Chapter 1
My father George Roberts, and my mother Megan Roberts favored their adopted daughter, Jessica Roberts.
In my previous life, I, Mia Roberts, could never understand why they didn't love their own biological daughter.
In this new life, I would not compete for attention with Jessica anymore. I just want to live well.
This time, I didn't want them anymore.
"Mia, come and say hello to Jessica. You must take good care of her from now on."
Seeing that I was stunned, Megan pushed my arm hard.
I just realized that I had been reborn, back to the day when George and Megan brought Jessica back in the second semester of my junior year of high school.
The push from Megan just now made me painful. But, it was nothing compared to the agony of being burned alive in a raging fire in my previous life, with my body completely scorched and consumed by the flames.
Jessica wore a light-colored dress. With pitiful eyes, she stood timidly beside George.
If I hadn't known her in my previous life, I would have really taken it for granted that Jessica was simple and kind-hearted.
George used to say that Jessica was named because she was like the brilliant moon, uniquely pure and bright.
She relied on this harmless appearance to make George and Megan unconditionally favor her.
Jessica was cunning and adept at hiding her true intentions. Otherwise, in the fire of my previous life, why was I the only one left to perish in the flames while my whole family managed to escape?
If I had it to happen again, I wouldn't compete with her and would just want to live my life in peace.
"Dad, doesn't Mia like me?"
George looked at me reproachfully, his tone full of blame. "Mia, why are you so rude?"
I quickly forced a smile and greeted. "Hello, Jessica."
Only then did he take her to visit the room with satisfaction.
Sure enough, after looking around, Jessica liked my room the most.
Then, she looked at me innocently and said, "Mia, I didn't mean to take your room. I just thought that room was suitable for my piano."
What she said made sense, so George and Megan looked at her with admiration. Who wouldn't like a pretty girl who could play the piano?
"Okay, let's change rooms. I'll move to the next room."
Obviously, George and Megan didn't expect that I would agree so readily. After being surprised, they immediately smiled and promised Jessica that they would clean up the room in the next few days and buy her a piano.
I stood by and watched with indifference, as if they were the true family.
Finally, they realized that I was still there and praised me, saying, "Mia is so well-behaved, truly a good daughter to us."
In my last life, I cried and refused to leave my room. Megan was disappointed and shouted at me, "You used to be the most gentle and well-behaved. Why are you so mean now?"
George also scolded me harshly, "Jessica has just come to this family. As an elder sister, can't you be more considerate to her?"
In the following days, they treated me with passive aggression and stopped giving me money for school meals. I went hungry for several days until a teacher noticed, but George and Megan simply claimed that they had forgotten about it.
In the end, they forced me to apologize and give in, and as a result, my room was still taken over by Jessica.
This time, I would not engage in meaningless fighting. I don't want George and Megan anymore, so what's a mere room?
Seeing me willingly give up the room, he casually handed me an invitation to a study tour in Riokiye, which was provided by his workplace.
Chapter 2
George and Megan arranged for Jessica to transfer schools and intentionally placed her in my class, expecting me to take care of her.
Before I went to school, all the food that our family used to eat together at the dining table was replaced with Jessica's favorite food.
In my previous life, faced with unappetizing breakfast, I would often just eat a few bites and go hungry for the rest of the day.
Megan angrily scolded me for being ignorant, picky, difficult to please, and not caring about her.
Instead, George praised Jessica with a pleased look on his face, "Look, Jessica is quite sensible. She never fusses over food and eats everything without complaint."
I was so sad that I didn't even realize how come he was so familiar with her taste.
Now, when faced with Megan's reproach, I felt no sadness at all. I calmly and rationally asked, "Mom, do you still remember that I get diarrhea from drinking milk?
"My digestion is not good, and if I eat cold sandwiches, my stomach will ache for a whole day.
"I'm allergic to tomatoes in the salad, so which one do you want me to eat?"
She was speechless after my question. Just as Megan felt guilty, she was interrupted by George's accusation, "You are so pretentious with all these questions. How come Jessica is not allergic?"
Her tense expression immediately relaxed. Then, Megan felt that she wasn't at fault and blamed it on my poor physical condition.
They forgot that in the past they took good care of my diet and daily life because they were worried that I was in poor health.
But as soon as Jessica came, they completely forgot about their love for me.
I didn't want to have a useless argument with them over trivial matters, so I turned around and went out to school.
I heard Jessica's choked voice from behind me. "Dad, I don't know the way. If Mia doesn't wait for me to go out together, how am I supposed to get to school?"
"Don't be afraid, Jessica. Just eat your meal, and I will drive you there soon. It's still in time."
As I arrived at the entrance of the school gate by bus, I saw George carrying Jessica's backpack and leading her to the teacher's office to handle the administrative procedures.
When I met my classmate, Angela Turner, she asked me curiously, "Mia, isn't that your dad? Who is that next to him?"
I sneered and whispered, "But soon, he won't be anymore."
Chapter 3
With her innocent appearance, as soon as Jessica arrived in the classroom, she gained the favor of most of our classmates.
Her innocence made everyone instinctively choose to take care of her.
I paid no attention to that and focused solely on my studies. Only by getting into a prestigious university could I change my destiny.
When the monthly exam results came out, she cried at her desk for the entire afternoon. Many classmates comforted her one after another.
In her previous life, Jessica had no interest in studying, and her grades were terrible. Neither of George and Megan, who were both university professors, could teach her well.
In the evening, when they saw Jessica's swollen red eyes, they felt a deep sense of distress.
"Jessica, is someone in class bullying you?"
Then, her tears fell down, and she was choked with sobs and unable to speak.
George angrily complained to me, "I asked you to take care of Jessica at school, but why is she still being bullied?"
I really wanted to tell him that their beloved daughter was crying because she had scored a single-digit mark in mathematics and felt ashamed.
Fearing that I would expose her shortcomings, Jessica quickly said, "Dad, don't blame Mia. It's my poor grades."
Only then did George and Megan know why Jessica was crying like that. Megan hugged her shoulders and comforted her. "It's okay, Jessica. You can catch up slowly if your grades are not good."
George was irritated by the way I was eating peacefully. "Mia, Jessica is crying like this and you don't care about her. You're only focused on eating, so are you about to starve to death?
"How could I have a daughter as selfish as you? You only care about your own grades and ignore Jessica."
"Mom, dad, I'm going to be a senior in high school soon. I also have to prepare for the exam to the advanced class, so I don't have time to tutor Jessica."
"With your excellent grades, what could be the harm in taking some time each day to tutor Jessica?"
Seeing my firm attitude, George and Megan decided to tutor her themselves. They were both highly educated people, so it was not difficult for them to tutor Jessica in high school knowledge.
A few days later, they looked much more haggard. Jessica was simply not cut out for study.
George and Megan had been good at studying since they were young. Now they were teaching elite graduate students and didn't have to worry about my studies since I was young.
Jessica's learning ability obviously exceeded their expectations. George, who was so angry about tutoring during the past a few days, had high blood pressure and Megan had heartache.
I got up in the middle of the night to drink water and heard them in the room discussing hiring a tutor for Jessica.
I overheard George comforting Megan, saying that Jessica had inherited enough wealth to last her a lifetime, so they could also enjoy a comfortable life without working so hard.
It turned out that they adopted her because her mother left her a large sum of property.
George and Megan had a good income but they ignored my life for a large sum of money. My doubts from the previous life were finally solved, and my heart ached even more when I knew the truth.
