Chapter 1 of Blood and Silk The Don's Discarded Bride

My name is Vivienne Marchetti, and I was the wife of Don Dominic Ashford, the most powerful man in the American Cosa Nostra.

He was notorious for his obsession with the empire. The Ashford Syndicate consumed him the way fire consumed paper, completely and without mercy. In the five years I spent as his blood-bound bride, he abandoned me more times than I could count, always for the Family, always for the business, always for something that mattered more than I ever would.

The first time was my birthday. I had spent weeks arranging everything: a private dining room at Cipriani's, the menu curated course by course, the flowers chosen to match the season, the candlelight arranged just so. I checked and rechecked every detail with the kind of desperate precision that only a woman starving for her husband's attention could understand. But a hostile turf war erupted over territory on the West Coast, and Dominic flew out on his private jet without so much as a phone call. I sat alone from afternoon until the windows turned black with night. The candles on the table burned down one by one, each dying flame a small, quiet funeral. My phone never lit up again.

The second time was the ambush.

A car ran me off the road on the expressway. The doctors said my condition was critical, that they needed a family member's authorization to operate. I was fading in and out of consciousness, my fingers slick with blood as I managed to send him a single message. His reply came twenty minutes later, cold and clinical as a coroner's report: "I'm in a sit-down. It's important. Handle it yourself."

The third time was when my father was dying.

Papa had held on for days, his body failing but his will iron, because he refused to leave this world without seeing the man his daughter had been given to. The man the Marchetti family had entrusted their only child to in a blood-bound union sealed before the Commission itself. I called Dominic again and again, each ring drilling into my skull like a nail. But he was at a signing ceremony for a deal worth billions in new territory, and he did not come. I held my father's hand as the warmth drained from it degree by degree, the phone pressed to my ear playing nothing but the flat, indifferent tone of a line that would never be answered. My heart went cold in time with his skin.

Once. Twice. Three times. And then the countless times after.

I finally understood. In Dominic Ashford's world, there was no person, no bond, no oath sacred enough to rival his empire. The Syndicate was his true bride. I was merely a clause in a contract, a Marchetti name on a marriage certificate that had been drafted to consolidate power, not to build a life.

I told myself this was the price of the alliance. He had been honest from the beginning, in his own brutal way. He would never love me. But at least, I had believed, he loved no one else either. His coldness was universal, indiscriminate, a frost that touched everything equally. There was a bleak kind of comfort in that. If I could not have his heart, at least no other woman held it.

But just as I had nearly learned to breathe inside that frozen despair, a rumor detonated through the inner circles of the families like a pipe bomb.

Dominic Ashford, the man who was famously immune to women, who looked at the most beautiful creatures in any room with the same flat disinterest he showed a balance sheet, had taken a mistress. And not just taken her. He kept her like a golden bird in a gilded cage, and he spoiled her beyond all reason, beyond all precedent, beyond anything anyone in the Five Families had ever witnessed from a man of his temperament.

The whispers said he had abandoned a deal worth new territory stretching across three states just to take her skiing in the Alps. Simply walked out of the sit-down, left the Capos staring at each other across the table, and flew her to a private chalet in Chamonix.

The whispers said he had cleared his schedule for an entire week, canceling every meeting, every sit-down, every obligation, because her cat was sick and she wanted him there while she nursed it back to health. A week. Dominic Ashford, who had once closed a deal while being stitched up from a knife wound, who treated time the way a miser treated gold, had given a week of his life to a sick cat.

The whispers also said he let her scribble on contracts worth fortunes, priceless sealed accords bearing the Ashford family crest. And when she pouted that a meeting with one of the dynasty's most senior associates was boring, he had simply ended it. Stood up, excused himself, and walked out with her on his arm, leaving a man who had served the family for thirty years sitting alone in stunned silence.

When I first heard these things, my immediate reaction was disbelief.

Impossible. That was Dominic Ashford they were describing.

The man who treated every minute like a bullet in a limited magazine. The man whose rationality bordered on cruelty, whose self-discipline was so absolute it had become its own kind of violence. That man did not abandon deals for ski trips. That man did not cancel meetings for sick cats. That man did not let anyone, anyone, deface a document bearing his family's crest.

But for reasons I could not name, something dark and terrible moved inside me, and I found myself doing what I had never done in five years of marriage. I called in every favor I had. I spent every dollar of the personal funds I had quietly saved. I hired investigators, reached out to contacts in families that owed the Marchettis old debts, pulled strings I did not even know I had. All of it funneled toward a single, obsessive purpose: finding out who she was.

He had her protected behind walls I could not breach.

The security around this woman was suffocating, layered, professional. It was the kind of protection reserved for a Boss's most valuable asset. I burned through my resources, poured money into the effort like water into sand, and after weeks of exhausting, increasingly desperate searching, all I received was a single photograph. Blurry. Taken from a distance. A side profile so indistinct it was barely more than a silhouette.

But it was enough.

She was young. Delicate. Beautiful in that effortless, maddening way that made you understand why wars were fought. And in the photograph, Dominic had his arm around her, his body curved toward hers in a gesture of instinctive, unconscious protectiveness. He was shielding her. Cradling her against him as though she were something precious and breakable.

That posture. That tenderness.

In five years of marriage, I had never once received it. Not a fraction. Not a shadow. Not even the memory of something that might have resembled it.

It was the afternoon I received that photograph that everything changed.

I left the compound in a state I could barely describe. My thoughts were fractured, my chest tight with a pain that had nothing to do with my body. I was not thinking clearly. I should have been. In this world, you always had to think clearly. Distraction was a luxury that got people killed.

I had barely stepped onto the curb outside when I heard it: the roar of an engine, too close, too fast, too deliberate. A black Rolls-Royce surged out of the traffic like a predator breaking from cover, aimed directly at me. There was no screech of brakes. No swerve. No hesitation.

I did not even have time to see the face behind the tinted glass.

The impact hit me like a freight train. My body left the ground, and for one suspended, almost peaceful moment, I felt nothing at all. Then I struck the pavement, and the pain arrived all at once, a white-hot detonation that consumed every nerve, every thought, every fragment of who I was. The world tilted. Went gray. Went dark.

The last thing I registered before consciousness abandoned me was the smell of asphalt and blood, and the distant, fading sound of an engine pulling away.

When I woke, it was to the sharp, antiseptic bite of disinfectant.

Hospital. The ceiling was white and featureless. Fluorescent light hummed above me with the indifference of a machine that did not care whether I lived or died. My body was a landscape of pain, every breath a negotiation with broken things inside me.

The first face I saw was not my husband's.

It was his chief courier. The man who served as Dominic's personal attendant, his shadow, the one who carried messages that were too important or too dangerous for a phone call. He stood at the foot of my bed in a charcoal suit, his expression as composed and remote as a marble saint in a cathedral. His hands were clasped in front of him. His posture was perfect.

"Mrs. Ashford. You're awake."

His voice was exactly as it always was: measured, cool, stripped of anything resembling human warmth. He could have been announcing the weather.

"The Don asked me to relay a message." A pause. Not for dramatic effect. Simply because he was the kind of man who delivered every word with surgical precision. "You are not to investigate matters that do not concern you. You are not to look into people you have no business looking into."

He let the words settle into the sterile air between us.

Then he added, in the same flat, unhurried tone: "If you do, the next time will not be an accident."

My eyes went wide. The pain in my chest detonated, sharp and blinding, and for a moment I could not breathe at all. The monitors beside me spiked. The fluorescent light above seemed to flicker, or perhaps that was my vision failing, my mind refusing to process what I had just heard.

It was him.

It had actually been him.

Dominic. My husband. The man I had been bound to by blood oath and sacred alliance. The man whose name I carried. The man whose ring I wore.

He had ordered the hit on me.
