Chapter 3

The heavy oak doors of the Miller family’s private club swung open, revealing a room bathed in warm chandelier light and filled with low laughter.

At the center of the long mahogany table, seated directly in the hostess armchair, was Chloe. She was dressed in an ivory designer dress that framed her neck, where a vintage sapphire pendant rested against her skin.

It was my pendant. The one Mark had given me for our fifth anniversary, claiming it was a family heirloom meant only for the woman of the house.

Around her, nearly a dozen Miller relatives leaned in, laughing and fawning over her every word.

"Chloe, your skin is glowing," an aunt cooed, patting Chloe’s wrist. "A boy always makes the mother look radiant. Mark is so lucky to finally have an heir."

"She carries herself like a true lady," another cousin chimed in. "Not like some people who think a marriage license makes them royalty."

I stepped across the threshold, holding Lily’s hand tightly in mine.

Lily’s fever had finally broken earlier that afternoon, but she was still pale and fragile. The white bandages wrapped around her palms stood out starkly against her simple navy dress. She shrank against my leg, burying her face into my coat, terrified of the loud voices and the cold stares that suddenly snapped toward us.

The laughter died in an instant.

"Well, look who finally showed up," Brenda said, setting her wine glass down with an exaggerated sigh. "And she brought the baggage with her."

"I thought she had more pride than that," a younger cousin muttered under her breath, loud enough for the entire room to hear. "Look at her, dragging that orphan back here to get on her knees and beg Mark for forgiveness."

"Without Mark’s money, where else could she go?" another voice snickered. "She knows she’s nothing without the Miller name."

I ignored the whispers and walked forward, keeping my posture straight and Lily close to my side.

Mark sat at the head of the table, an untouched glass of scotch resting near his hand. His tailored suit was sharp, his expression cold and unbothered as his eyes traveled from me down to Lily.

He didn't greet us. Instead, he reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick legal document, and tossed it across the table.

It landed right in front of me with a heavy slap.

Printed across the top in bold, black lettering were the words: *Consent to Adoption Dissolution and Transfer of Temporary Guardianship*.

"I’m only going to say this once, Evelyn," Mark said, leaning back in his leather chair and steepling his fingers. "The life of luxury as Mrs. Miller, or a nameless stray with no father and no bloodline. You only get one."

The room fell completely silent. Every pair of eyes watched me, waiting for the break.

"Sign the paperwork, surrender the kid to the city welfare shelter tonight, and this entire incident is forgotten," Mark continued, his voice flat and authoritative. "Refuse, and you walk out of this family with nothing. Not a single cent, not a single piece of property. You will leave with only the clothes on your back."

Chloe tilted her head, resting a delicate hand on her stomach. She reached for a silver tray, picked up an individually wrapped wet wipe, and held it out toward me with an innocent pout.

"Evelyn, please be sensible," Chloe said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Don't ruin the rest of your life over an adopted outsider. Mark is giving you a second chance. Think about your future. Why throw away everything you’ve worked for over a child that isn't even yours?"

Brenda crossed her arms and scoffed. "She should be kissing your feet for offering that much, Mark. A street rat like that will only bring bad luck to our family."

Beside me, I felt a small, trembling tug at the hem of my coat.

I looked down.

Lily was looking up at me, her big brown eyes swimming with fresh tears. Her small chest rose and fell in shallow, jagged gasps, her bandaged fingers clinging weakly to the fabric of my dress.

"Mommy..." she whispered, her voice cracking with heartbreak. "It’s okay... Lily doesn't have to be your little girl anymore."

My breath locked in my throat.

"Mommy, you stay in the pretty big house with Daddy," Lily sobbed softly, wiping her runny nose with the back of her bruised wrist. "Lily will go back to the home. I can sleep in the small bed again. I won't cry, Mommy... so Daddy won't be mad at you anymore..."

Those words hit me like a sledgehammer to the chest.

A five-year-old child, bleeding and recovering from fever and cold exposure, was trying to sacrifice herself so I wouldn't lose a life of wealth.

The sheer cruelty of the people sitting at this table burned away the last trace of my patience.

I crouched down immediately, gathering Lily into my arms. I wrapped my coat around her shivering frame and held her tight against my chest, feeling the frantic thump of her tiny heart.

"Listen to me, Lily," I whispered into her hair, kissing her damp cheek. "Look at Mommy."

Lily sniffled, blinking through her tears.

"You are my daughter," I said, my voice steady and completely clear. "You will always be my daughter. No one in this world is ever going to take you away from me. Do you hear me?"

Lily nodded slowly, burying her face into my shoulder as she held onto my collar.

I wiped the tears from her cheeks, stood up, and faced the table.

Mark was watching me with an impatient frown. "Have you had enough drama? Sign the paper, Evelyn. My patience has limits."

I reached into my leather shoulder bag.

Instead of a pen, I pulled out a crisp, white folder stamped with official red seals.

Before Mark could react, I stepped up to the head of the table and threw the document directly into his face.

The heavy paper struck his cheek and scattered across his lap and the table, knocking over his glass of scotch. Dark amber liquid spilled across the polished mahogany, soaking the edges of the pages.

Mark jumped up, his face flushing with fury. "What the hell is this?!"

"Read it yourself," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a blade.

Mark looked down, his eyes scanning the bold header: *Notarized Divorce Petition and Proposed Property Division Agreement*.

"No need to choose, Mark," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "Your money makes me sick. Your family makes me sick. Lily is my legal daughter, and you are out."

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Brenda shot to her feet, her mouth hanging open in shock, while Chloe froze, the fake smile vanishing from her face.

"You're divorcing me?" Mark laughed, though the sound was strained, his ego cracking under the weight of the public insult. "You? An orphan with zero savings and no family? You think you can survive out there on your own with a sick kid?"

"I don't need a single cent from you," I said.

I picked up the black fountain pen from the center of the table, uncapped it, and signed my name on the final line of the divorce petition with a single, smooth stroke.

The ink dried instantly on the page.

I dropped the pen onto the wet table with a sharp click.

Without another word, I leaned down, scooped Lily up into my arms, and held her securely against my hip. Her little arms wrapped around my neck, resting her head against my shoulder.

I turned on my heel and walked toward the exit.

"Evelyn!"

Mark’s enraged shout echoed off the high ceiling. He slammed both palms down on the table, knocking his chair backward into the wall.

"Don't you dare walk away from me!" he roared, his voice trembling with humiliated fury. "Once you step out of that door, I will make sure you are destroyed! Not a single law firm, not a single company, and not a single bank in this entire city will touch you! I'll blacklist your name everywhere!"

The relatives watched in stunned silence as Mark’s face contorted into an ugly, desperate mask.

"Three days!" Mark yelled after me, his chest heaving as he pointed a trembling finger at my back. "Within three days, you and that little bastard will be starving on the street, begging on your knees at the Miller gates for a piece of bread! Mark my words!"

I didn't stop. I didn't flinch.

I pushed through the heavy double doors, stepped past the private security guards, and walked straight out into the cool night air.

Behind me, the lights of the Miller estate faded into the dark.
