that she wasn't at fault and blamed it on my poor physical condition.

They forgot that in the past they took good care of my diet and daily life because they were worried that I was in poor health.

But as soon as Jessica came, they completely forgot about their love for me.

I didn't want to have a useless argument with them over trivial matters, so I turned around and went out to school.

I heard Jessica's choked voice from behind me. "Dad, I don't know the way. If Mia doesn't wait for me to go out together, how am I supposed to get to school?"

"Don't be afraid, Jessica. Just eat your meal, and I will drive you there soon. It's still in time."

As I arrived at the entrance of the school gate by bus, I saw George carrying Jessica's backpack and leading her to the teacher's office to handle the administrative procedures.

When I met my classmate, Angela Turner, she asked me curiously, "Mia, isn't that your dad? Who is that next to him?"

I sneered and whispered, "But soon, he won't be anymore."

Chapter 3

With her innocent appearance, as soon as Jessica arrived in the classroom, she gained the favor of most of our classmates.

Her innocence made everyone instinctively choose to take care of her.

I paid no attention to that and focused solely on my studies. Only by getting into a prestigious university could I change my destiny.

When the monthly exam results came out, she cried at her desk for the entire afternoon. Many classmates comforted her one after another.

In her previous life, Jessica had no interest in studying, and her grades were terrible. Neither of George and Megan, who were both university professors, could teach her well.

In the evening, when they saw Jessica's swollen red eyes, they felt a deep sense of distress.

"Jessica, is someone in class bullying you?"

Then, her tears fell down, and she was choked with sobs and unable to speak.

George angrily complained to me, "I asked you to take care of Jessica at school, but why is she still being bullied?"

I really wanted to tell him that their beloved daughter was crying because she had scored a single-digit mark in mathematics and felt ashamed.

Fearing that I would expose her shortcomings, Jessica quickly said, "Dad, don't blame Mia. It's my poor grades."

Only then did George and Megan know why Jessica was crying like that. Megan hugged her shoulders and comforted her. "It's okay, Jessica. You can catch up slowly if your grades are not good."

George was irritated by the way I was eating peacefully. "Mia, Jessica is crying like this and you don't care about her. You're only focused on eating, so are you about to starve to death?

"How could I have a daughter as selfish as you? You only care about your own grades and ignore Jessica."

"Mom, dad, I'm going to be a senior in high school soon. I also have to prepare for the exam to the advanced class, so I don't have time to tutor Jessica."

"With your excellent grades, what could be the harm in taking some time each day to tutor Jessica?"

Seeing my firm attitude, George and Megan decided to tutor her themselves. They were both highly educated people, so it was not difficult for them to tutor Jessica in high school knowledge.

A few days later, they looked much more haggard. Jessica was simply not cut out for study.

George and Megan had been good at studying since they were young. Now they were teaching elite graduate students and didn't have to worry about my studies since I was young.

Jessica's learning ability obviously exceeded their expectations. George, who was so angry about tutoring during the past a few days, had high blood pressure and Megan had heartache.

I got up in the middle of the night to drink water and heard them in the room discussing hiring a tutor for Jessica.

I overheard George comforting Megan, saying that Jessica had inherited enough wealth to last her a lifetime, so they could also enjoy a comfortable life without working so hard.

It turned out that they adopted her because her mother left her a large sum of property.

George and Megan had a good income but they ignored my life for a large sum of money. My doubts from the previous life were finally solved, and my heart ached even more when I knew the truth.

Chapter 4

In the past few months, I had been studying very hard, often doing exercises until late at night, and then getting up early the next day to take the bus to school.

George drove to pick up Jessica every day. He was waiting for me to give in, but I would rather sleep an hour less than compromise.

I was very confident about the selection for the advanced class of the senior high school next week. Getting into the advanced class would bring me one step closer to attending a prestigious university.

In my previous life, my SAT score was high, but George and Megan used their connections to get Jessica admitted in my place, and I ended up only getting an Associate's Degree.

After graduation, it was difficult for me to find a job, and life became challenging. They looked down on me and felt embarrassed by my situation.

Jessica took my place in school, but her academic performance was poor, and she almost didn't graduate. She couldn't handle the hardships of working.

George and Megan used all their savings to buy her a house, a car, and start a company.

They always told everyone that she was their most promising daughter.

I might not fight for their favor, but I must protect my own future!

Two days before the selection exam, Jessica found me.

She wanted me to help her cheat, but I refused.

Jessica spent a lot of money on tutoring but her grades were still very poor, and it was impossible for her to get into the advanced class.

After I rejected her, she went on a hunger strike when she got home.

George slapped me in the face without asking why, which obviously scared Megan as well.

She quickly grabbed him and said to me impatiently, "Mia, why are you bullying Jessica?"

Without any investigation, they concluded that I had bullied her.

As I told them that Jessica asked me to help her cheat, they were stunned.

His face turned red, but he couldn't swallow his pride and apologize to me.

Instead, Megan raised her voice. "Jessica is right. She is motivated and you have a high score. Telling her the answer won't hurt you. Wouldn't it be good for you two to go to the advanced class together so that you can take care of each other?"

I couldn't believe that these were words spoken by a professor who has devoted her entire life to teaching.

She actually persuaded me to cheat for Jessica.

I returned to my room and locked the door, listening to Megan knocking on Jessica's door next door, coaxing her to come out and have dinner.

The next day, she was in a good mood, humming a song and walking past me with a smug look.

I ignored her and just thought that she was using self-torture to make George and Megan feel sorry for her, and they wouldn't blame her even if she didn't get into the advanced class.

But I was wrong. In the second half of the exam, Jessica threw a ball of paper at me and I didn't catch it.

She kept winking and coughing at me, and finally caught the attention of the invigilator.

In the office, Jessica cried and told the director, Henry Phillips, that I forced her to pass notes to check the answers, and George and Megan could testify to that.

They hurried over to explain to Henry, saying that Jessica was the most well-behaved girl and must have been threatened by Mia.

The head teacher, Brittany Taylor, knew that I didn't need to cheat given my grades, but was helpless as George, Megan, and Henry reached an agreement behind the scenes.

They insisted that it was because of me that Jessica was delayed in answering the questions, and she could have finished the test and been admitted to the advanced class.

With George and Megan' guarantee, Jessica was not punished and was eventually admitted to the advanced class as an exception. Under the pressure of them, I reviewed my mistakes in tears at the school assembly.

Jessica brought this upon herself, and I had to save my life on my own.
