Chapter 2
I contacted a technician to help me change the light bulb.
It turned out that I didn't need Kayne's help.
As soon as I saw the technician off, I received a call from my mentor.
"Olivia, how do you consider what I told you last time? You've graduated for several years, but I still remember you. I'm old now, and I know maybe you don't want to contact me. But this opportunity is rare, and I want to talk to you again. If you miss such a good opportunity, I will feel sorry for you."
I studied artificial intelligence in college, and my mentors valued me very much.
Following him, I won many awards in his projects, and he always thought that I would work in a related industry after graduation.
But unexpectedly, I didn’t.
Kayne thought it was boring to deal with robots all day, so I gave up what I learned in college for him.
I never did anything that Kayne didn't like, just to make him happy.
However, no matter how much I tried to please him, he was still not satisfied with me.
"Olivia, think about it carefully. Your senior is in charge of this project. I have learned about it. It is a very mature idea, and it will have a very high market share in the future. If you are willing, you will achieve good results in the future."
My mentor continued to persuade me, fearing that I would give up again.
But now I had figured it out.
"Sir, I see. I am willing to give it a try. Thank you very much."
My mentor was very happy and said, "I will give you his contact information. Contact him."
I used to treat Kayne as the most important person in my world, and I lived my life with almost no self.
Fortunately, it was not too late to wake up now.
Now that I had the opportunity, I should find myself again.
I contacted the project leader, and he quickly sent me the project information.
He asked me to read it as quickly as possible.
The project laboratory might be relocated, and he had been looking for a new address.
The old laboratory was still in use, so he asked me to familiarize myself with the experimental equipment when I had free time.
Kayne finally came back.
It was quite late at night, and I was reading the documents, so I didn't notice the sound of the door opening.
"Why didn't you answer the phone? I thought you weren't home." He pushed the door open.
I came back to my senses. "I didn't hear it. Maybe it's muted."
It was my habit. I didn’t like to be interrupted by the ringing of bells when studying.
But after I met Fayne, I changed this habit for him, for fear that he would contact me suddenly.
"Did you mute it the whole night?"
He came over with anger.
Chapter 3
I took out my cell phone from the drawer and saw that he had contacted me in the evening.
I put the phone down. “Sorry, I didn’t hear that.”
Then I continued to look through the documents.
When Kayne came to my side, he finally noticed that my arm was in a cast. "Olivia, what's wrong with your arm? Why didn't you tell me?"
Closing the document, I said, "It was broken in the car accident."
Kayne put away the anger on his face and showed some guilt.
Sitting down next to me, he said in a much softer voice, "Olivia, I didn't see it at the time. There was an airbag in the front seat, and you didn't cry out in pain. I thought you were fine."
I turned my head to look at him. "Really?"
He continued to explain, "The situation was urgent at the time. Freya kept crying out in pain, so I thought she was seriously injured."
Was Freya seriously injured? She just hit her head on the glass and scraped her skin.
Kayne came over and took my hand. "Olivia, you know that girls care most about their faces. Freya won't accept it if she gets disfigured."
I nodded. “I know. I understand.”
He paused for a while.
Then he changed the subject. "It rained heavily and thundered last night. You know, Freya has been afraid of the dark since she was young, so I..."
I didn't want to hear his explanation.
So I interrupted him and said, "Okay, she's injured and she's afraid of the dark. You should spend more time with her."
Kayne suddenly became angry. "Olivia, what do you mean?"
I looked at him quietly.
Letting go of my hand, he stood up and looked down at me. "I've explained everything to you, but why do you still have this attitude? Are you mocking me? Freya was indeed injured in the car accident, and all my friends know she has been afraid of the dark since she was young. Do you still want to make trouble with me?"
I stood up too.
Feeling annoyed, I didn't want to say anything more, so I walked out.
He grabbed me and asked, "What's your attitude? Where are you going?"
I said, "I'm sleepy and want to go to bed."
His arm stiffened, but he didn't let me go.
I pulled my hand back. "Kayne, I said I believe you that there is nothing between you and Freya and that you are just taking care of her out of your responsibility as a friend. What's wrong?"
I said the words he said in the past.
Kayne was stunned.
In anger, he slammed the door and left. "Whatever!"
I said I believed him, but he was still not happy.
No matter what I did, he wouldn't be happy.
I didn't care anymore.
Chapter 4
When I woke up the next day, I heard people talking in the living room.
Their voices were even louder than the birds on the window outside.
"I heard that Olivia's arm was injured, so I came here to visit her.
"It's not heavy. Kayne, you don't need to help me carry it. I can do it myself."
I pushed the door open and saw Freya acting coquettishly with Kayne.
"I sweated a lot while walking here, and the band-aid on my forehead is soaked with sweat. Kayne, can you help me change it?"
Kayne patiently went to find a band-aid, then carefully bent over to help her put it on.
The two of them were very close.
After changing the band-aid, they smiled at each other, and Freya finally saw me.
"Olivia, are you up? I was planning to wake you up.
"I heard that your arm was injured. It must be inconvenient for you to cook, right? I bought a lot of food and came here to make delicious food for you."
Kayne said, "Can you cook? Don't hurt yourself."
He took the initiative to walk towards the kitchen. "I'll help you."
Freya happily followed him into the kitchen. "I'm very good at cooking..."
They kept talking, and I didn't even have time to speak.
In the past, I told Kayne that I wanted to eat the food he cooked because I heard from his friends that he was skilled at cooking.
I bought the ingredients, but when they went rot, he just glanced at them and said, "Don't let me cook. I hate cooking and can't stand the smell of cooking."
Therefore, he just didn’t want to cook for me.
They made great noise in the kitchen, and I couldn't concentrate on my work.
Freya came over and called me to eat.
There were several dishes on the table.
Freya picked up fried fish for me. "Olivia, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were also injured at that time. Please don't be angry with me or Kayne. He was worried about me."
She looked at Kayne with grievance and continued, "I bought the fried fish specially for you. Have a taste of it."
I didn't eat it. "Thank you, but I don't like it."
Kayne was unhappy. "Freya got up early to go to the market and then came to cook for you, but why did you not even thank her?"
He asked me, "Olivia, what's wrong with you?"
Freya said, "Kayne, I'm fine." Her eyes turned. "I know Olivia has always misunderstood me, and I was indeed at fault for the car accident that day. Oliva, I'm sorry..."
She kept on talking with tears.
Kayne looked at her distressedly and wiped her tears. "Stop talking. It's not your fault. You don't need to apologize."
When the car accident happened, Kayne only cared about Freya.
I was screaming desperately, but the ambulance was stuck in the road and couldn't get there in time. If it weren't for the kind-hearted person who stopped his car to help me, I would have bled to death.
I was lucky to survive.
"It's indeed not your fault. I should be responsible for my own life.
"Even if I died in the car accident, I deserved it."
It was my fault because I thought Kayne was someone I could rely on for the rest of my life.
"You guys eat. I'm leaving."
I packed my things and went out to find a quiet place to read the documents.
